Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part II)

Ralph / Turk

He's from down here and I know the guy he trains with. Trust me -- he's a good one and will contend for the #1 job. He's a steal for RPI.

I just wish he'd have considered another Liberty League engineering (are we still an engineering school or are we now an entrepreneur school?) school.

If he is #1 goalie material, shouldn't we be expecting someone to be leaving early? Kasdorf has shown that he can play. and Diebold has not yet had a real chance to show anything.
Either one of them could be looking for a new place to play.
I don't think that the Jets would go after him this year, but if he puts back to back years like this together, I am sure that they are going to want him to move up. There will be money involved.
All just speculation, but crazy things happen all the time.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part II)

I agree, but since there are only 18 full scholarships (which can be divided), he cannot give a full scholarship to every player. He's going to get a better quality recruit with a full scholarship tahn with a small partial. Of course, he can get creative with other types of funding if the player is eligible.
I never stated or implied that he was on a full boat. Could be anything from nothing to 4 years.... Your last sentence says it all. None of us truly have a grasp on what the coaches have to "burn" each year on recruits...given the various funding streams available.

We do need a replacement for Merriam. I was expecting a true walkon, as we have done many times recently, but if SA is going to get a better goalie for little scholarship money -- they not do it. I don't think he expects either Kasdorf or Diebold to leave this summer, but either could.

I didn't mean to imply that you implied it either. ;) Also being a goalie himself with a record here and in Denver of having goalies being drafted and playing pro, this is probably an incentive for goalies also.

Snarl: EJHL. I'll post the box eventually.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part II)

BTW, I just noticed that what the EJHL lists as games for goalies is not "games played in" as is standard operating percedure most places, but rather games dressed, that is it includes the games where all he did was open the door to the bench. I am not going to go through the boxscores (at least at the moment) to change this, and anyway it is what the EJHL does.
He's actually played all or part of 25 of the 35 games for which he was dressed. http://www.easternjunior.com/roster_players/1598633?subseason=80170

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part II)

On Wednesday, the Boston Bandits lost to the Springfield Junior Pics 4-1. Jake Soffer gave up four goals on 29 shots in 60:00. http://www.easternjunior.com/game/game_sheet/3604770

Soffer's line is now 36-9-12-2-2.77-.918. actually 26 games play in

A little scuffle there at 19:22 of the second period. ;) (Ten roughing after the whistle penalties, five to each team. I assume that it was all of the skaters on the ice)

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part II)

With all this talk of players leaving early-it has been explained to me that the NHL teams are usually a bit more patient with goalies than with other position players. They normally feel their games mature later and that their Pro Lifespan is much longer as they can play to a much older age. Besides, they also tend to feel that NCAA hockey is not a bad training ground for them. With forwards and defensemen, the feeling is that their pro life span is shorter and that they need to get them moved up through the ranks a bit quicker. Also since they need to be exposed a bit more to the rougher play of the pros, once their hockey skills are improved enough at the NCAA level, they would like them to be playing in leagues that play more games and a rougher style(including some fisticuffs at times). All that being said-everything goes out the window when a team feels they need help at a postion right away and of course money talks. I could never blame a young man for jumping if the money is enough. No one can guarantee that if he stays another year that he won't sustain some sort of major injury and become a much less valuable property. Just my 2¢ but regurgitating what some people with far more experience than I have said.

I have to disagree with that. i don't think you can call the limited minutes he played as being given a full chance at the position. Also, when he was playing, our team was not exactly putting it all together and much of how well a goalie performs is based on what the team in front of him is doing. The goalie position is so important yet so hard to evaluate. Going way back-I think I could have played goalie for the Montreal Canadiens of the 50's and been an all star. As a kid i just remember their defense was able to shut down everyone and the goalie could probably read a newspaper during some games.;)

Wasn't he #1 to start the season, though? The biggest thing I notice with goaltenders is that sometimes they have difficulty getting into a rhythm immediately. Take Diebold, for example... in the games he has played, how many times has he given up a goal within the first, say, 4 or 5 shots? To get this back onto the topic of recruits, it looks like in the last game, that happened to Soffer (goal in the first minute, then a shorty early in the first). If you really want a testament to Coach Appert's talent at coaching goaltending and helping goalies to get into a rhythm, I'd look no further than Allen York. Sure, we remember his brilliance from 2009-11, but remember how it took him so long to get going in his freshman year, even when given a chance over Lange (like that 7-spot Miami put on him)? We may not see it from Soffer right away when he gets to RPI, but I fully expect his game will rise while there.

He might have been #1 early in the season but this team was giving up odd man rushes and breakaways like hot cakes. We could have had Jacques Plante in net (only kidding!) and still have given up a boatful of goals. I have not closed the book on Diebold and think that if we had to depnd on him right now-it might take a game or two-but he would answer the call quite well. Kasdorf is by far my number 1-but both Merriam and Diebold can play. All they need is to have us play disciplined defensive hockey in front of them.

[Kinkaid? York? Mike lee? Aaron Dell? Talbot? Your right only 5 in 3 years

I agree with that although it indeed depends upon which team drafts them and their view of college hockey as a training gound.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part II)

I agree with that although it indeed depends upon which team drafts them and their view of college hockey as a training gound.

Of course and we agree-but these kids are normally drafted well before college-and the NHL team knows exactly where they are going. If they did not think tht the NCAA was the place to be-I am pretty sure they would direct them elsewhere. There are 59 NCAA DIV I temas and each has perhaps 3 goalies per year-you just see only a small number leave early for the pros from that group. No question some will leave if the situation is right-but if they are not relative sure to move up quickly-it would make very little sense. We have had Puppa and York leave early (albeit not as early as some recent forwards). the money is of course key. But i would imagine a first or second round pick would be offered far more than a 6th round pick and a high profile big market team can afford to offer more than a small town Canadian team.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part II)

Who is too say they would not have left even earlier if they weren't goalies.

Exactly-How many HE players who were forwards and defensemen at BC or BU or Maine or the WCHA schools left after only 1 or 2 years? There are always exceptions-but most feel that goalies can afford to spend the time and not be rushed. It is not like they need to experience the physical play of the pro leagues.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part II)

If you're asking RPI fans and alums whether Clarkson should be considered an engineering school, you may not like the responses you're likely to get.
The more things change (and the older I get) the more things stay the same.

This rivalry should never die.
