Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

Waite: You have left out the fact that we had a chance to build that 36-28 lead with about 3 minutes left as we drove down to the 23 yard line and set up for a Franks field goal that would have given us an almost unsurmountable 11 point lead. Unfortuantely, one of the most accurate and best legs in the country did not come through with that 40 yard attempt. This was an awesome game against an offensive powerhouse that gained about 500 yards. Overall, we perhaps did not deserve to win giving up that much offense, but we had it firmly in our grasp and as you mention, a converted kick after a TD or that last field goal(in very reachable range for the best kicker in RPI history), and we never have to go to OT.

Makes you wonder if, during the Springfield game, Franks really did have a bad injury that hampered him, as he missed a number of FGs during the Union game as well.

Reading WaP's commentary, which includes video, from what I see on the overhead, Melanson's stick trips Peca.

Yeah right... and there was a 2nd shooter in the corner that the video didn't capture.

Give it up FD... you are wrong. Show some maturity and admit it. Be a bigger man than you are. Or maybe just be a man for once. Peca was clearly already going down before he touches Melanson's stick. He was sliding to block the cage from MP. There is absolutely no doubt about that.

At some point you transition from a contrarian to an idiot. I suggest that this happened about a week ago on this issue.

Remember Grasshopper, ignore the troll. Be above idiocy.

Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

The WaP commentary on the non goal against Quinnipiac was extensive, researched, and supported. No question the call made by the officials was wrong and can not be supported in any way. As was mentioned, who knows what the outcome of the game would have been-a tie, an OT loss or an RPI win. But certainly it should have played out differently for the last minutes of the game. Only time will tell if possibly losing one or two points in the ECAC standings and losing a head to head comparison with QU will make a difference at the end of the season. It would be a shame if it does.

Some could argue that it did in 2011 with the Union wave-off. However, one thing you cannot argue: We had plenty of other chances to tie it, even with an extra attacker, and didn't do it. It's two points, and who's next on the docket?

Dr. D, that's true, I did leave out the fact that Franks came up short on a field goal attempt in the fourth quarter. I also left out the fact that he missed one in the first quarter. Both of the kicks were from distances that we have come to consider as being within his range.

There's an article in the current Sports Illustrated about last year's Auburn-Alabama game, which Auburn won by returning a short field goal attempt for a TD on the last play of the game. The article spends some time focusing on the regular Alabama kicker, Cade Foster, who entered the game in some discomfort from tendinitis in his left leg, which made it hurt to plant his foot. Foster converted all four extra points during the game but failed on three field goal attempts.

After the game, there were death threats on Foster's Twitter account and the Tuscaloosa police department saw fit to station a policeman outside his apartment. They take their football seriously down in Dixie.

Maybe, as has been suggested, Andrew Franks, like Cade Foster, was suffering from a nagging injury. Then again, maybe it was just a matter of the wind being against him. Or maybe he just had a bad game.

Doesn't change the fact that, as you said, he's been the best kicker RPI's ever had. All RPI football fans owe him thanks for a great four years.

I am by no means any sort of authority on football kicking. But it appears to me that he has about the liveliest leg and incredible consistency. From what i see of the pros though, the single most important thing to look for is how fast he can get to the ball after it is snapped, and how quickly he can elevate the ball for a distance kick. it is one thing to clear NCAA linemen who do not come off the line nearly as quickly as those in the NFL, and it is also very different when you have to get it to rise rapidly over outstretched arms of guys jumping up and extending in front of you who are as big as 6'9" with long arms and pretty good vertical leaps. If you can accomplish that, there is always a place for you on a team in the pros. Witness the length of the careers of some of the old time kickers. You really do not have to be a big guy, a strong guy, a fast guy, or anything else. They pretty much just need you to do that and then go sit down with a towel over your head. I am 100% sure that almost every pro team has sent at least one scout to see him, time him to the kick, measure his elevation, and they have a complete book on him. It will not take long after graduation to know if he will be sought after. He will either be signed rapidly(and playing shortly after) or they will have seen something that they feel would not make him NFL worthy.

I couldn't agree more. Under the current coaching regime I can see no reason why we couldn't get back to breaking the .500 season record barrier by at least a couple of games, finishing the season parked firmly in 4th or 5th place in the ECAC standings, stumbling into the NCAA tournament as the second to lowest seed, and getting thumped by a Minnesota or Wisconsin once again! Memories........

Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

That's describing their best year in many. If anyone is saying they are going to get back to where they were in the Mid 80's, they are delusional. Occasional 20 wins seasons, maybe a trip to the ECAC's 2 or 3 times a decade and that berth to the NCAA's that should come along with a top 3 or 4 finish is a more reasonable expectation.

I don't see us facing Wisconsin in the tournament this year :D

Also, we were 7 games over .500 in the last NCAA tourney year (8 over before the game against NoDak), and tied for fourth in the ECAC (It just occurred to me that a point in the Hicks/Union screw job, or the Kotyra/Cornell one for that matter, would have gotten us the bye...). I'm not going to excuse the loss to Colgate in the ECAC tournament, but you realize that before that we were looking at a #3 seed in the NCAAs, right? We "stumbled in" because of some critical OOC wins.
Would you be upset with a 19-10-5 regular season, not just this year (would require going 14-3-4 from here in), but any year?

There was an injury to Jason in the first period. It was a lower body injury. I don’t think it is dramatically serious but serious enough after conferring with our trainers we decided to take him out. It is late november, it is a non-conference game and we didn’t want to risk putting him back him and further injuring him, where he would be out longer. We thought it better to go with Scotty, who is also an excellent goalie.”.... http://blog.collegehockeynews.com/2...ld-lead-rpi-to-2-1-non-conference-win-at-unh/

Good to hear that he did not reinjure his shoulder.
