RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part III)

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part III)

somewhat of a connection with SA also as a member of the 2011 USA Ivan Hlinka Coaching staff led by Seth...........Varady was also on the coaching staff for Team USA at the 2011 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, helping the team win the silver medal. http://www.ushl.com/news.php?action=detail&news_id=1821

Also the video coach for the dude that said they'll be a star. (Dean Blais, 2010 WJC)

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part III)

I am still thinking that when I was watching the 1985 RPI-UMD game, I would never have guessed that Mark Jooris's son would have gone to Union and Skeeter Moore's to RPI. (I wouldn't have even thought that union would have a D-I team.)

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part III)

Makes me wonder if, should Moore do very well for RPI, certain posters will be channeling Don Cherry after Canada lost in the 2010 WJC...
I will have to chew on the meaning of that. of course, Moore is due to graduate in 2018, and who knows if I will still be alive at 70.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part III)

I hope that you are correct. I still am somewhat concerned about his size. Also, just going by his line 9-0-0-0-20, he seems to have had some trouble adapting to the USHL, although he may have not been used in the situations that he was accustomed to. On the other hand Manley seems to have done fairly well in an even shorter stay there.

Edit: Moore was, however, +5 in those nine games.

RB - Your longstanding concern and preferences re: dmen stature are well-documented and so noted. :D I continue to be of the opinion that there is a place for shifty, puck moving dmen in the college game. Watching MSU product Torey Krug (who is now 5'9 180) playing for the B's last night only confirms this for me. Moore is already this size.... Of course, the odds are against guys of this size making the bigs, but having an impactful career as a D1 player is well within the rhelm of possibility.

This statement tells me all I need to know: "...“They love the way I play, and the system they play is right up my alley,” he said. “They are going to have me paired with a bigger defenseman — more of a stay-at-home defenseman — and I will have free reign to rush the puck up into the play and create as many offensive chances as I can.

I'll make it somewhat easier. After the USA won the gold medal in WJC 2010, Don Cherry went on a tirade that it was because of Canada that they were able to win (through playing in Canadian junior leagues) and had absolutely nothing to do with "American development". Basically a "you didn't build that" moment.
OK, that makes some sense. Somehow I think that if I were to post that Union's recent success was even partially due to the training that Josh Jooris got from his father, an RPI grad, it wouldn't fly.

There is certainly a place for shifty, puck moving dmen. The question is how many do we need. You have met me -- I have a distinct preference for short people. :)

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part III)

I should add that I commented about Moore's 9-0-0-0-20 line in the USHL. Fourteen of those minutes were on one play, a double minor and a misconduct with others getting similar penalties.

After re-reading the quote that WS posted, I'm convinced that Moore is going to be a direct reload for when Bo Dolan graduates. Perhaps they will be figuring out how well he fits in with the BRO. ;)

He'll hide behind Curadi and shoot between his legs. ;)

Small sample size, but I have seen DE play at least a dozen times the past two seasons. Although HS play doesn't always transfer to the college game he is very gifted with the puck, and plays very smart positional hockey defensively. Obviously will never be a bruiser, yet his probable lack of NHL potential shouldn't deter him at RPI.

Times certainly do change though. When I was playing a bit as a young man-5'9" and 180 was either a big bruising power forward or a very decent sized defenseman. As most here know-I am one of those who strongly believes you cannot teach size. But at teh college level in particular-talent and speed can make up for much of that and be an even more important asset. As long as the entire defensive corps is not of similar size, we should be able to defend against the bigger forwards of the Division I teams without any problem.

There is certainly a place for shifty, puck moving dmen. The question is how many do we need. You have met me -- I have a distinct preference for short people. :)
look at Ferris State D-core two years ago. I think everyone was under 6'. But they all could skate. System wise, they all played a very tight gap in the nuetral zone, challenging every pass. They were able to do this because there was alway a back checking forward coming back through the middle. They were able to plug up the neutral zone, forcing turn over and then, quickly transitioning to offense of the turnover they forced. Teams would then result to dump and chase, then just lost the race to the loose puck to those speedy, small defensemen, who once again, were transitioning to offense from thier.

Point I'm trying to make, systems are key here, were some will support your team personal strengths.

Also, with the way the college game is now being called, the big/harding hitting defensemen can be a real liability with the head contact, etc point of emphasis, on top of the NZ crackdown on inference.
