Combo of all of the above. No paying for the extra hotel night. As a broadcaster, I appreciate the afternoon games. Depending on where the games are, if I decide to go to one I can be home before midnight most trips.

I think it's more for the student athletes to get them back to campus at a decent hour.
I agree pretty much. Jenny and I would just sneak in some Van Gogh Dutch Caramel Vodka and some pastries from Bella Napoli anyway. For the later games ate at Verdiles before stopping at the bakery. Used to make sure we had enough to share with our section and row (only the pastry of course!)
I guess, but Union's Saturday schedule is all over the place. They play Saturday against RPI (it's 15 miles!), Colgate, Princeton, Ohio State and Harvard at 5, but others like Providence, Bentley, Clarkson and Brown are at 7. To make it a real jumble, the Mayor's Cup game is at 6. Then again, we had an odd mix of 4:00, 6:00 and 7:00 Saturday home games last season. I almost wonder if they give the visitors a choice between early (get on the road quicker) or regular (greater rest and recovery time with a normal evening faceoff).

I think you're right on the confluence of reasons. I also like the growing move to Saturday afternoon as I like to eat dinner after the games and there are fewer and fewer places open after 9pm these days. It will also be easier to convince my wife to come along if we can eat somewhere other than the Recovery Room after the game.

If memory serves, for the second half of the year the Sat. games reverted back to evening puck drops...so the whole student athlete reasoning doesn't fly. I am not a fan of the earlier Sat drops and was peeved that they did so without telling the season ticket holders (....why would you ? ...add it to the list of insults.... ha ha)

I might have to make the 70 mile drive to Tate Rink to see my first exhibition game in at least 15 years. I used to enjoy them back in the days when they were against Canadian colleges because it was the first (and often only) chance to see all the newcomers together. That is, if they could fit them all on the benches. This year's crop has me more interested than I've been since the early days of Seth's tenure when we felt similar vibes.

Looking at the fall sports schedule, I see that RPI has six home football games scheduled. If you like early starts, you'll like this schedule - all six of them are scheduled to start at 12:00 noon.
I also glanced at the women's field hockey schedule, which lists them as playing at Hamilton in "Colgate, NY." Guess somebody with an ice hockey mindset figured that if Colgate University is located in Hamilton, NY, it only seemed logical that Hamilton College must be located in Colgate, NY.

Being someone who will drive to some away games (Field Hockey does not make the cut) that are within an hour or so from my home, I have gotten used to checking a second source whenever something looks remotely odd or suspect on our site. Leaving the garage is not even an option these days unless more than one web site is in complete agreement.
It was not always that way. In fact, at one time whenever there was conflicting information it was our site that was considered the gold standard. Unfortunately, the individuals responsible for the level of confidence in our site that would have you jump in a car and drive without even thinking about checking a second source are now all working elsewhere.
Good idea to double check before leaving. I remember 30 years or so ago (before the ubiquitous Internet) when I lived in MA and UMass-Lowell had a football team we played them on the road. I went to the campus and asked how to find the football field. I must have asked a dozen people before I found one that knew it was about 5 miles away in a neighboring town. I got there about 15 minutes into the game. Not many people there and UM-L dropped FB a few years later.

In my student days, which date back to before the ubiquitous Internet and even before the ubiquitous cell phone, I was the statistician for RPI's basketball team.
One year, we were scheduled to play Drew University in Madison, NJ. Our schedule said the game was to begin at 2 PM, so we boarded the bus and left Troy that morning to be sure we could get to our destination in time for the game.
We sure did. We got there in time for a 2 PM game, only to discover that there had been a slight misunderstanding about the game time. Drew's schedule called for the game to start at 8 PM.
Drew tried to be as gracious hosts as they could. They gave us something to eat and found a lounge where we could sit around and while away the hours until game time.
But when game time finally arrived, whatever mental edge our guys might have had with them at 2 PM had completely vanished, and we lost to a very bad Drew team.
Drew repaid the visit the next season. They were accompanied by their cheerleading squad, who I guess were inspired by the thought that this might actually be a winnable game for them.
Their team was even worse than they had been the previous year. We beat them by 70 points. But they may have derived some consolation from the fact that their cheerleaders were the best-looking set of cheerleaders I ever saw at an RPI game.
