Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015: Dedicated to Rich Curadi
It's one thing to notice areas that need improvement and to discuss them in a rational manner
Its the lack of effort and organization that is concerning.
Yes. That is one area that definitely needs substantial improvement. You cannot be wandering around on the ice indecisively gazing about wondering what to do while someone else zips past. totally agree on that score. There is a big difference between having the other team beat us and having us not even appear to try.
at the same time, whenever any athlete moves from one level of competition to another, there is inevitably a period of adjustment. There are times when you can coast at a lower level of play and perhaps unconsciously a player can develop some bad habits that need to be weeded out to be successful at the next level.
everyone is bigger, stronger, smarter, and faster at the next level when at the prior level only the very best were. just like physical exercise is needed to get stronger and develop skills, mental exercise is also needed to develop alertness and stamina when the body gets tired.
In basketball, the best coaches will force players to shoot free throws when they are physically fatigued, because it takes greater mental strength to force yourself to perform the basic fundamentals when your body is tired. concentration and focus to give that extra push to work through the fatigue and perform the motion properly anyway.
I'm not as concerned as most of the others here seem to be, while it is frustrating, we have talent and skill, now we need to harness the mental discipline it takes to use it every shift of every period of every game. my surmise is that it will develop over time.
that's where I think we need a deeper support staff, so that the coaches are on top of the players in practice as soon as they notice them getting the slightest bit sloppy. that is mental weariness manifesting itself and that's where the coaching really needs to focus. IMHO.
