RPI Hockey 2014-2015 Part II: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015 Part II: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

Personally, I’ld go with Scotty but with a short leash. FWIW, Buffalo has traded their starting G to the Islanders for their backup G (who’s been pretty bad this year). Here’s what Buffalos depth chart in goal looks like...... Anders Lindback
Matt Hackett (M)
Nathan Lieuwen (M)
Andrey Makarov (M)
Linus Ullmark (E)
Jason Kasdorf (C)
Calvin Petersen (C)
Jonas Johansson (E)
M = Minors J = Juniors C = College E = Europe.......Chad Johnson would now have to be added.

What?? The main reason we won Saturday night was because of Scotty. It was as good a goalie performance we've seen in quite some time. The kid gave us hope. He was unbelievable. Nothing against Kazzy, but I'm with jstadts, I don't know how you wouldn't start him this weekend. If this team is going to do anything this post-season we need a hot goalie and we all know it. I understand 1 game doesn't make a "hot" goalie, but what have we got to lose? If he plays like he did on Saturday night, we play with the intensity we did on Saturday and we stop taking stupid penalties, this team can get through the first round.

As long as I'm posting for the first time in about 2 years, I would sit Wood & Devito. They aren't getting the message on staying out of the box. I was beside myself when Devito was in the lineup Saturday night after his brainless (and dangerous) knee-to-knee hit on the Clarkson player. Give me Gillespie and Fulton in their place. Gillespie is a better matchup with Clarkson's size anyway.

That is all.

Welcome home TB! Nice post. I would love Gillespie and Fulton in the lineup but I think Travis is hurt more severely than our publicity department would want anyone to know. But Kenny G should be in there and make his presence felt. As far as goaltending-go with either one and just have #2 ready quickly. And go back to #1 if needed.

Alternating every few minutes in most cases is a horrible idea. As I'm sure many can attest, one important thing in any game, where sport, e-sport, board, card, whatever, is rhythm, as that sort of flow can help you in the game. The trick with any rhythm, of course, is to make sure you are always in control. Sometimes, the rhythm can carry you, making the transitioning of strategies all the more difficult. I would not completely sacrifice rhythm for the sake of trying to outwit the opponent. That being said, if we were to win game 1, it'd be a very interesting dynamic to pepper their goalie with shots, and after our goalie gets a couple shots on him, go up and get an offsides (obviously try not to make it intentional, and then swap the goaltender at the stoppage. Yes, it takes the mini-game scenario I recall Ralph (or someone else) mentioning to a whole new level, understanding it's a full game 3, but it may work against a team with what would seem to be a hot goaltender.
Did you really take that literally as every few minutes? Dude, it was meant to say just remove and replace either if he is showing he is not into the game. And if #2 shows similarly, then you have to do something again. The season is winding down, you play each game and each period as if there is not going to be another.

Yes, I did. Thank you for the clarification. :)

If, if, if, and...if. Practice this week could indeed be intense and competitive for those guys you mentioned. As far as the goalie postion goes,MAYBE if Diebold was great all week he would get the start. Appert has said all along that this team will go as far as kasdorf can take it. Also, he is the guy next year and you don't want him to go into the off-season with the feeling that the coach doesn't have confidence in him.

Scotty is a senior playing his last games. That might easily give him extra motivation, an enhanced sharpness that comes from the realization that it really, truly, actually in a tangible way is "now or never" for him. Some people are distracted by that pressure, some people respond really well to it.

Was it only for his start on Senior Night that he had that extra edge? Or might it carry over for another game or two?

Regarding Kasdorf and next year, aren't some folks really excited about the new goalie prospect who will be arriving in the fall? won't there be an open competition for the starter's job then? I cannot imagine someone who is in training for a pro career would get all sulky and distracted over whether he starts or whether he comes in as a substitute, you have to be 100% focused on the team's play and 0% concerned with transient personal considerations like ego. If you see the other goalie making a mistake in positioning, you help him correct it, you don't keep quiet about it so that you can get the start in his place!

I am excited about Dillon's arrival. His numbers in the USHL are much better than Kasdorf's were although it is due in large part to playing on a better team than JK did.

Whatever happens this weekend, I just want to see Kazzy get back to where he was two years ago. It's depressing that he's seemingly fallen so far from that stellar season.

I am with you on this one. I am not sure what the difference is due to. I do not think this is all physical by any means. I have always felt a big part of a goalie's game has to be mental. They just cannot have a let down or it is one in the net. Every other player can have a moment where they are not totally sharp and yet the puck may not end up in the net. Two years ago Jason seemed just so much in control of himself and the game around him. Every game he seemed to make all the right moves, covering angles, deflecting pucks, getting much need stoppages in play. He just seemed secure and decisive. This year there are times he seems like the game is not coming naturally to him, that he has to think more, and there is an element of being indecisive. Perhaps his injury and surgery has something to do with it, perhaps it is something else. Here's hoping he gets it all back (I strongly think he will) since he was a pleasure to watch and when he is on track, he controls and determines outcomes of games.

Quality post, especially on Diebold and Devito - goalie got a win against a dangerous team, and a nitwit bombing around causing trouble. Can't have that in the playoffs.

Another quality post. You have to play to win, they've had all season to get a rhythm, not wait 2 periods in a playoff series to find one....

Rookie of the Week — Drew Melanson, RPI

The freshman forward had three goals as the Engineers went 1-0-1 over the weekend. He scored once against Clarkson and had two against St. Lawrence, including the game-winner on a penalty shot late in the third period.

Expect this from Weaver not schott

Maybe Melanson switched jerseys with McGowan prior to the penalty shot... Not! :)

Link?

I feel that Schott is as even handed as he can be considering that he works for the Schenectady paper.

I agree with RPI fan for life. :)

Just the Union grad school I believe, not the college ;)
Good luck in the playoffs !

I know they're separate entities (and have been for 10+ years), but that kind of kills the joke now, doesn't it. :D
