RPI 2022 Off-season: Surely, We Deserve Better

Got an email from a Former RPI Player's parent and they monitor the thread. They wanted me to add Alec Calveruso who they said "Dave pushed out". They were reminded of this because Alec pitched a shut out for AIC against AF to win Atlantic Tourney. He also made the all tourney team. Congrats Alec!!!

He was behind a kid named Savory who had a .932 GAA that same season. I have no idea about his being "pushed out" but I'd bet $5 the conversation went something like: " Well, Owen's our guy .....and I'm not sure you'll see much ice time....." So he likely was presented with a decision: Stay and sit behind Savory or depart to chase your dream and find a team that needs a keeper. Happens all the time, just not that often at RPI. I'm glad he found success at AIC.

Curtis I make 975k a year Powell was pissed at the survey results he went as far as calling the company who conducted it to try to mitigate damage. When he realized he wasn’t getting anywhere he became hostile towards them. Survey was conducted by a RPI alumni fwiw. I guess it pays to be friends with Shirley? How else do you explain that ridiculous salary. Wonder what McElroy is making 1.3 million a year?

Could not agree more with the sediment. However, there is never any need for guesswork when determining the salaries of the real "big shots" at places like RPI.

All tax exempt organizations under IRS Code 501 (c) (3), which includes most educational institutions, are required to file an annual Tax Form 990 with the IRS. One of the requirements of this very long form is a listing of key and highly compensated employees along with their salaries. Also required is a separate listing with the same information for any employees with a significant personal relationship to any of "big shots" on the first list. At RPI there are 17 of the first group and 2 of the second group who are both spouses. In turn, these returns are required by law to be posted on the IRS website for anyone with a computer to view in there entirety. A simple search of IRS 990 lookup will take you right to the portion of the IRS website with this information. From there it is nothing more than clicks and filling in a few boxes and it's download and read away.

Based on the return for calendar year 2019 (the latest one available on line), 16 of the 17 "big shots" range in total compensation (all 17 have either four or five types of compensation) from 342K to 772K. The biggest of the "big shots" checks in a 2.648 million. These can all be found on page 97 of the return. The two with significant relationships check in at 228K and 275K. These two can be found on page 102.

There are no RPI athletic people on either of the lists. Just for the sake of comparison Union has two such individuals on their 2019 "big shot" list though one is no longer there.

Unfortunately, the pandemic backlog has delayed the posting on line of the returns for calendar year 2020. You know, the year with a bevy of hard working grunts being laid off along with a 5% pay cut for the staff that remained. Eventually the IRS will catch up and at that time we will find out whether at least the pay cut applied to the magnificent 19 or if it was a total PR con job.

1) Seth outright cut two guys from the team - one of whom went on to have a couple of 30 point seasons at Holy Cross.
2) Calvaruso left Colorado College mid-season to return to junior hockey because he was the clear #2.
3) He enrolled at RPI behind two guys that had shown themselves to be starting quality goaltenders, including one who was on the all-rookie team and was a rookie-of-the-year finalist. He was the clear #3.
4) Most important, he says he was happy with his time at RPI. https://seamoresports.com/2021/12/0...ler-in-college-hockey-who-has-found-his-home/

Calvaruso was a wanderer in search of playing time. I'm glad he found some as a grad student at AIC, but that hardly seems to be a great indictment of Coach Smith.

See, no math.

Then why the numbers 1,2 ,3 ,4? Could you have used A,B,C, and D??

Just had a few moments for some sarcasm as Jenny and I are trying to recreate a concrete curb that the snow plow hit at the end our driveway this past winter. he must hit this thing at about 30+ mph as we found part of the concrete 20 feet onto the lawn. Not something i was trained to do, but Jenny is great working with concrete as she is of Italian heritage and can even use the stuff to make shoes if need be.

OK.

Yeah, I know using Roman numerals is cheating a little bit. See, very little math.

Dude, I'm telling you what I know. Some parents reached out to me because they thought that the representation of the "culture" of the program being rosy was not what they experienced. I love the deep dive on my posts though. It's a compliment. Be well.

Going to be a long off season for us again - glad there are some here who can keep their sense of humor. I think that is what I missed most about the last 2 years of pandemic hysteria. This was truly a period of Anhedonia. For those who do not want to GOOGLE that term, it is often added as the fifth "A" in descriptions of symptoms of schizophrenia. The inability to derive pleasure. Ambivalence, Autistic behavior, Looseness of Association and Inappropriate Affect would be the other 4 "A"s.

Yes, he was pushed out because we had this guy named Jack Watson coming in and couldn't carry 4 goalies for a second year in a row. You know that freshman who had a .922 sv% (16th in the country btw). Calvaruso has a .911 sv% for AIC who plays in the worst league in the country. Something tells me we made the right choice there

Edit: His sv% at RPI was .869; we really missed out on his stellar play!

SA has been gone long enough for everyone to move on with life. No need to keep beating a dead horse.

So you are admitting he was pushed. Thanks for the confirm.

What is the definition of pushed out? Calvaruso entered with 2 years played so he expected to be in Troy for no more than 2 years and that's what Smith expected too. He played a year and then one was cancelled. He was listed as a senior on the 2020-2021 roster so I presume he was at RPI on whatever scholarship he was given despite not playing. There is nowhere that says he was entitled to be kept on for an extra year, particularly when there were other players to whom a commitment was also made. If he'd gotten injured instead of the season being cancelled would that have created an obligation to keep him another year? No. In fact, that's the exact situation Shane Sellar was in and Ivy League rules wouldn't even let him go back to Dartmouth. This happens all the time in many sports where a graduating player still has eligibility but the team has another player they've committed to coming in. The coach says, "You've had a fine 4 years - congratulations on earning your degree and good luck in the future." Even if that's what Smith did, I don't see how that qualifies as pushed out. Each side met their commitment to the other. Instead he got to go somewhere else and picked up a graduate degree while playing. Congratulations Alec.

Wow your response is way too long for me, I only got to the first sentence and then stopped. Pushing out (v) - To facilitate the exit of a student athlete who believed enough in your program to sign up to play for it. The aforementioned Student Athlete goes onto find sucess with another program going so far as to win a regular season championship as a starter and also gaining All Tourney Honors en route to winning the Conference Championship.
