Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020: Nordic Combined

They clearly don't do their research if we are underdogs against Merrimack. They're absolutely garbage just like Canisius

We are only the slightest of underdogs in that one (actually predicting a 3-3 tie) but as I mentioned I think they are getting about 1/2 goal advantage due to home ice which I do not think they deserve. As you know the tougher game on paper is the first night and it is quite possible these odds will change by Saturday morning. This source has been very reliable and more often correct than almost any other place I have looked.

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020: Nordic Combined

Those garbage Merrimack guys played a tie and a one-goal loss against UMass last weekend.

However, home ice has not been kind to them. The UMass tie came in Amherst, the loss at home. Overall, Merrimack is 0-4-1 in home games.

RPI on the road is 3-2-1.

All true and they gave Northeastern all they could handle the week before. Mack has 4 one goal losses and two ties to boot. Knowing our luck, Modry will have a hat trick...:)

I could eliminate that possibility by taking him in he PtC. :D

That tweet was the first I heard of the name, but MC and UML are referring to it that way.

BTW, PSU is playing the two MA schools in the opposite order.

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020: Nordic Combined

For some reason, UML has scheduled their Turkey Leg Classic game against RPI for Friday afternoon at 4:00 and their game against Penn State for Saturday at 6:00.

Merrimack will play Penn State on Friday and RPI on Saturday, with game time at 7:00 both nights.

Thanks for the heads up, I am sure that I would have missed the 4 o'clock game on Friday.

Odds for tonight's game:
RPI -110
Merrimack -130

I don't think they have looked at the basic goals per game and goals against per game metric considering those odds :D

The best i can find shows a 46% MC win percentage and a 42% RPI. Predicted score is a 3-3 tie. The betting odds are as even as one could ever usually find. RPI would be considered a slight favorite if not for home ice advantage. Hockey is one sport where the odds makers always consider that home ice advantage from being given the final change on ice at any face off. This game may turn out to be the pivotal point of the season. We just suffered a bad loss to a fairly good team after having played most of our games at a better level. We are facing a team that on paper we could and perhaps should, be able to beat even on the road. Good teams do just that, win the games they are expected to win and tonight we have to prove to ourselves we are indeed one of those teams. LGR!!!

Re: RPI Hockey 2019 - 2020: Nordic Combined

Tough game last night. My son and I left with 1 minute to play - something we never do but we had seen more than enough and we also wanted to get out before the teams were coming off the ice (Merrimack blocks the aisle when teams are coming on and off the ice). The compete level was there but the execution was just off. My takes on the game:

- Their goalie outplayed ours by a wide margin
- They clogged up the middle down low on D and we couldn't get shots through nor get to 2nd chances when shots did get through
- We seem to have a soft spot in the high slot on D - coach needs to fix that
- Reilly had a bad night - on the ice for 4 GA, including the first one 30 seconds in. Shot the puck into legs on the PP... just seemed to force things. Too focused on O.
- The PP seemed too reliant on setting up the D for one timers rather than looking for other options. They need to mix things up a little more here and there.

I'm curious about the new rule that allows teams to dress 7 D (or 13 F) and wonder if it trips up some coaches and teams. If all 7 are rotating then it has gotta be confusing to have rotating partners out there. Perhaps the extra never skates, or you use it to have one guy who is a specialist on the PK or PP. It seems like a change that wasn't really needed (IMO).

It also helps keep 4 lines and 3 sets of D if there is an injury or match penalty, assuming that someone can switch between forward and defense.
