RPI Engineers 24-25

I agree about the head injury, but even before that what I noticed is , defensively, she just basically stood in front of the net. The other team skating around and Trnkova just standing there not covering anyone. Then when she came to the bench for a change her head was down, she looked out of breath, and not at all engaged with her teammates like the other players are. Something is definitely wrong.

I thought the best defensive player all weekend was Helgeson. Too bad she is a grad student and is only here this year. She is fun to watch.

I have really appreciated the play of Helgeson all season. I agree that it is a shame we only have her for one season. We did try to recruit her 4 years ago but she wisely chose to stay with Wisconsin. I remember saving a picture of both her and her sister Kate back about 5 years ago thinking how great it would be to add those high quality recruits in the program. I saved that picture for obvious reasons, but Jenny ran across it on my computer and mistakenly deleted it!(or so she says) Helgeson is a very good stay at home defensive defense player who makes some extremely smart accurate passes. If we had another like her on the team and of course a second Trnkova, this team would be much more of a top tier program.

Went to the Mayor’s Cup games yesterday. Very fun games to watch. The women showed lots of grit and determination and almost pulled it off. But once again, I was happy to be there.

But what I didn’t like about the game was the Union coach. Yes there were officiating errors. But I didn’t see it as biased toward one team. More of a situation where young officials were trying their best and were human. The referees even corrected some of the mistakes they caught. But what I saw is a coach who appears to be of the Ric Bennett school of coaching. A guy who has spent a lot of time watching reruns of Jim Schoenfeld.

Imagine if the situation were reversed and the officials yelled at the Union coach and said “Hey, why don’t you teach these players how to clear out the front of the net without taking penalties “ or “Cant you get these players to thrown the pick deep into the offensive zone”or something like that. Constantly critiquing the refs loudly for all to hear was very juvenile. It really detracted from the experience.
