At some point you transition from a contrarian to an idiot. I suggest that this happened about a week ago on this issue.
I am by no means any sort of authority on football kicking. But it appears to me that he has about the liveliest leg and incredible consistency. From what i see of the pros though, the single most important thing to look for is how fast he can get to the ball after it is snapped, and how quickly he can elevate the ball for a distance kick. it is one thing to clear NCAA linemen who do not come off the line nearly as quickly as those in the NFL, and it is also very different when you have to get it to rise rapidly over outstretched arms of guys jumping up and extending in front of you who are as big as 6'9" with long arms and pretty good vertical leaps. If you can accomplish that, there is always a place for you on a team in the pros. Witness the length of the careers of some of the old time kickers. You really do not have to be a big guy, a strong guy, a fast guy, or anything else. They pretty much just need you to do that and then go sit down with a towel over your head. I am 100% sure that almost every pro team has sent at least one scout to see him, time him to the kick, measure his elevation, and they have a complete book on him. It will not take long after graduation to know if he will be sought after. He will either be signed rapidly(and playing shortly after) or they will have seen something that they feel would not make him NFL worthy.Dr. D, that's true, I did leave out the fact that Franks came up short on a field goal attempt in the fourth quarter. I also left out the fact that he missed one in the first quarter. Both of the kicks were from distances that we have come to consider as being within his range.
There's an article in the current Sports Illustrated about last year's Auburn-Alabama game, which Auburn won by returning a short field goal attempt for a TD on the last play of the game. The article spends some time focusing on the regular Alabama kicker, Cade Foster, who entered the game in some discomfort from tendinitis in his left leg, which made it hurt to plant his foot. Foster converted all four extra points during the game but failed on three field goal attempts.
After the game, there were death threats on Foster's Twitter account and the Tuscaloosa police department saw fit to station a policeman outside his apartment. They take their football seriously down in Dixie.
Maybe, as has been suggested, Andrew Franks, like Cade Foster, was suffering from a nagging injury. Then again, maybe it was just a matter of the wind being against him. Or maybe he just had a bad game.
Doesn't change the fact that, as you said, he's been the best kicker RPI's ever had. All RPI football fans owe him thanks for a great four years.
