RPI@Dartmouth 2/13/16

Re: RPI@Dartmouth 2/13/16

How about this: Still fighting for a home ice bye, Still fighting for an NCAA berth, a better OOC record than they've had in years as well as one of the most talented teams they've had In years. I look at the reality of the situation too, and the reality is that this team has battled through injury, early defections, they have battled back from three goals down and won. Sure, they had their fair share of leads lost in the third period, but since you like to look at "reality," the reality is there have been a lot more positives than negatives, but reading some posts from you and your ilk, you'd think they'd haven't won a game in ten years.

You sound as if we have a reasonable chance for a home ice bye or an NCAA berth. The former is about 16% per my model, Lugnut can provide you a better number in a day or so. As for an NCAA berth, that would be no better than 5% at this point. I can hardly believe that these numbers are any better than your low pre-season expectations. Every team has injuries, defections, suspensions, etc. But some of those teams win every now and then. Despite the two wins, the last six games have been horrible. Easily we could have lost all six. If this team according to you was trying 100% of the time then that speaks volumes about their talent level. But to answer your question we have won 128 games in the last 10 seasons, 128-175-43 (346 games a big enough sample size?). So that there is no misinterpretation - my rancor is not directed at the boys. We need new leadership to make RPI Hockey great again.

Outside of a few small disagreements, we seem to be on exactly the same page. I am not a statistician or mathematician. But 10 years is more than enough time to get a representation of the program. Pick any ten year period you want. It is not the recruits coming in, it is not the boys, it is not the injuries, it is not the bad bounces, and it is not the constant having to play against the hot goaltender. Every goaltender seems to be hot against us in the third period and in any playoff games that we are fortunate enough to play. I think that over the past decade we have had as much talent or as little as any ten year period in RPI history. And what is more telling is compare our last ten years to two other ECAC teams that changed coaches around the same time as we did. Yale and Union are a very fair comparison and I think anyone here would trade our record for theirs over that time period. Perhaps it takes a longer term perspective to really see the difference in this program and guys like me, DeepRed, and Ralph have a somewhat different set of expectations as we have seen far more years of the program.
