Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

Well we got no (zero, nada, zilch) votes in the latest poll. And although very early to be used as an indicator, Notre Dame is right there with us in the pairwise so perhaps they aren't the team that the preseason polls indicated they were. Our Great Recruiter appears to have failed to find players that can put the biscuit in the basket. If we can't score vs. Bentley this portends a disastrous season.
Scoring (lack of) has been an ongoing problem.....for this coaching staff. Zero, nada, zilch offensive schemes.

Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

I received the letter, which was dated "August 2014." Not sure exactly when I received it, but if it wasn't in August, it was probably early September.

Thanks. I guess they don't want my money this year.

And yet, some think we're going to get in the top 4 off of 0-0 ties (i.e. having a certain goaltender). Won't happen. The colonel is driving the hockey programs into the ground allowing these two coaches with no offense to speak of whatsoever continue at this establishment.

Well, the Colonel did work for the Department of Defense. :D

I don't know the answer to our offensive problems, but it is not recruiting.
Pirri, D'Amigo, Haggerty, and Zalewski prove that we can recruit offensive talent.
Laliberte is the biggest bust, but Neal is a good offensive player, and Liljegren has already looked like the best forward to come to RPI since Pirri (my opinion).
I won't judge this team on four games, Lets see what they do now that they are back east.

Pretty much agree, as usual. We have had quite a bit of offensive talent in the past few years but it is no coincidence that most of them have just never gotten better with each year. I would not write off JL at all-he had been hurt for a considerable time and he has had to fit into an offensive system that may not fit him. His game is just not the type that does well with the perimeter pass and pass and pass and take an outside shot. One job of the coaches is to take each boy's particular set of talents and make use of them properly, expand upon them, and match them with players that take full advantage of them. I am beginning to think that if we had the talent level of 1984-1985 right now at HFH, that we would still be talking about the potential to score as opposed to them filling the net. If memory serves, RPI, Union and Yale all had major coaching changes at about the same time years ago. Two teams have since won national championships and have become yearly powers in the league and the nation.

Just curious but have you seen Liljegren play in any games other than the PEI one? I just trying to understand how you can make this judgement so quickly. Is he that good and it's that obvious?

As far as offense goes, I think Seth tries to out skate the other teams and win with speed. The problem is every team is fast and you cannot skate like maniacs for a full 60. It's likely other coaches realize this and play a little bit of a rope-a-dope in the 1st period. Just protect the house, keep them to the perimeter. Then they turn it on in the 2nd and 3rd. This may explain why we are always flailing in the 2nd period.

Now this years team is somewhat offensively challenged to be fair. The Frosh will take a while to adjust (sadly, we don't have our very own Jack Eichel). For now, we might need to play a little more of a dump and chase game and get out chances off of counters to turnovers and good breakout passes after saves. I've always believed in starting at an even pace and getting better as the game goes one (and season). I'm not sure that Seth's game management allows for this.

How long do you think, until the patience runs out with Appert? It´s his 9th season at the helm and not much to show for it (no offense). You got rid of Dan Fridgen for much less.

I have seen all five games on tv. After his performance against PEI, I started concentrating on him whenever he was on the ice. He is moving all the time and in the right place at the right time. And he is the only forward on this team that I can say that about. He has a good shot and isn't afraid to go to the "dirty" areas.
Doc, as for JL. He has just passed up too many open shots over the last three plus seasons to think that it is the system that is holding him back. He came in with big numbers, and has shown his skating talent, but has not produced the kind of offense that we all expected. He did it again this past weekend, when he had an open shot from the middle of the left circle and passed to a teammate that was double covered. Not even a shot on goal.

Great post doc. How can all of this talent show up here, and then leave so quickly (for questionably greener pastures), with so little to show for it....?

OK, so we can recruit it. Why did they all leave after 1-3 years, especially considering one of the four ended up spending time in Major Junior?

Maybe one of these days, some of these wackos *coughfishy* will open up their eyes.

My own opinion is that JL needs some sort of finisher on the ice with him(something we only have had a few times) to pose some sort of threat to the defense. There has to be that threat to open up the ice a bit and move those big bad defensemen off him. He needs a Haggerty or Polacek shooter out there and normally he is not paired with that type of player (except on the power play and even then he had played the point at times instead of being up front). I am not disagreeing, just sticking to my guns that it is the job of the coaches to find the right match, mix , chemistry and come up with schemes to take advantage of what each fellow brings to the table. Rarely do we get guys with the entire package-it would be nice to have a year with a Tapper, Murley, Cavosie line on the ice but we have just not had that kind of mix in a long time.
I know it is so early in the season(but we say that every year) but we just come out fast in the first period, then teams adjust quickly to us, and we just demonstrate so much offensive confusion. We have better than good goaltending, the makings of a really solid defense, and from what i have seen so far, just an ineffective offense(that has enough talent to be much better). Each year i keep telling myself-we have enough talent for better results.

Just hard to fathom how we can have so many boys from the past 10 years get either a quick look at the NHL or a more prolonged stay in the AHL and even more in the lower pro leagues and Europe-and we cannot even get to the final four of the ECAC???

Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

I still maintain every one of the guys who left early, did themselves a huge disservice by not hanging around at least 1 more year...
