RPI Engineers '23-'24

I don't remember, but is this the first time that RPI got a vote in the poll? https://www.uscho.com/rankings/d-i-womens-poll/. It only puts us at tied for #21, which is also about where we are in the pairwise, but that puts us in about the middle of the pack for all D1 teams. Still a huge gap to the top 7 in ECAC, 'though, which is probably about right.

RPI and Colgate tied 2-2 after two periods. Is it a good game? Probably, but who knows...I cant get the video feed!!! Stretch Internet is so unreliable. I can see other games but not this one. We had much better reliability when the games were covered by RPI TV.

Colgate out shooting us by a fairly wide margin. First period ended 1-0 Colgate but we were really out played. Second period started the same way and Colgate went up 2-0. But we truly outplayed them the second half of the period and scored twice and could have had one or two more. Very exciting game to watch and for me very surprising. This Colgate team seems to have no weaknesses - great goal tending, very strong defense and exceptional speed and stick handling up front. not sure if we can keep up what we have been able to do for the final 20 minutes but this RPI team is for real and the freshman class has added a level of play that I doubt most have expected.
We probably will not be able to see the final period as we are in a pub that gets ESPN+ but is rapidly filling up with folks who have no desire to watch girl's hockey but at least we got to see 40 minutes and i was able to enjoy a couple vodka gimlets!! Go red!!!

thx for the commentary Dr. D! I am so frustrated not being able to watch the game. Engineers now down 4-3 half way through the 3rd and I feel like I am missing a great game. AARRGGHHH!.

You did - Colgate went up 3-2 on a perfect power play goal -Rampado had zero chance on a close in tip. The girls tied it and it stayed 3-3 until some close in play in front of Rampado when she tried to freeze the puck and no whistle was blown and Colgate eventually pushed it in. Rampado pulled with 2 minutes left (would have been earlier but we had to fight off a badly called penalty for roughing in front of our own net with 4 minutes left). With the extra skater we put incredible pressure on Osborne but she made several tough saves and we kept the puck in the zone the entire time. Had a couple chances to tie it up but just could not get that last goal.
Overall showed that RPI belongs in the conversation in the ECAC. Colgate left with the win but this one honestly they were pushed pretty hard.

What is going on with the Stretch Internet international video feed??? For the second day in a row I can see every one of their listed ECAC game, EXCEPT the RPI games!

After 2 periods Cornell leads 1-0. The game is more one sided than the score and if not for Rampado this one would be much different. She made one save in particular that simply cannot be described. Cornell is not as big and perhaps not as talented overall as Colgate but they are very fast and very organized and we have been prevented from completed more than one pass at a time and most of the activity has been kept in our defensive zone. Yet we are still in this one and the next goal will be the story.

Cornell made it 2-0 and had complete control. RPI pulled Rampado with almost 5 minutes left and kept the puck in the offensive zone for a long stretch and got an extra attacker goal to make it 2-1 which was the final score. Although a close score, for me this one was almost never in doubt. Cornell seemed much faster getting to pucks and they seemed to win virtually every puck battle along the boards. We are a competitive ECAC team but this weekend shows we have a way to go to play with the top rated teams.

Two tough one goal losses against nationally ranked teams with better talent but this team is more skilled than we've seen in recent years and they don't give up. It will permit them to be competitive despite playing in a league with more than its share of the nation's best. I was pleased to see that both game were played in front of significant and enthusiastic crowds. This team deserves that much.

Watched the replay of the Clarkson-RPI game on ESPN+. Best RPI team I have seen in years. If not for some tremendous stops by Pasiechnyk early on, RPI could have been up 3-0 and it might have been a totally different game. Even thou RPI was outshot 44-20 I thought they had more grade A chances than Clarkson.

Interesting comment. I agree that this RPI team is the best in many years and able to compete against just about anyone. However, I came away incredibly impressed with Clarkson. Although the Engineers looked very competitive for the first half of the game, I thought that in the last half of the game the Engineers looked completely smothered by Clarkson, and that is the first time this year that has happened to them.

Wasn't able to watch either game this weekend...something is really messed up in the international feed for Ive League home games. Frustrating, but even more frustrating is the recent lack of progress for the Engineers. A road trip to Brown and Yale should have been more productive than this. The coaches talk about the team improving by 1% per game, but that is not a formula for success if teams like Brown are improving by 10% per game.

The Brown game could have, should have and would have been at least tied and went to OT or perhaps even a victory. They had Brown down a goal and simply gave up 2 bad goals to tie and lose. They deserved a better fate but all credit to Brown who simply did not quit.
Today, the 4-1 score is not the best representation of the game. Yale is quite good but this was a one goal game until RPI seemed to run out of gas. They just got slow on their skates and also started losing every puck battle along the boards. They are not as good a team as Yale but perhaps an equal to Brown. They have their weaknesses. They give away far too many pucks in their own zone and have great difficulty in clearing out of the defensive zone getting hemmed in for minutes at a time due to weak passes and weak clearing attempts. But they have a top notch goalie who saves them time and time again. There are players who simply need to be out there every game - 29, 7, 91, 89. But there seems to be a need to rotate in others to try to achieve some better chemistry and flow. Not exactly sure why but some of the girls just have not been getting much ice time in the past few games - ?injuries perhaps. But some changes need to be made by the coaching staff as i believe this team is much better than they have shown over the last 6 game losing streak.

Yes, the RPI-Yale game was pretty close at several junctures, especially at the start of the game and after RPI made it 2-1 in the 2nd period. RPI is disciplined and has a good compete level. I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get to watch, hab. For my part I was pleased that, after yesterday, Yale played a fair amount better today.

The team, especially the top lines, are clearly worn out. DrDemento - I think the reason why 29,7,91,89 and throw in 10 and 17 as well are not out all the time is production has fallen off a cliff. Taking a quick look at the shots from yesterday and today 29: 1/0, 7: 1/1 (a goal vrs brown), 91: 3/1, 89: 5/2 (defense), 10: 1/2 and 17: 2/3 (goal). Compare that to players who don't play that much 23: 2/4 8: 1/2, 12: 0/1, 14: 1/0 and then a handful of 0/0. When the top lines who are on the ice more and getting power play time are getting about the same number of shots as the 4th line / extra skaters says the players are beaten down. I am not sure what the staff can do other than try to rest them a bit more so they have the energy to produce.

Interest point and i entirely agree. it was the problem last year also. We seem to be a 50 minute team for many games. Fresh legs are key and when they shorten the bench, it does not seem to matter if the shifts get shorter, they just do not have the energy. They get worn down for some if not most of the third period and it appear fairly obvious. But I must say, they are a very exciting team to watch this year and there is a lot of potential out there. And there is a deeper bench that can be called upon that simply has not been getting enough of a look.

Looking at things half-full, you could say that the 3rd/4th lines have near-similar talent as the top lines which is why SOG are "fairly equal" and if so, does give the staff options on how to properly rest. A few years back when they beat BU and Providence and looked very promising the line-usage was much more balanced since it was a near-fresh roster coming off covid and the 0-fer season. For whatever reason, even though I think it is clear there is not as much of a talent gap between the "top" and "bottom" lines, the past two years the line usage has been as if there was a clear difference in talent which is not the case. The win-loss record is gonig the wrong way with clearly more talent on the roster. This team will win only with high energy, effort and grit and that requires balanced usage of players. As a once famous coach said "You don't have enough talent to win on talent alone" I think applies very strongly with this program

They have 3 weeks now to get the ship straightened out. Hopefully that will be 3 weeks of high quality, intense practices
