RPI 2023-24 (Part II): The Search for Special Teams Excellence

I'm not sure if that is good news or bad news for me. If they played Friday, I would not have been able to watch the game. But I will be watching on Saturday.
Who knows, maybe they will surprise us.

We also have a mixed reaction to playing Saturday - we were given tickets to MSG for the Rangers/Blues game. These are seats directly behind the Ranger bench so there is virtually no way we want to miss out on this one. Wishing our boys the best against CCT!!

Smith needs to be fired. He is terrible. Born and raised in Troy and now residing in the PNW I was jazzed to see that ESPN+ would be showing ECAC and Hockey East games. But watching RPI was tough this year. Just seeing the fieldhouse brought back memories - I spent a good deal of my childhood there. I grew up adoring those guys........Watson, Scammel and Law - were my gym teachers in 6th grade. Watson actually helped me sneak into a sold out game wih Clarkson telling the guard I was a nephew. So its hard to watch a team that plays defense like they did this year. There is definitely a talent need but the coaching is the worst. Be nice to see them upset Clarkson though!!!

That's an interesting thought. It doesn't seem likely to me, but what do I know?

Why doesn’t it seem likely Ralph if I may ask. This year has been a disaster to put it mildly. I can’t imagine any head coach would feel comfortable going into another year with a staff that has allowed 4+ goals a game, worst pk in the nation, one of the worst teams in the country. Last I checked RPI is ahead of 9 teams for pairwise. Last place in a pretty weak ecac. Has been average on offense. Outside of 3/4 recruits the pipeline looks weak. If Dave is to keep his job which I believe he should be fired I can’t imagine he rolls with this staff. Nearly coaching malpractice on his part. All successful programs have very good assistants.

RPI gets blown out tomorrow I think it will be talked about more.

The only advantage we have is single elimination. There is no shot we beat them in 3, but if luck is on our side like it was in November, we have a chance in one. That being said, I think everyone knows that it would likely be the biggest upset in the ECAC postseason if RPI wins.

Very true. I certainly hope they pull off the upset but I just don’t see it.

Ken Schott's playoff preview article on the weekend series'. He mentions RPI's "awful season" and whether Smith could be in trouble, which is the first I've seen in writing. It certainly hasn't been mentioned on any TV or sports radio programs.

It's interesting to read that this is the first year we've finished in last since my senior year. Going into that year things weren't very promising and the Poly needed a writer to cover the team. A couple of my friends were on the editorial board and they asked me to sign on and take the assignment starting a few games into the year. I had fun, but it was a truly brutal season. The only good news was the addition of scholarships and and a sense that there was an increasingly bright pipeline of recruits. I remember being in the lobby of the Huntington Hotel in Boston and the coaches were huddled in a corner closing the deal with a prospect. It didn't mean a lot to me at the time (we didn't have Twitter to reveal new recruits or Ralph tracking their every move), but it was John Carter.

Thank you - for reminding me that we have had times in the past when we were able to turn things around quickly. I don't expect a Carter or a Servinis or an Oates coming just yet but at least we can dream a bit.

Thank you for sharing this. John Carter is my *all-time favorite* RPI player! Also a very friendly person around young players at the RPI summer hockey camps.

Just watched a very entertaining game UMass vs. UMaine. Benny's squad took the close win 2-1 and in doing so clinched 3rd place in HE. Benny's postgame (no smiling) comments...."not satisfied...more work to do.... things to clean up in our execution..."

Anyone who thinks that McElroy and company didn't completely botch the HC hire needs to have a psych exam...Sorry, but I can't sugar coat it any more.....I'm out of patience.

Oh a complete botch job. They missed by 5 miles. Dave’s record amounts to being in the loss column about 70% of the time. Imagine being wrong 70% of the time at your job. Completely ridiculous.

Agree with this 110%. It is quite frustrating to have some on this thread go through the tortured logic that Benny might not have been able to translate his success here. Barr has won everywhere, end of story. He would have been 1000% better than what is here now.

Gut feeling.

I do think that there are more than 3 or 4 good recruits in the pipeline, none great, but it matters where one draws the line. OTOH I don't think that any will have the impact next season that Hotson is having this season. Caron and Kyrkostas may on offense.
