Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2011-12 Part II

On Wednesday, the Delbarton School defeated Bishop Eustace 8-0 in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA Tournament (Non-Public Division). Drew Melanson had two assists. http://highschoolsports.nj.com/game/score/1252705/

Melanson's line is now 25-17-40-57-x.

Scored 8 and had 7 saves. They didn't need the goalies. :)

We pretty much figured this one was not worth going to see. Would have been surprised with anything being scored against them. When you look at their line up in the boxscore today remember the following commitments- Baiocco(Yale) Bilby (committed to Div III) Davis(Princeton) Melanson(RPI) Phinney(Princeton)
We have also been impressed by one of their younger players Josh Melnick. A small forward but I would bet he goes Division I. It is very hard to judge the team's level of play though-we have yet to see them against any real competition.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2011-12 Part II

I know that you said that, but I wasn't sure if you posted it or wrote it in an E-mail. That was why I made the comment.

I think I had sent it to you a while ago in a message. He is at least 5'10" for certain and I would guess 165 is more like it.

FWIW, that College Hockey Inc/RinkNet commitment page I found a couple weeks ago has Melanson listed at 5'11"-160lbs. They also have him down as a 2014 recruit which if correct, probably means he will be back at Delbarton for his senior year, then go off to Omaha(USHL) in 2013 and arrive at RPI in the fall of 2014.

They also have Bubela as a 2013 recruit.

Thinks can always change as we know.

Fits pretty well. We have seen Delbarton quite a bit over the past 2 years and Melanson is unquestionably bigger this year. Of course we have not seen him off skates or without a uniform on-but He certainly looks heavier this year-but I must admit he has not lost even 1/2 step in speed. I strongly feel he will stay his senior year in NJ before moving on.
I suspect Bubela could be either a 2012 or 2013 depending on what openings SA feels he needs to fill.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2011-12 Part II

The NYSPHSAA hockey championships are in about 2 weeks in Utica. Does anyone know of any players we might want to look at?
Good thought FD - no doubt college scouts will be on hand. The most immediate RPI example is Mike Zalewski. As a Junior, he was MVP of the state tourney and won the DII cup with New Hartford HS, before moving on to the Syr. Stars for his senior.

As for local H.S. hockey, I've been very impressed with the growth in the number of teams and the quality of play over the last several years. We're certainly no Minnesota, but if the trend continues, there may well come a day when local HS kids start getting looks from D1. We've seen it first hand with the explosion of lacrosse programs locally (boys and girls) who are regularly landing D1 schollies.

Bubela may also depend on SATs, course work, etc.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2011-12 Part II

So, that site (http://collegecommitments.com/) is showing Andrew Hamburg from CC as a transfer to RPI next year. What?

EDIT: Heisenberg is showing an "Andrew Hamburg" from the Omaha Lancers (USHL) committing to RIT, which makes a bit more sense.

EDIT 2: The Lancers player is named "Anthony Hamburg". Seems to be a very awkward game of "Telephone" going on...

The USHL site shows Anthony Hamburg as an RIT commit http://www.ushl.com/news.php?action=detail&news_id=759. Andrew Hamburg is a different person and was still playing for CC last weekend. It would be odd for him to announce a transfer at this time. I suspect that collegecommitments.com is wrong.

Didn't realize that.

Their predecessor, St. John's (which remained an elementary/middle school once Seton was formed in 1990), also competed in the NYSPHSAA. The lower grades would have their own league within the diocese, but since there was pretty much one main high school, they had to compete somewhere.

Andrew Hamburg, from Phoenix, is a junior at CC. Would seem odd to use a redshirt year just to play one year in a different conference, especially considering that he's still playing at CC.

Anthony Hamburg, from Houston (Wild draft pick, and apparently no relation), played seven games at Colgate last year, picking up three assists, then split back for the USHL on the supposed expectation that he would give it another go this year. Ended up staying in the USHL this year, and now apparently off to RIT?

EDIT: Saw the site listed Anthony as being from Phoenix. So maybe they are related after all. Given that the date on the CHI page is the same as that on the USHL page, they got the wrong Hamburg AND the wrong R-starting tech school.
