Only saw about 1/2 of tonight's game. Not good to lose to RMU but I'm not concerned based on what I saw. The team skated well and moved the puck well, if not quite as convincingly as in the last two weekends. A few occasions where it seemed that players tried to do a bit too much on their own rather than having confidence in their teammates, and the defence is still caught out of position too often. In some ways tonight's game reminded me of the RPI team of 2 years ago which controlled play in a lot of games that they lost. But I do think that this team has a better ability to finish, so I am still quite optimistic. Exciting team to watch.

3 tough ECAC weekends coming up before they get a bit of a break with an exhibition road game to McGill. Predictions anyone? If they continue to have scoring struggles they could easily go 0-6-0 before the trip to McGill.

Watched the Engineers for the first time this season on Friday. I personally think the team is stronger than last year, and the freshmen class looks good. Hansen and Selander will probably have the biggest impact as well as Schwalbe.

The biggest concern I have is special teams. The penalty kill looked very passive at times, and RMU had a lot of time and space with the puck. Admittedly, they moved the puck well, but I would've liked to see a bit more jump when there was a rebound or a RMU player wobbled the puck. The power play looked okay at times, zone entries were rather good. Have to improve on face-offs though. The first unit was a lot better than the second, the second unit looked a bit disorganized and there was very little movement.

Overall I think last weekend was quite promising, a lot better than the end of last year. Three tough weekends coming up, two of which away. I'm predicting four points, but 2 points is an absolute minimum. I think this team can beat both SLU and Harvard. Excited to watch the games against Darmouth&Harvard live, hopefully I get to catch some of the games against SLU & Clarkson as well through RPITV.

Looked like they really need to get traffic to the net. Many shots were just the shooter alone sometimes with a trailer.

Could also work a little better to clear the space in front of their own net.

Agree completely, and that is why this team reminds me so much of the team from 2 years ago. I said about that team that they lost a lot of games where they controlled almost the entire ice surface :)...except the space in front of both nets :(.

One of the most fundamental principles of hockey is having a consistent net presence at the offensive end and trying to clear that same space at the defensive end of the ice. Considering the head coach is a former goalie you'd think he'd know and understand how simple and critical this is and that he'd make it a big point of emphasis with his team. Come on John, take care of this! This is becoming an embarrassment.

Looking forward to the team's first ECAC road trip of the season, against Cornell and Colgate. This will be a tough test, and will tell us a lot about the Engineers 2015-16. Cornell and Colgate are better than average teams (as reflected in the various polls and rating systems): Cornell probably not as strong as in recent years and Colgate much improved. A road win against either team would be an upset and a real boost for RPI, and would send our resident pessimist (Shelfit) into a fit.

I guess you can't read. I have said many times I'd love to see them start winning more games but it doesn't happen and there are many reasons for that - mostly leadership related - as others have also posted. I'm more of a realist that doesn't see things through rose colored glasses and have practically given up on the potential for improvement here.

Changing topics - so turk181 posted that they've hired a new assistant coach even though the job was never posted anywhere. Aren't there NCAA rules about how jobs have to be posted or else it can be interpreted as poaching from another NCAA school or is that only for head coaches? Does anyone know if there are rules about this? The posting says the AD made the announcement. Wouldn't the head coach usually make the announcement of a new assistant coach? Not being pessimistic here hab. I'm genuinely asking for info. :)

Nice overtime win over Cornell today to begin conference play. First goal (5 on 3) was a smart play by Hansen who could have shot from the slot but saw Gruschow open at the side of the net and fed her the puck. Overtime goal was good effort by Tomlinson stealing the puck behind the Cornell net and quickly feeding a backhand to Wash in front who one-timed it into the net. Selander solid in net and so was the Cornell goalie. Very even game, could have gone either way, but that W sure is a nice way to start the conference. On to Colgate tomorrow, who tied Union 2-2 today.

Noticed that Renn was not dressed for the game. Anyone know if there is an injury?

Nice 3 point weekend for the Engineers as they pick up a 3-3 tie against Colgate today. Rooney with 2 goals, both by parking herself in front of the net :), the first a deflection on a shot from the point, the second on a nice feed from behind the net by Mankey.

I have to say that the team was incredibly sloppy coming out of their own end of the ice today (resulted in all three Colgate goals and there could have been more given the number of times we coughed up the puck inside our own blue line). With Renn out of the lineup Burke went with 4 D for most of the weekend and that is going to be a problem if it continues because they looked exhausted by the end of today's game. Actually the whole team looked tired...not surprising given how hard they worked yesterday for the win against Cornell, and given how much today's refs allowed both teams to play a very physical game.

Still, three points on a weekend where normally we might get two is a very good thing. Hopefully our women bring the same intensity next game.

Thanks Lugnut, as a stats geek myself I enjoy seeing these things. However, I also watch all of the RPI games and try to follow the other conference teams as closely as I can and there are always a few other things that need to be factored in. Generally, from what I have seen so far I would rate RPI's chances of making the playoffs at least 50%, and I wouldn't have said that before the season started. Second, at this time of year the Ivy teams are always under-rated by the stats because they are slow to begin their competitive season. Cornell will be better than what they have shown so far, and so will Harvard.

Yeah, I wouldn't trust these to be particularly accurate until the December, but they're fun to post.
