Re: RPI Offseason Part II: Mindless Drivel.

you have certainly read enough posts to have understood that the "ridiculous" description was about the DATE and STARTING TIME, not the opponent . In fact, i think it's great that BC and RPI are playing again

No, but if that's what you want to roll with, fine.

Re: RPI Offseason Part II: Mindless Drivel.

In honor of Kelly O'Brien, today is 4 September 2013. There are 31 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 5 October 2013 for the start of next season.

Re: RPI Offseason Part II: Mindless Drivel.

Remember that informational post about RPI on reddit I talked about a while back? Well, it's posted in rough draft here. If anyone has any critiques, additions, etc. that they'd like to add, feel free to let me know. (Warning, some profanity)

Re: RPI Offseason Part II: Mindless Drivel.

Have you ever been to Conte Forum and actually talked to anyone there because the people are quite nice and also behaved but isn't arrogant what is said about all fans/students of teams that have won so often by those that have won a lot less if at all (and i don't mean RPI with that statement because I know nothing about RPI fans but do know a little about your history) ? Anywho, the Hockey East schedule says the game is at 7 and I was just going to try to find out if that's correct as you guys say 3 PM or what ever. I tend to agree with the 3PM start. As far as a crowd is concerned if this were the opener on a Friday night it would be close to a sell out but on Sunday afternoon/sunday night i think the 5000K estimate is in the ball park but because it's the home opener maybe more, these are uncharted waters , opening up the season on a frigging Sunday

P.S. Conte Forum holds 7884, not over 8K
I've been to Conte although not for a long time. My reference to the fans is based on attending multiple BC games at Merrimack and just the average BC alum that I've known. I can trace this back to the first person from BC I ever met while still in college (in 1986) and many more since. Of all of the alums that I've met, I can think of only a couple that weren't somewhat off putting in their ability to genuflect about themselves and BC. Note that this does not include the actual hockey players themselves. Now just maybe I've had bad luck along the way but I've had enough fans at the away games reinforce that initial impression that was established almost 30 years ago that I find myself always rooting against BC (with the exception of when Kreider was on the team since he is from the town that I live in now - I tried to stay neutral then while rooting for him to do well).

All of that said, I hope you are right and I am wrong. I look forward to attending the game and not feeling off-put by someone acting like an entitled little boob.

I have some pictures of the Pep Band from a Q'Pac game in Hamden in 2010 or 2011 that I can send you if I knew how to get them to you, if you want them.....the band is wearing the vertical stripe red white blue rugby shirts in those.

Fixed your post. ;)

We have had other mascots between that horse and Puckman. The two that come immediately to mind are the Swarm (a bee) and the Red Hawk (called in derogatory fashion the RPI Chicken).

I assume that you know that the current version of the RPI Fight Song is the PC (non-sexist) version. I still say "true sons of Rensselaer" etc. http://www.augenblick.org/rpi/h_hail.html

I mentioned the Swarm, and I was under the impression that the Red Hawk was never used at hockey games. As far as Hail goes, I posted the official version, but I too say "true sons" and "each man." I could put in a mention that the words were changed.

it also might be fun if you could figure out how to insert the picture of Institute Rink that appears at the very bottom of this page: http://www.augenblick.org/rpi/h_index.html

I was thinking about including that picture in the rink section, but I need a version without the text on it.

I believe I can help with this, since when I was a student I was the "Chicken." Mostly it came about because the Institute (under SAJ's tutelage) tried to change the name of all sports teams, with the exception of hockey, to the "Red Hawks." She wanted to change the hockey team name too, but alumni threw a hissy and threatend their all important donation dollars, so a compromise was reached. This change was brought about because they didn't want to be known as just an engineering school. There are actually Red Hawk nests on the roof of the Pittsburgh building and others, so the name makes sense. The Red Hawk appeared at football and baseball games, and oter campus events, and tried to appear once at a hockey game, but it didn't go over so well and he never appeared there again. At one point, the Red Hawk was even being considered for "Meanest Man On Campus" during GM Week. At football games, chants of "KFC" and "Frank Perdue" arose from the stands, and the band even started playing The Chicken Dance, to which the very handsome and smart guy in the costume played along. Eventually, the Institute realized what a mistake it was making and changed all teams back to "Engineers," and the Red Hawk, or Chicken, was to never be seen again.

Jericho knows much more about the Chicken than I do. Somehow I missed the mention of the Swarm. What you wrote is fine.

I think just mentioning that the words of the fight song were changed is fine. You could say it was due to the changing demographics of the 'Tute. ;)

Lugnut, it also might be fun if you could figure out how to insert the picture of Institute Rink that appears at the very bottom of this page:

I love that pic of Institute Rink. Anyone have an idea of the vintage?

Of course I also like the picture of Houston Field House at the top of the page, primarily because it has the largest ever picture of my daughter ;). It has been awhile since I have been to Troy: are those two pictures still on the front of the building?

According to Kurt Stutt's book Skating Engineers, it's from about 1918. It's off Sage Ave, then called Avenue B, where Anderson Field is. A rink was first created there in 1912.

I downloaded a copy of that picture from that website several years ago before the words were added. I have it stored on my local drive. Give me your email in rep and I'll send it to you, or direct me to some file-sharing site you use and I'll upload it there.

Minor correction: The name change and mascot change was started during the R. Byron Pipes era.

Was Pipes the one adamant about returning the perception of the name to the Rensselaer school (that or thereabouts; I'll leave it to that name for the time being)? I recall reading there was a President from around the 90's (definitely before SAJ) who was very adamant about dumping the perception of "RPI", even going so far as to demanding the uniforms remove the diagonal RPI and instead put "Rensselaer" on there. Of course, I say "returning" since in 1824 it was the Rensselaer school, and later when several college departments were unified, it became a "Polytechnic Institute".
