Well then i am disappointed. Thankfully I, like you, had to take German at RPI in the early sixties as they did not offer Spanish at all and only advanced French. Could have taken Russian or Japanese but I would be slow to adapt to a new alphabet.

My recollection was that the only other option was Russian.

I suspect that my mother wasn't exactly happy that I took courses in German at RPI. I was told that all four of my grandparents wanted me to be bilingual but my parents didn't want me to learn German. Most likely my mother was the one who didn't want me to learn German when young and my father was smart enough to listen to my mother. :) My father left Germany in 1934 and probably didn't suffer much. OTOH, my mother, born in 1920, left in 1939 and spent most of her teenage years under Nazi rule.

I have calculated that I have now spent considerably more on German courses since I retired than my entire undergrad education cost. Of course that doesn't allow for inflation. :)

I grew up in an Italian home. My Mother being the oldest of her siblings had my Grandparents live with us. They were from Italy & spoke Italian. My Mother had an Italian accent thru her teens as did her 3 siblings. They were all fluid. Hence, Italian was never to be spoken around me & my 3 siblings. Of course they did but we were never taught. Something we all regret. Ah, but we were all taught how to cook!

They did offer French but only if you already had 3 or 4 years in high school as it was an advanced course only. Japanese was listed but as you said, Russian was the only legitimate option. Although i never felt the courses in German would be of benefit, I can recall lots of times that it came in handy as we had a large population of elderly and retire German folks near my second office.

Dr. D, where do you get all this information about betting favorites in college hockey games? At the casinos in Atlantic City?

I never want to bet on an RPI hockey game. I've learned the hard way that any time I bet on a team that I root for, they lose. :(

The language requirement for Science majors has been eliminated at RPI since then.

I don't recall that. I would have been eligible for French but would have steered away from it. As to Russian, I had the same reaction you did. The different alphabet would have caused me the same trouble as it did in Hebrew. Then again, a few months ago I translated a letter written by my great-great-grandmother to my great-great-grandfather supposedly in 1821, She had found out that day that she was promised in marriage to him, They had not met yet. :eek: The letter is not in Hebrew or Yiddish but in High German using the Hebrew alphabet. (I did cheat since I also have a transcription in old German script written by my great-grandfather, probably for the benefit of my grandfather and his siblings.) No sir - the information comes from what we here in NJ would call euphemistically a "private betting service". Jenny's Italian heritage has made for some very interesting connections in the past. Personally I am not a bettor and we have lived fairly close to Atlantic City for many years. I am more concerned with capital conservation (keeping what i worked so hard for) as opposed to attempts at appreciation. My only gambling involves investments on Wall Street. i consider that as a sort of educated wagering.
BTW as i should mention, the odds and numbers I have been posting can change hour to hour and actually some times, minute to minute. There is not a lot of wagering done on hockey in general as the games are just too close for much of a point spread. The major betting is usually football and basketball - sports in which my expertise and interest is very little.

Agreed. Rivalry games can be unpredictable. Last year's sweep over Union is a good example.

A very good performance tonight. Dominated the first two periods. RPI's aggressive forecheck was causing Union all kinds of problems, but then they backed off in the 3rd and Union got back into the game. Hansen made some good saves to keep Union close. Less good: there were two silly errors that almost cost RPI: a suicidial pass in front of RPI's own goal that was intercepted for Union's first goal, and then RPI had a goal waved off on review because a player skated offside on a *2-on-1*.

If Fridgen's players were all "bad", he did better with them than Seth did. As a matter of fact, Seth did jack with his own "good" players! Then, the "good" players bolted to the pros early!
