Re: RPI Off-Season Thread 2011 Part II: The Bryce is Right
I love the Adirondacks-my family had vacationed and visited there for over 50 years and I worked in Speculator in the summers while going to Medical School in Albany. But for the most part, nothing much changes up there-and it is because the great equalizer is the winter. It is very hard and even dangerous to have to commute from there wintertime which limits earnings and job opportunities. It takes a special breed to live there full time. This is also why we kept the home in NJ and up until recently our other home in Florida (which we sold a couple years ago). I am glad that little changes up there-the Adirondack Park and its 6+million acre extent is still one of the best kept secrets. Most of it is still pristine and I truly hope it stays that way.
The town where I grew up didn't lose power for long either, but since I was on the outskirts, we lost power for 5 days. Having lived up there for 15 years, Syracuse lake effect, although a different bear in itself, is a cakewalk compared to those 15 years (plus 4 from college in between semesters).
