Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Are they still frosted mugs that have a red R followed by an apostrophe and the two-digit year on them? I don't have mine. I think that my my mother threw them out.

Sorry to hear she threw them out, glassware is a prized possession! As for the design, they have since turned to themed GM weeks, so the theme appears, but so does the year. 2005 was PolyTEXAS, one of the years was Rock and Roll, I can't remember the other two as I'm not near the glasses.

EDIT:
2005 - PolyTEXAS
2006 - Yarrrr-PI
2007 - Institute of Rock
2008 - Movie theme

2010 - Welcome to Rensselaer (in the style of the famous Las Vegas sign)
2011 - "Blueprint" Bullet and "GM Week 2011"

Funny, after my dad passed away, (Class of 1962), I came across these mugs as we were cleaning out my grandmothers house. I still have the one with the R and 62 on it.

Sorry, should have added a smiley--"discouraged in class" was meant to be a joke. Of course you can't drink in class. Most professors allow water, and it's rare that they make announcements about not allowing food or drink in class. I know some students whose schedules don't allow them time for lunch, so they end up eating in class. It seems pretty rare that a teacher won't allow it as long as it's not a distraction.

Today is 23 March 2012. There are 197 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 6 October for the start of next season.

That is the day that an exhibition game is supposedly scheduled.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Any hockey news? :)
As the NCAA tournament begins, here's a raised-hockey-stick salute to Abbie Moore, the only RPI man ever to be named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. :)

Moore was only the second member of a championship team to win the award, which went to a player from the runner-up team in each of the tournament's first five years of existence, 1948-52.

Only once since 1960 has the award gone to a player who wasn't on the championship team. That, ironically, was in 1985, when RPI won the championship for the second time.

And if any player from a runner-up team in the last 50 years deserved the award, Chris Terreri did. The guy played out of his mind in that tournament.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Just curious, did anyone happen to notice if RPI rehung or replaced the ECAC logo and ECAC school banners that used to hang in the rafters before they repainted a couple summers ago?

I did not see them when I went to the AIC game.

They have not been put back up. Last I heard, the Field House staff was in the process of getting new banners, as the style of the old banners did not fit in with the look they were going for. I don't know what kind of progress they've made.

That makes sense. Thanks.

If it's going to be for their look, it'll probably be one large banner with all the teams, and then they'll hang it right in front of Kurt's location on the catwalk.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

Actually, the play by play guy has a slightly less unobstructed view than the color man does. I believe that I made the pictures that I took from the catwalk at BRF public on my Facebook page, if not, let me know and I can send you them. Kurt (or whoever the pbp man is, view is obstructed by the scoreboard mostly, whereas the color analyst has to contend with the scoreboard, tournament appearance banners, and a big ol' spotlight to our left that obstructs some of the view of the goal on the end where the stage used to be. Of course, it all depends on where the broadcasters like to stand, but generally this is the case.

This is why I said block PBP, because colour is already blocked by another banner. ;)

It's too bad they couldn't just move the banners over to the other side (or is that where the championship ones are?).

Great memories from EHF and DrD, thanks for sharing

I distinctly remember being served in a mechanics class during GM week. It may have been after noontime. Those memories are hazy. :)

This was 90 or 91.

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

When I played competitive sports, I always had mixed feelings about the team that knocked us out of the playoffs. While we would never actually "root" for them to win, there always was a grudging satisfaction when they did advance....sort of a "if it weren't for them, that might be us" feeling. The further they go, the further we might have gone had they not beaten us. Who knows, if they then went on to win the whole thing, we might have been the second-best team in the whole competition!

Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2012: An Off-Season to Be Optimistic

With both Cornell and Union advancing, could the ECAC get a boost as a league? What if they continue and wind up in the frozen four?
Would any of this matter in the conference shifts that will be taking place next year?
What if one of them were to win the National Championship? Crazier things have happened.
