RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

I don't know if anyone got a chance to watch this game last night, but it was a dandy. A great game to watch. The US carried most of the play until the last 4 minutes or so, holding a two-goal lead. Canada stepped up the pressure and tied the game. I had a feeling that if it went to a shootout, then that was in Canada's favor.

Anyway, a very nice game by D'Amigo and the commentators had some very good things to say about him. He won just about every puck battle he was in. Had some great passes, included one with him streaking down the wing and looking up at the clock (in full stride) as time ran out and made the pass to Johnson in front for the score. I really like his game. I said a year or so ago that I thought he reminded me of Scott Gomez. I'd be interested in people's take on that.
I saw the last period and the very end of the 2nd. I thought the US was the stronger team. We are faster but perhaps just a little less skilled. Campbell looks very very good in net. Jerry is strong on his skates and he is playing on the top line so obviously the coaches thing a lot of him. I think the play to Johnson was a shot - not a pass. It was either a very bad pass or a freakishly good one if he tried to bank it off the goalie so Johnson could spin and bat it in with his backhand. Nonetheless he showed great game awareness on the play. I think he is a better pro prospect than Pirri - time will tell. Glad to have both of those kids on the Engineers!

I predict a rematch of the US and Canada in the finals.

I think that Pirri has the greater potential if he can put on weight. Due to his play with the USNTDP, D'Amigo has had a higher level of competition and is more polished now. I too am glad that we have both.

I see them as different players. Both might make it as a 2nd liner but staying on one of the top 2 lines in the NHL long term is a difficult task. I believe that Jerry fits the 3rd line role as a speed/defense guy better than Brandon. A versatile 2nd/3rd liner is more valuable than a 2nd liner that is more offense oriented.

I agree that Brandon has plenty of time to put on some muscle and become a more rounded two way player.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

FYI: One of the 'names' under consideration when we were searching for a coach a few years ago popped up in the news today... Andy Murray coach of the St Louis Blues, was fired today.

Seth's a keeper in more ways than one. ;)

Jerry played fantastic in the very little ice time he was given. The US coach is a very poor on ice coach, he over-shifted guys who weren't even playing that good for most of the game and especially in the third. The game was lost by the coach, not the players. The captain of the team is not very good and played almost the entire freaking period, blew their PP by passing on open/uncontested shots from the circle like 4-5 times in a row. The US ended up playing a crappy trap style with sitting 4 back and having 1 pass up which was into 3 Canadians waiting for it. Really poor coaching in the third lost a won game against a Canadian team that did not put forth anywhere near their best effort.
By the way, Jerry is on the second line as well as second PP unit.

Agreed-they are very different types on the ice. Both have the potential to make it as far as the NHL but the one with the more obvious offensive stats will get the first look see. Interestingly from what I have seen so far, I also think D'Amigo will start to get more attention as a 2 way player. Offensive potential gets you noticed for sure, but overall game quality is what gets you to stick at those levels. I am beginning to wonder what adding an offensive threat like Laliberte will bring to the mix for next year?

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

From the stats on CHS, it's now time for The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly:

The Good: Brandon Pirri is now once again above 1 PPG. 22 points in 21 games. I know he's had some rough luck with reputation and thereby drawing the top defensemen to shut him down, but I'm happy to see him power through. He'll be great to watch in the next 3.5 years.

The (somewhat, but not so) Bad: Chase Polacek, despite being very high in most standings, loses his point streak at 14. But hey, Joe DiMaggio didn't get to 57. All streaks must come to an end. I am very pleased with his consistent play, and although he may not be a show-off all-star, he's a terrific asset to this team, and any team he may play for in the future.

The Ugly: Our goalies each have over a 2.50 GAA (Allen York's being 3.04). I realize they've been standing on their heads lately and you're not going to stop everything, but perhaps this is a sign that we need to start controlling games. I know it's tough without the size and the two-game stamina especially against very tough teams, but I'd like to see a few periods each weekend where the puck doesn't even come close to our end (with the exception of a penalty kill or a clear). Our defense has held up, but I think now is the time to control the games, and that will help us to be an above-500 team.

This was the most hilarious post of 2010 so far.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

D'Amigo with 2 goals tonight (one ENG), as USA beats Finland 6-2.

I just caught the very end of the game (and fortunately did see the ENG), but announcers gave JD'A very high praise for his work creating the empty net goal off of his blocked shot. Better yet, they commented on his overall game - "if D'Amigo isn't named player of the game, there should be an investigation".

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

D'Amigo was a monster tonight. I suspect we're going to get a much different player back when this tournament is over - he's been a two-way demon for the USA.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Everyone who is close enough to Lake Placid should pencil in the US World Jr. camp held every August. You simply can't beat the quality of hockey that is in town that week. The US has two teams for the week and they invite some other countries to participate in the round robin. The Swedes and Fins are usual invitees. This year Russia was here and Switzerland was here in past years. That's the first time I saw D'Amigo. Great hockey and lightly attended.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

What I'm saying is is the knee injury appears to be non-existent now. He looks very smooth and confident out there.

That is wonderful news. The thought had crossed my mind that this could have been a nagging season long problem-I think he has disspelled that with his play in the tournament. Having a healthy D'Amigo and Bergin and Lee will make this team far more competitive.

They better start their investigation, because Mike Lee won Player of the Game. I know D'Amigo has already won one, but if Eberle won a second for the neighbors to the north, then why can't D'Amigo?

And on a tangent, why is my spell-checker on here demanding British spelling?
