RPI 2023 Off-season: We March Fourth Into the Off-season

Today is 17 July 2023. There are 82 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 7 October 2023 for the start of next season.

Times-Union ran an article over the weekend detailing new NY Legislation signed into law that clears the way for robust NIL activity in New York...preventing NCAA from meddling in NIL deals... Mentions Siena (M & W basketball and UAlbany lacrosse as NIL active...)

"...On June 30, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a bill that prevents the NCAA, or any other organization with authority over college athletics, from entertaining a complaint, opening an investigation or taking any other adverse action against a college for involvement in an athlete’s name, image or likeness. While it doesn’t allow pay for play, it strengthens the NIL law that New York passed last year.

Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy, who co-sponsored the bill, explained Syracuse University, a high-major Division I school, lobbied hard for the legislation and Syracuse-area legislators backed it..."

Is that a good thing? While it allegedly "doesn't allow pay for play", I'd love to know how since it bars any authority from taking action. The big problem is that NIL was not supposed to be a recruiting tool but a toothless NCAA quickly let it become so. There have been quarterbacks that changed their commitments over 7 figure NIL "offers." Rand Pecknold claimed he lost a recruit to a 6 figure offer from another school. Such offers have nothing to do with the actual marketing value of the NIL for a teenage kid, but rather are simple booster payoffs. Fortunately, the primary target sports for out of control boosters are football and basketball so I don't think any of that is the norm for hockey yet. When it is........

No doubt it is a mess...which as you mentioned the NCAA allowed to happen. I suspect the feds will step in at some point....for better or for worse...

Has anyone heard whether RPI is conducting a search for a new Athletic Director or do we think they will promoite from within (KB) ? I have seen nothing publicly posted on the usual sites about the opening.

Thanks for that. Parker Executive Search (Atlanta) listed as the agency working for RPI for A.D. search. They have an extensive higher education and athletic director client search portfolio. Given the posting appears to only be three weeks old, I'd guess it will be fairly deep into the fall semester before they announce a hire.

EDIT: Closing dates for RPI applications is 7/21/23. Also, Parker is handling Colgate's A.D. search....

No salary range is posted . . . are these types of roles exempt from the newer NY laws requiring that information to be a part of a job posting?
