RPI 2023-24: In Our 200th Year, We're Getting It Right

I am a long-time reader of this forum. Decided to register so that I could comment on the Mayor’s Cup. I’ve been attending these since the first one in 2013 – I think I have missed one. My comments on last night’s game:
  1. The atmosphere was unlike any I’ve previously experienced at an MC Game. Between the Union announcer and the enthusiastic Union fans, it felt like a home game for them. RPI fans were uncharacteristically quiet (the one caveat being the return of the Band. Never realize how much I miss them until they aren’t there, and it was great to see / hear them again).
  2. I did not realize that Union had rebranded itself “The Garnet Chargers”. What was wrong with Dutchmen / Dutchwomen?
  3. Sutter Muzzati’s 5-minute major in the 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] was a game killer. How does one of our best players do this to the team? I find these types of penalties by our best players inexcusable. Can someone correct me / explain if I am wrong?
  4. I realized at last night’s game that we had not scored a Mayor’s Cup goal in 4 years… since the 1-1 tie. So at least our 3 goals made the game exciting for awhile.
Looking forward to the Big Red Freakout and always optimistic that the team will turn things around!

Welcome, RPI_9293. Always good to get new posters here.

It seemed to me that during the national Anthem, the "Red" was louder than the "U", but I agree that during the game the Union presence seemed greater. Union was the home team. That alternates year to year in the Mayor's Cup game.

I have forgotten why Union changed its nickname.

Sutter Muzzatti gets a lot of penalties because of his size. The penalty was apparently deserved. I doubt that it was on purpose.

Muzzatti penalty was a game killer for sure. Refs made the right call unfortunately. I also thought the game had a more Union flair to it which is unacceptable. RPI fans were quiet probably because they’re so used to getting the crap kicked outta them every game they’re just numb to the ass beatings they endure every time they watch this team.

I share your optimism however im not so sure it’s under current staff. Maybe they will turn the ship next year hopefully so but if I was a betting man I would say more of the same until they really shake this program up.

awesome to see the girls win. They play hard every game.

Ralph didn’t union change their name because they’re worried about the Dutch. Lol

12th place RPI enters the week with what can only be viewed as dismal stats. Ten ECAC games left to play- 4 home, 6 road.
If anyone can talk me off the ledge, I'm all ears. I could use a pick me up right about now .... UGGH

Lowlights:

-116 penalties / 325 mins. (#1 in ECAC - Muzzatti is leader in the clubhouse with 73 mins)
-101 goals against (#1 in ECAC) By contrast, Q'pac has scored 102
-30.90 saves/game (#1 in ECAC)
-.670 penalty kill (#12 in ECAC)
-4.21 GPG allowed (#11 in ECAC)
-.460 faceoff win % (#11 in ECAC)

Highlight
-13.21 blocked shots per (#4 in ECAC)

On a lighter note, Stewart's has unveiled a new ice cream flavor in honor of RPI's fancy new IBM super computer and the school's 200th anniversary. Likely it will not be available at the HFH due to Ben & Jerry's presence at the rink.

https://www.timesunion.com/news/article/stewart-s-ice-cream-honoring-rpi-available-18635133.php

"...Quantum Freeze, vanilla with a tart cherry swirl and blue and red Pop Rocks, will replace Fireworks in the store's ice cream lineup and is a nod to the cutting-edge cooling system of the university's IBM Quantum System One supercomputer. In a news release, RPI said that students, faculty, staff and alumni submitted over 500 names for potential ice cream flavors last November, with Quantum Freeze winning the final vote.

The ice cream flavor is one of a series of commemorations the school has planned for its 200th anniversary. A bicentennial Big Red Freakout hockey game and an evening with U.S. Poet Laureate Tracey K. Smith are also in the works, the release said..."

My advice is to simply jump - it will be a lot less painful!

Seriously - This season has been as painful as a case of trigeminal neuralgia (Tic Douloureaux for the more medical posters). As posted by many, there is no quick answer to all of this but I still feel the bleeding could be addressed to a large extent and a tourniquet applied with all emphasis placed on defense both 5 on 5 and short handed. Virtually all the numbers you post are defensive deficiencies. Not any sort of political talking point, we need to build a wall at the blue line. This falls upon the coaching staff to insure that is where all focus has to be placed. If the boys we have on this roster are incapable of that, then the last 10 games will continue the nightmare and we will just have to hope we can address some of this for next year. But if a total defensive approach can be instituted, we could still surprise a few times as I do see enough offensive sparks to at least keep games closer.
For any success to come soon, we will have to rely on the recruit pipeline for next year (and I do not see any quick fixes there) or the transfer portal (much more likely) to solve the lack of defense.

Agree Doc. If nothing else, it sure would be nice for morale to lose some 2-1 games, versus the 4, 5 and 6 goal losses we've been enduring. It's a low bar for hope at this point !

I will reluctantly tune in to Smitty's weekly coming up shortly on 104.4 the Team ...because apparently I enjoy suffering ...ha ha

Yup all this points to a very poorly constructed and coached team. Especially since this is not a young team.

I stopped listening on Tuesday mainly because of statements like “we’re learning on the fly”or we need better results. At this point it makes no sense what’s being said.
