Perhaps only because they got the interest first.

I wouldn't consider myself a gamer by any means (heck I've never owned a conventional video game system), but I do remember cycling around the TV channels when I was young and seeing Molson Hockey Night in Canada.

I am probably not the one to judge since jen and i have only been to the HFH 4 times in the past 8+ years. But, it would seem that just winning will not increase attendance much. Sure the townie side might get a little more crowded. But the student body make up has changed drastically from what we saw in the 70's-the 90's. Walking around campus, there is an entirely different atmosphere and feel. Hockey was always a big deal and you could feel it build as you reached the latter part of the week and especially, of course, for Fridays and Saturdays. Not exactly sure what it is, perhaps the larger percentage of foreign students or the much larger percentage of female students, but there is no doubt a change. The more recent influence however may well just be the great job WRPI audio does and RPI TV does so that following the team over the internet is darn convenient. Part of me understands this fully. But part of me remembers the fun and excitement of live RPI hockey. And let's face it, Troy just does not offer a wealth of things to do on the weekends. Unless we not only win, but become nationally prominent, I just do not see attendance rising to packed house levels. Be that as it may, those who do attend are just as vocal and just as loyal as fans have ever been and hopefully they will be rewarded with many more weekends like we just saw.
There are just more things for students to do now then when we were in Troy, both for students and for locals. I don't think the presence of foreign students has much to do with it. I had never been to a hockey game before I entered RPI and never paid any attention to the sport either. It just has to become the thing to do on weekends again. I don't know if that can happen.

BTW, since lugnut graduated in 2013 and RKarger last spring (I think), there have been sadly, to the best of my knowledge, no students posting here.

I guess that I am showing my ignorance again, but do you call the YouTube videos which you have linked showing you in a contest which seemed to amount to you trying to kill your opponent's characters before your opponent shot yours?

You definitely have a point, as I do see in Section 33 a few folks around my age, that or thereabout (rvd5star69 comes to mind). Winning will definitely bring people in, heck the ticket sales increase for the 2010-11 season should explain that. Winning will also bring in the TV cameras, although TWCS seems content with RPI-TV's content and simulcasts that. When I took FlagDUDETTE's nephew to a game, I found out that the price for a youth ticket was $9 (and it wasn't even a prestige-priced game). As much as I can understand the need to generate revenue, I have to wonder if that plays a factor into not seeing as many kids lined up along the tunnel wanting a high-five from one of the players. Let's face it, youth is the reason that attendance will shoot up, and they not only gravitate with winning teams, but parents will gravitate to something that is economical.

One game does not a gamer make. ;)

Compared to the prices that are charged by many other schools, RPI's prices are still dirt cheap. There is more or less annually a thread hear where fans of various teams stated the prices which they pay, and that is the impression which I always come away with. I do agree that it is important for the long term success to attract local kids, but not looking at the future implications of what is done now is a general problem in this country (but lets not go there :) ).

Maybe I'm wrong because I'm not glued to the two major college hockey websites all weekend long, but did anyone else thinks that the RPI sweep of Union was underplayed by college Hockey News and USCHO?

The defending national champion, and current #2 team in the country was swept and outscored 8-2 by a team with a 1-5 record entering the weekend and the series was not the lead in any of either site's round-up either day. The leads were big stories both days but by Saturday night, for my money, the RPI sweep was the top story simply because it was so stunning. Let's hope the boys can keep it going and storm their way into the national spotlight.
LGR!

I agree that it was underplayed, but in a large part it is still due to still downplaying the ECAC.

As fun and great as it was for us, we're still an under-.500 team that lost a pair to Bentley. By KRACH (with the early season hypothetical tie), we're 31st and just below "average", so we probably don't deserve any votes yet.

"Deserve" and "get" are not necessarily the same. :) We do now have a 3-3 record vs. teams in the Top 20. Make that Top 15.

Agreed. It will take a coupe of wins this weekend or 4 of the next six before you can hope to get some love in the poll. I still think this team will be erractic for a little bit. Most of the scoring is coming from younger guys and they need time to develp consistency at this level. Having said that, i still think this team can be pretty good in February and March.

who cares about the polls? I'd like to see another weekend of passion and effort and results. The polls will happen. LGR!

Absolutely! OGC like to talk about 'following process' week by week. I don't care if the polls and media 'sleep on us' for awhile. Finding our identity and playing to those strengths consistently is where we need to be at this point in the season. Polls? Meaningless distraction now.

Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

It’s obviously very early in the season, but I’ve gotten my season simulator fired up to see what KRACH says the final standings will be. I update every Sunday based on the week's games. Come have a look in the thread!

Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

Too bad they did away with that comparison a little while back.

Well, sort of. The explicit "Record vs. TUC" comparison is gone, but the quality win bonus does something similar while eliminating the volatility of rankings that arose from the TUC cliff.
