Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020 Part II: Moving on with 2020 Vision!

Whoa. Back when the Field House was packed,, the band was on the stage, RPI or Vermont has no nameplates on their jerseys, section 1 was in existence, and WRPI had two announcers I never heard before :D.

BTW, someone needs to ask if the stage is ever coming back ;)

I listened to those announcer voices on the BRF clip above. . One of those two sounds very familiar to me but I just can't place the name...

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020 Part II: Moving on with 2020 Vision!

Harvard, given they have the lowest number of total penalty minutes.

Harvard has also played far less games than most other teams.
Anyways, the answer is it's us! RPI has the lowest Penalty Minutes per Game at 7.50.
From what everyone says about Appert and undisciplined teams under him, I doubt they ever were near the top of this category under him

I listened to the clip a few times, and I can’t place the voice with a name either.

Freakout trivia question: without looking it up, name the only current ECAC team who has never played in the Freakout.

And this is also the first non-league Freakout game in RPI history (unless you count the weekend series against Lake Superior in 1985 which was considered an unofficial Freakout weekend).

One of the announcers calls the other Jim near the end of the clip.

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020 Part II: Moving on with 2020 Vision!

I remember Jim Brennan used to call RPI games during the ‘80s. Not sure if he was still doing them in ‘94.
He used to be a sportscaster for Channel 6 in Schenectady.

It is definitely Jim Brennan. If you watch the full telecast, he is introduced as the play-by-play guy (Al Shibley on color commentary). Here is the cued-up intro of Brennan from the full video: https://youtu.be/aUDv53rCW6E?t=64

Edit: for extra confirmation, Ed Dague throws it up to the booth at the 19:59 mark, where Brennan introduces himself and Shibley.

1987 Feb. 7 Brown W 8-3 Horn

After the soccer World Cup in South Africa, I referred to that year's Freakout souvenir as a "vuvuzela" which I think better conveys the noise level of that night to sports fans unfamiliar with the Freakout. I still have mine, although it is cracked and in bad shape.

The tuque for the 40th was a nice souvenir and my favorite since getting season tickets in '10-'11.

Ah yes, the Brown rule...

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020 Part II: Moving on with 2020 Vision!

Nice try. But as you can see by what Turk posted, the answer is Harvard.

Of course. We wouldn't want to burden Harvard with thinking about a league rivalry in early February when they should be focused on the Beanpot.

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020 Part II: Moving on with 2020 Vision!

Our boys played perhaps their best game of the last several seasons tonight. This one is a two gimlet victory celebration followed by a little Cognac night cap! We have been waiting (and actually expecting) this team to start to show what they can do when they put together a full 60 minutes of energy and focus. We knew there was talent and tonight they showed a lot of it.

The funny thing about this game is that they had so many chances that they didn't cash in on by failing to get a shot off or missing a wide open net (plus one or two amazing saves by Clark). Dartmouth is theoretically one of the better teams in the league, but for the vast majority of this game we walked all over them. I was particularly impressed with Polino, who aside from one or two miscues, was a force on the ice. He laid out a number of big hits and added a goal.

It was just one of those games where almost everything went right and everyone made the right moves at the right time. Our young defense was close to perfect (one exception and if the clock was 1 second faster it would have meant nothing).

In re: one of those games where almost everything went right.

Just hope they remember that today' s game is against a different team. You have to compete against everyone every night.

It was a great performance, but take it with a grain of salt. Dartmouth played a horrible game. They were beaten to the puck most of the night and had very poor D zone coverage. I talked to a parent of one of their players who said “We are a Jekyll and Hyde team. Never know what you are going to get. Win big against Cornell. Lose big to RPI. “ The Union Dartmouth game will be an interesting one. RPI has to beat Vermont tonight. Not to be all negative, RPI skated all night with few lapses and you could point to several players as stars of the game. And Savory was strong.

Most of Dartmouth's horrible game had to do with our energy and intensity. I don't think that they were expecting what we gave them.
I have no expectations for tonight. Too often over the years when we play a great game and you think that they are on the right track, they throw in a dud the following night.
I can only hope that this team is different.

Lets Go Red!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
