RPI MMXI III: Overanalyzing The Iron Men and Other Uses of Internet Bandwidth

...although Beauregard's apparent goal was waved off. It was on the other side of the rink, so I couldn't see if it went in or just hit a pipe. ...

I was definitely a goal...we saw it from our side, but equally telling was that both teams stopped skating -- THEY knew it was a goal and were waiting for the refs to figure it out. I will renew my long held complaint that our goal judges are AWFUL.

The red light went on, and the referee immediately waved it off. I know it's only an exhibition, but now I feel REALLY bad for Kevin, working really hard in practices, getting his chance to take one from the point, only to have the ref say no. At least he got a point last year, so he isn't completely off the score tallies.

You're definitely right about the goal judges.

Re: RPI MMXI III: Overanalyzing The Iron Men and Other Uses of Internet Bandwidth

As far as I could remember, I had not seen either ref before; Leonard is listed as an ECAC ref, Graber has done ECAC before but looks like he's spent his time recently in the CHL. I liked that after the game I was able to say "Wow, I hardly noticed the officials tonight." A hard-fought game without the ticky-tack calls to slow down the flow.

After looking at box scores, Graber also did the exhibition against UNB to start off the season. Quite a bit more penalties in that one, but that was a rough and tumble game against a big UNB squad so not surprising.
Agreed about the officials - they let them play. Which was a refreshing change...and the players responded by playing great hockey without the worry of ticky tack BS. Linesman Glen Cooke is an AHL guy and an ECAC regular. Leonard and Graber are ECAC.

It would have been nice for KB to find the scoresheet. I was happy that he and Justin Smith got quality minutes. What a great experience for our younger D-men to have logged so much ice time against blue chippers...that will definitely pay off down the road. Bo Dolan was on fire --love that kid.

I didn't think that it went in, and in any case, it was an exhibition game, so it wouldn't have counted. Even so, it's too bad for him.

I thought I may have heard a crossbar, but I immediately saw the ref waving it off.

Perhaps this is the beginning of the wave of change Paul Stewart has promised? Obviously change doesn't happen overnight, as even we have seen.

There's no way it was a goal. It wouldn't have even been reviewed if not for the red light going and the horn going off, practically necessitating a stoppage. Give the Engineers credit for trying to milk it into counting, but they got the call right.

Also, given the shootout result, I gotta ask... exhibition or not, how many either game-winning goals, game-tying goals, or game-changing moments (like a goal or perfect assist on a clutch moment like the tying goal against Union on Black Saturday) does Marty O'Grady have? Yes, Pirri and D'Amigo are solid hockey players, and CJ is very important for a power line, but I may argue that Marty is probably our most important pick-up from that year's recruiting class.

I had the same thought about MO'G. Have there been any other such gaols besides for these two?

Game winner against Michigan, game tying goal against UPEI last year, I'm sure there's some other moments I'm not thinking of.

I would add that Higgs has a similar flair for the dramatic. If Marty can get his scoring going as we head into the beef of our schedule, this team will be scary good.

We can agree to disagree. Players shoot thousands of pucks in their lives, and they know when a puck goes in and out and when its a clanger. Both teams stopped skating...in my mind it was a tally. Given that were no goal cameras, I doubt the video review was conclusive.

Who on the team DOESN'T have a similar flair for the dramatic?! Seriously, I love watching this team, but I don't want a near heart attack every game.

I'm not sure Higgs is quite there yet. Yes, he stepped up during RIT and Niagara, but aside from that, pretty tame. All of the players have been starting to step up here and there, like also Rogic, Dolan, and AAG, but Marty's just one of those players you completely forget about until it's too late.

Agreed-this team has shown they can play with anyone-including the best the USA has to offer under age 20 and the number 1 team and the former number 2 team. They are good-with a little more experience they coould indeed be scary good.

Well, Team USA certainly didn't stop playing. They went after the rebound off the crossbar hard. We've got an excellent viewpoint from the catwalk, and it certainly did not go in the net. There's no way it did given the noise it made and the angle at which it came out of the goalmouth. The referees were also in perfect position to make the call and they immediately waved it off. Without the horn going off play probably would have simply continued.

The freshmen and new defensemen have already shown they can play with anyone. The freshmen forwards have show some flash but not yet enough in the scoring department. If and when that happens, and it will, this team will be everyone else's nightmare to play against. If it all comes together for this March-watch out!!!

Obviously I wasn't there and could not hear or see what happened-but usually the biggest clue is given by the goaltender-if he hears it clang off the post or crossbar he continues to stay in position to make the next save-if he heard nothing and felt it was by him he often stands up. You were in one of the best postions to see it and see the goalie reaction. Sounds to me like it was a clear no goal.

If you think Higgs has been tame, then we have nothing to discuss. The kid clearly has a nose for the net and burying rebounds. He would've scored RPI's first goal last night, if not for an NHL caliber glove save from Campbell. 10 pts. in 16 games (5th on the team, 3rd among forwards) is a great start for a true freshman.
