Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II

this is not a good sign for the program. And Seth's comments leave me with a dull ring in my ears.

It's certainly not a good thing for the program, but these days it happens everywhere. E.g., Clarkson lost a 2016 recruit to the WHL a few days ago.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II

I mentioned on the Season Thread that maybe SA thinks about Jared Rutledge as a possible replacement for Dillon. 21 yrs old.... could serve as Kazzy’s backup while SA tries to get a future #1 for 2017. Another possibility might be Lincoln Stars goalie Cam Hackett. He de-committed from Cornell last year. Had a good year (not stat-wise) for a bad Lincoln team. Turns 19 on Monday. Trying to watch the Ana/Chi game but keep drifting back to today’s news. BTW, from what I understand, the reason Hackett de-committed was he wanted to go to Cornell last year but Schaeffer wanted him to delay a year.

I had wondered for a long time why no one picked up Rutledge. I had the gut feeling that he is going to go directly to the pros next season. He would be good pickup.

You are correct about Hackett.

What do you expect him to say? It does no good to trash the kid or the poachers in the juniors. He needs to go find a decent goalie pronto. It does no good to waste time and energy on a kid who didn't want to be here. It sucks, but time to move on.

It sounded to me that he was mad at AD as per the quote in post 816.

It is not clear what AD wanted except for making the LA Kings happy. Clearly, he is looking for the best route to the pros. That's what it seemed like a year ago and what it appears like now.

The entire quote passively-aggressively trashed him, and included a dollop of "feel-sorry-for-me" 'If you give us your word, it’s a done deal and not continue to explore options.' Is any of that helpful? At the end of the day, a high profile recruit left the program before even starting. Not a good look for anyone associated with the program. And for him to come out and say he has no Plan B? Really? I'd like to think no D1 coach goes without a "plan B" especially given, as Ralph said, a) it's a position that isn't stocked to be deep, and b) it happens everywhere.

You are 100% correct - time to move on. I hope Seth can do so.

Alec Who? ;)
My sentiment exactly. Unless he becomes an NHL star with in a few years, it is most certainly his loss. The best insurance against being a failure at the NHL level is a solid RPI degree. Not everyone who jumps at the offers from the NHL becomes a star and not everyone earns the big dollars. Unless you come form a wealthy family and either go into the family business or inherit the money, a college degree, and especially an RPI degree, could be the most valuable thing you can obtain.
The list is quite long for those who either chose not to come here or who left very early and never cam back to finish a degree. The list of those who became successful NHL level players is not.

SA also said http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2015/may/30/rpidillon530/

“We’ll be fine,” Appert said. “It’s Alec that I’m worried about. This program’s been around for over 100 years. This program is going to be fine without Alec Dillon. But it’s Alec that you worry about because he’s, in my opinion, he’s giving up a lot as a student-athlete, as a person, as a goalie and his development not only for hockey, but for his life.”
