Burke Leading League In Three Star Selections
Being a league veteran in his final year of junior eligibility, the Ottawa Jr. Senators were counting on forward Jaren Burke for some leadership this season.
And the 20-year-old has not disappointed.
Besides leading the Jr. Senators in scoring, with just a couple of weeks remaining in the regular season schedule, Burke was also leading all CCHL players in another category.
Through the Jr. Senators’ first 54 matches, Burke had been selected as one of the three stars of their games 20 times.
He had been chosen first star on five occasions. Burke had also been named second star three times. And he was picked as third star a dozen times.
League-wide stats on 3 Star leaders are also kept. Individuals receive five points if they are chosen as the first star of a game. Three points are awarded for those who are second start. And a single point is given to those who are the third star.
Though he was leading the league in the number of times he was a star, Burke’s star point total of 46 points wasn’t the highest for 3 Star leaders.
That gets RPI to 15 forwards, probably the end of recruiting for the fall.
I agree. You would prefer to see 16, but you don't want to only bring in 1 forward next offseason. Looks like we already have 6 forwards coming in, not counting Burgess.
All three forwards recruited by Coach Smith have been at least 6' tall.
We most certainly are getting bigger. I know, talent matters, but truthfully at this level other than for a small percentage of players, the talent levels are fairly consistent. I maintain, you cannot teach size and we have been woefully small for long enough. Sure i would love scorers at any height and weight, but for now will settle for some bruisers who want to play RPI hockey.
I wonder if that was the reason that Hayhurst was thinking about leaving. He might have felt that he would not fit in Coach's Smith's plans.
Smith said he wanted to play a speedy, skilled, competitive brand of hockey. Jake has speed and skill to spare. Hope Smith can keep him in Troy. ( side note - had a great conversation with his grandpa in Potsdam. Great people )
Possibly the top two forwards during Smith's time at Canisius were the Conacher brothers. Neither is very big and Cory, who has played over 100 NHL games, was almost exactly the same size as Jake while in Buffalo. I'm sure Coach Smith is smart enough to take advantage of his most talented players and Hayhurst definitely fits in that category.
I guess I was wrong, but Jerry and Burke both have size, and Richards isn't small either.![]()

I don't think you are wrong. Looking at Smith's Canisius rosters he seems to value size more than Seth did. However, he has had talented smaller players so I don't think a player like Jake would need to be concerned about not fitting in. In fact, I hope that doing a better job establishing a presence along the boards and in front of the net will provide fast skill players like Jake with a little more room in the offensive zone.
P.S. If coach wanted to establish the impression that size is going to be our dominant feature, then he kept the wrong assistant.............
