Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II

Your example is being an insufferable troll, which I could be if you'd like me to do so. ;) The example I gave is actually in his name, and I was wondering about ASCII limitations (despite the fact that Ö exists in the ASCII alphabet).

I have not seen any accented characters in the Directory. It is indeed off-topic, but my name was originally spelled with an umlaut. My great-grandfather changed it when he moved to the US in about 1866, but kept the AE spelling when he returned to Germany eight to ten years later.

Fair enough. My family also underwent a name change, although it was during WWI when it was "unpopular" to have anything to do with Germany in this country (ancestors had immigrated either late 19th or very early 20th century) so it was more than a spelling change. Some reverted to the old name, while others changed it for good.

The years the men's recruits are listed as committed for are not necessarily accurate.
The dates on which some of the women are listed as committing on may be considerably after the actual dates.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II

Furthering the ASCII character thing; I believe that CollegeHockeyStats.net updated Laliberté and Bubela's names to use the accented version last fall (around early November). Prior to that, they used undecorated versions. USCHO worked around the issue with a player named "Milo." with a period in place of the accented "s". Sometime during the process, USCHO created a second player entity for Bubela, resulting in a split stat line and the 14-15 stat page showing two Bubelas.

It caused some issues for RPI TV when the stats stopped updating automatically for just those two!

CHS actually uses the wrong character for Bubela, they use "Single Character Introducer" instead of the proper "Latin Small Letter S with Caron".

Checking through my stack of linesheets, neither Laliberte or Bubela have had their proper accents in print.

I noticed that USCHO showed us having two Bubelas but forgot.

There are still plenty of databases that have issues with handling Unicode characters. Although Western European alphabets are included within ASCII's 256 characters, you have to hop to Unicode once other alphabets are introduced. I'm sure some have tried to do ASCII conversions similar to what you described in your last sentence in order to not have to convert to Unicode, but you must be using the proper encoding, hence why most have just given up on those and just gone to Unicode.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II

It looks like SA didn't have a Plan B. http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2015/may/30/rpidillon530/

“I was surprised because he had given us his word for two years,” Appert said Saturday. “That’s the way we recruit. We recruit personally. We have a good relationship. My deal is that we don’t mass recruit. I’ll give you my word that we won’t recruit another goalie. If you give us your word, it’s a done deal and not continue to explore options.

“He, obviously, decided to change his mind on that.”

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II

I mentioned on the Season Thread that maybe SA thinks about Jared Rutledge as a possible replacement for Dillon. 21 yrs old.... could serve as Kazzy’s backup while SA tries to get a future #1 for 2017. Another possibility might be Lincoln Stars goalie Cam Hackett. He de-committed from Cornell last year. Had a good year (not stat-wise) for a bad Lincoln team. Turns 19 on Monday. Trying to watch the Ana/Chi game but keep drifting back to today’s news. BTW, from what I understand, the reason Hackett de-committed was he wanted to go to Cornell last year but Schaeffer wanted him to delay a year.
