RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

Thanks for sending that out, Ralph. It brings back a lot of memories for me, as I attended more than half of them (from 1974 to 2010). The team from Sweden was from Vasby, Sweden. I remember them putting a puck in their own net during a delayed penalty. Not a great memory, but they were really not a very good squad. It was a shame that it had to end, but no one wanted to step up as a sponsor.

I had been to every one of them from 1963-2001. With Jenny from 1975-2001, without her for the earlier ones. It was a bucket load of hockey over 2 and earlier 3 days. Sure some of the early games were in an almost empty HFH, but you got to see teams that virtually never came to Troy and future NHL players early in their careers. I preferred the tournament when held in late December but did not mind the ones held in November around Thanksgiving.

I stopped going the first time it moved to Thanksgiving and only started going again years later.

At first i hated the move to the earlier date. But then we discovered Jack's Chinese food on Route 5 and had Turkey Lo Mein and Sweet and Sour turkey, and Turkey Fried Rice etc. for the Holiday. Later on we made it an annual trip to Jack's Oyster House downtown Albany instead which made for a really nice holiday meal (especially if you ordered from their 1912 memorial menu). I understand the reasons for ending the tournament but have to say I miss it and would love for it to be started again.

Merry xmas
Placid or bust

"Merry Christmas!" to those who celebrate, and "Einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr!" to all. (I decided that the German pre-New Year greeting (a good slide into the new year" is more accurate than a simple "Happy New Year!")

Are you planning to invade somewhere?

I only attended a handful of those games, but my best memory was of my first one. We played UMass Lowell and played the most perfect offensive game that I have seen an Engineer team play to date,

They beat Roloson and who ever his back up was for 12 goals to win the tournament. That 93/94 team was a joy to watch.

EHF- I think I recall us only scoring 11 in that game but we did score 12 in the first game against Mt Allison which may have been a last minute fill in for the tournament. I only remember the total goals since in those days Jen and i had a swig of cherry brandy after each of our goals and neither of us could get up and leave the HFH after either game.

My memory isn't what it used to be, so if it was 11, I stand corrected. Still, it seemed that every pass was right on the stick and all of the goals were picture perfect. If my memory hasn't totally left me, I believe that we chased Roloson, and then chased the back up, so that Roloson had to come back in. Just a great game for the Engineers.

You have the details down well. Roloson was one of the top goalies in the country at the time. The first 6 goals were unstoppable and he made about 4 other spectacular saves or it could have been 10 early. he came back in later but i cannot recall if we scored more against him because by the mid third period both of us were totally tanked. Not sure if went to the Castaways or Casey's East but this was one of the best I had seen an RPI team play in a long time. The tournament in 1984 where we beat Miami 9-1 and then Lake Superior State was perhaps my favorite two games in a tournament at HFH but the pair in 1993 was probably my second favorite.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

I have a lot of good memories of the tournament. First puck I ever got was an incredibly chewed up Swedish one handed to me by a Vasby player after warmups for one of the games. Sad it doesn't exist, but I stopped going every year.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

Happy Holidays to all.

A Christmas Wish List for Coach Appert:

1) A stay at home defenseman (or two or three)

2) A powerplay that can gain the zone, keep the puck in the offensive end and not self-clear because nobody remembered to hold the point

3) Players who look before they pass and who look even before they get the pass so they have an idea what to do with the puck when they get it

4) Elimination of mindless penalties

5) Improvement on face-offs

and most importantly

6) Ending the season on an 8-game winning streak :)

Correct, 12-1 vs Mt. 11-3 vs M-L. I couldn’t find a boxscore though..... http://www.augenblick.org/rpi/h_06yr.html

Thanks Turk for the link. I try not to look any of these things up and rely on memory. At my age it helps (i think) to keep me sharper and in focus. I avoid being a search engine kind of guy or a Googler. I may be faulted at times for a mistake or a misspelling but I post with the best of intentions. I had thought those were the scores and remember that Mt. Allison was a late fill in for the first game. The win over UML surprised me as i felt we were a distinct underdog. But the number of goals we put in on Roloson was mind blowing and as EHF mentioned, none were cheap in nature. I also recall how similar the UML uniforms were to the NY Rangers uniforms of that period.

Very nice list. Even if we only get the first 5, the last one may not be necessary. It would just follow naturally.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

I'm awfully late, but Merry Christmas to everyone. May all of your wishes have come true. Time to see the 31-year-cycle come to fruition.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

With less than a week until our next game, I thought it would be a good idea to get this back to the top.
With the student body on break, does the team get to spend more time in Ohio getting ready for this weekends games?

I don't know, but I suspect not.
