RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part II)

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part II)

Someone asked a while back about which dmen are right- and which are left-hand shots. collegehockeyinc's depth chart page has the info if you click on each player. I don't know how trustwothy it is considering how many other apparent errors there are, for example the years for Reno amd Melanson and the spelling of DeVito.

It's better than nothing. Obviously my biggest concern is that we're getting a good mix of dexterity, since there are times when you want a right-handed player, and times when you want a left-handed player. A good example is the butterfly PP setup video that was linked earlier (maybe in another thread). If we can have the butterfly along with some good motion (especially if a defender or two is playing a match-up style to cover a specific person they're expecting to take the shot), we can make sure to be tactically advantageous.

They also list Fornaris as a '15 enrollee (which was also my guess), while Heisenberg has him for '14.

Since he could well be another "weapon," the question is, when does it make sense to start his four years? The 2014-15 team may shape up to be extremely good (this years sophomores will be seniors) - should Fornaris be a potential replacement for, say, Matt Tinordi, or for Ryan Haggerty?

I originally pictured him as a replacement for Rogic. I suspect however that SA doesn't look for replacements per se and rather goes for the best players available in broad categories. He certainly could be a 2015, rather than a 2014, recruit, but given his age, he could be either. Certainly he could benefit from a year in the USHL, as could any recruit.

BTW, Fornaris' game started at 1 PM today.

Edit: A tweeter that hedges his bets on when Fornaris will arrive https://twitter.com/NEHockeyDaily/status/301069084508954625.

Seth has to keep eyes wide open. Kasdorf will leave after junior season if not after soph year I hope not Winnipeg will throw $$$ at him. Also haggerty after his junior year probably.

I agree that those two, and a couple of others, could leave early, and SA has to stockpile talent in case they do. I don't think that Soffer is regarded as a Kasdorf replacement.

I don't think he's a Kasdorf replacement by any means, but the possibility that Kasdorf could leave quite early (the mention from someone the other day that he was getting married this summer made me even more concerned on that front) may explain why we went after a slightly higher quality walk-on. I generally figure we'll get 3 years from a top-notch recruit but we've been burned before. Barring a miracle run to the NCAA final I can't see Kasdorf leaving this year (especially just a year after a disappointing season in juniors), but play of his current quality continuing through next year might make him very attractive to Winnipeg. If so, we could find ourselves needing Soffer to be the primary backup for a year if our next top goalie recruit (whoever he may be) isn't ready.

That does all make sense. I just hope that SA has a good idea of what is likely and what is possible, and we don't get burned as when Pirri and D'Amigo left.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part II)

have to agree that Jake Soffer will fill the role of 3rd goalie. He was however chosen for this years All-Star squad... http://bostonbandits.com/news.php?news_id=692843

He is a distinct improvement over any third goalie we have had since 03-04 when we had Marsters, Kurk, and Martin except for this season.
Ralph / Turk

He's from down here and I know the guy he trains with. Trust me -- he's a good one and will contend for the #1 job. He's a steal for RPI.

I just wish he'd have considered another Liberty League engineering (are we still an engineering school or are we now an entrepreneur school?) school.

If you're asking RPI fans and alums whether Clarkson should be considered an engineering school, you may not like the responses you're likely to get.

I certainly hope that he is as good as you say. I am sure that he will be given a shot, but the #1 gaolie job is Kasdorf's for the foreseeable future.

BTW, I just noticed that what the EJHL lists as games for goalies is not "games played in" as is standard operating percedure most places, but rather games dressed, that is it includes the games where all he did was open the door to the bench. I am not going to go through the boxscores (at least at the moment) to change this, and anyway it is what the EJHL does.

I dont believe for a minute Seth would sign a kid if he didn't think he could compete. That's not the business model that O.G.L. (Our Great Leader) is executing. Sorry Aspy, thought it was time to give it an acronymn...:D:p

I agree, but since there are only 18 full scholarships (which can be divided), he cannot give a full scholarship to every player. He's going to get a better quality recruit with a full scholarship tahn with a small partial. Of course, he can get creative with other types of funding if the player is eligible.

Completely agree re: Kaz. I hope to heck I'm wrong, but I think by now, we should all realize that given today's environment with young draftees, anything is possible.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part II)

It's been a while since we had an EJHL recruit, so I forgot how erratic they are in posting boxscores.

Of course, we lose players who just go to weddings, not necessarily their own. ;)
