What are we going with 11-1 Friday night 6-2 Saturday.
Really looking forward to seeing Cornell Friday night. Currently on 10-0 heater with 11th win coming Friday lol.
Jokes aside Cornell is impressive. I’m rooting for them to make the tournament.
tough weekend ahead

Rooting for Fat Mike will never be an option for me....if they were to play Q'pac I would root for them both to lose. LOL That said, Cornell potted 12 goals last weekend, so yeah it's gonna be a challenge. Ha ha

For what it is worth, you can use this search tool to look up various colleges and universities to see if their hockey coaches make the Form 990. https://nonprofitlight.com/

Would the fact that Smitty is apparently paid through an endowment shield his salary info from this listing --he's not on that list as far as I can see.... ?? I don't know what the NFP disclosure rules are ....

I received an email that RPI football broadcaster Bob Conway passed away on 2/5. :-(

Bob was my work-study boss at RPI and a good friend to all of my family. In fact, I just spoke to him last week and was supposed to see him on Saturday at a memorial dinner for my Dad. Bob was also a huge supporter of RPI athletics. Even after he retired as the head of academic advising, he stayed on part-time running the academic support program for athletes. Every hockey player and coach from the 1980s into the pandemic era knew Bob and many also viewed him as a friend and confidant. RIP Bob.

Good question, but I don't think the endowment shields the income, since the endowment belongs to RPI (despite whatever restrictions are tied to the money). 990s must also capture income paid to employee from "related organizations" so I think the spirit of the rule would lead to a reasonable conclusion that Smith's salary is not above the lowest on the RPI 990--that wouldn't surprise me based on publicly reported salaries of other coaches.

Schafer (apparently AKA Fat Mike) was a player when I was in grad school at Cornell. He was a wild man. I missed the intros for a game against Harvard but all the talk was that he had broken a stick over his head to get the team and crowd fired up. Come to think of it, I never asked if he was wearing his helmet at the time…..

HA HA ...yes, I actually heard Dan Fridgen tell that story ! Schafer had apparently set it up with the equipment mgr. ..who sawed most of the way through the shaft of a stick, so that further brain damage wouldn't occur.... lol.

This is an interesting development, especially with NIL becoming more prevalent. Neither can be good for the smaller schools or singular D1 programs…

It certainly would alter the recruiting landscape considerably. With the top tier programs presumably gaining the best CHL kids who jump to NCAA, small programs like RPI might see some of the "displaced" kids from those programs who want more ice time and a world class degree....

RPI had good stretches of play tonight, but ultimately outplayed by a good Cornell team--Cornell looked pretty sharp to me. Watson superb in the loss. Although RPI gave up too many good scoring chances to Cornell over the course of the game, three of the goals occurred due to basic defensive errors.

RPI's power play continues to be an adventure; I counted 4 breakaways or semi-breakaways surrendered to Cornell while having a man advantage. Watson bailed them out. That has to be getting demoralizing, even though Heidemann snagged a PP goal.

Expecting a tighter contest for the Freakout.

What I saw last night was a well coached Cornell team. I don't think that they have an abundance of talent, but they don't get caught out out of position and they don't make foolish passes in their defensive zone.
They are composed in all areas of the ice and they are very fast.
In other words, all the things that we are not.
It hurts me to say that, but it was so obvious watching last nights game that I had to.
