RPI Hockey 2014-2015 Part II: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015 Part II: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

Hmm... if Three Blind Mice is potentially controversial, I wonder if you could play "Do You See What I See" and avoid the controversy.... ;)

The Three Stooges theme sounds like it would be pretty challenging for band instruments to handle....

My senior year @ Clarkson, we played 3 blind mice after Pierre Belanger put our goalie in the box for a minor - yes, you read that right! Made us put our backup goalie in for a minor penalty. Cornell scored and the game ended in a tie. He threatened up with a minor, so we stopped. After the game, several of us band members went to the officials dressing room and played that song for 10 minutes straight.

The ECAC never allowed Belanger to referee another Clarkson game... I don't know how much longer he was in the league, because I never saw him again.

The only time I remember it being "called" by the band conductor was the home game vs. Union in 2008, when Dan Peace received a fighting major despite not losing his gloves, and Union, as is typical with the league, hadn't received anything practically at all, maybe one or two. It was our four referee trial game, and I remember it was a fairly new ref (Baker, who still refs today; and I remembered it specifically because I have an uncle-by-marriage with the same name that I loathe) that called it. I saw him talking with the scorers bench while it was happening; not sure if they had to talk him down or something.

Brings up a point I referenced in a score thread... officials are required, by rule, to have a copy of the rule book at the penalty bench during the course of the game. Is it acceptable for a coach to request a reference from the rule book in the case of a discrepancy like that? Granted, given the shaft you received in that game, I'd assume no.

I don't have a 1990 rule book. The closest which I have is 1981. :) It states "Any minor time penalty incurred by a goalkeeper, whether for a foul within his privileged area or elsewhere, shall be served by a teammate on the ice at the time of the infraction and chosen by his captain." It sounds petty clear to me.

Goalies still have to serve majors or misconducts, but I assume neither of those were in play.

I am pretty sure in the NHL the goalie has to serve his own penalty if it's a "third man in" deal. Another player on the team serves any minor, double minor, major, or misconduct penalty assessed to a goalie. Obviously he is removed from the game if he earns a game misconduct or match penalty (or three majors in one game). See Rule 28 - Goalkeeper's Penalties for more details.

Drshoen wrote "for a minor". Perhaps he was referring to a little-known rule that players under 21 years of age don't have to serve their own penalties. ;)

Of course, if that sort of thing happened to our team, the ref would be given a raise.

Ralph, it was indeed a minor penalty - I think the goalie in question was a senior at the time, so he may or may not have been a "minor". And if I recall correctly, there was no other penalties called at the same time (so I don't think it was a third-man in situation).

Pierre Belanger-still a name that forces me to take an extra Nexium and a swig of Maalox. I have had a difficult time accepting the calls of a number of officials but there were always the top two. Those who caused me physical illness. Pierre was one and Mike Noeth the other. I recall a home game at HFH during which Belanger took a puck to the back of his head. It knocked him absolutely stone cold. He had to be carried off on a stretcher and was still not mobing when he was removed. Normally a hockey audience sits in silence for something like that. Most of HFH was standing and cheering. Not exactly a beloved character in Troy.

I wasn't doubting you. As DrD said, we didn't exactly love him either.
