RPI 2020 Off-season: Off-season Cancelled

I think that I also met Seth twice, although conceivably I met him a third time. Once was when Hockeyhound introduced me to him at the HFH, and the other was when we played in Tampa.

i too wish him the best.

I too met him a few times. Smooth as silk and I am very glad he has found himself in the professional ranks. Actually glad he is anywhere besides at RPI. Felt strongly that he was just hired for the wrong place at the wrong time. Wish him well and hope he has as much success as possible in that organization.

Freshman class is announced, it has everyone we thought BUT it also has Nykanen, which is a surprise. I cannot stress this enough, but I do not like the decision to bring him in at all. He is just 18 who played in Canadian prep school last season. Turk saw one of his games at the HFH and thought he needed a year of juniors. If he thought that, I'm not sure why the coaching staff would think he is ready.

Considering DS said on the zoom call in April that they were bringing in 9 players which were 6 F, 2 D, and 1 G, I think a forward is leaving, probably having to due with COVID. That's the only thing that I can think of. But even then, I would think Finn Brown would come in because he at least played juniors last year.

This will be the only time I talk about this until we see Nykanen play because I believe in our coaching staff

https://twitter.com/RPIAthletics has also tweeted something about each recruit. I won't bother posting all of the individual links.

sezenack,

Did you check the directory to see if a forward isn't listed? I checked Mahshie because i wondered if his concussion was more serious than we thought. Not only is he there, he is there twice.

I just did. Every supposedly returning forward is listed twice, one of which is protected, except Ture Linden. One D, Helsen, isn't listed twice. All the returning goalies are listed twice. If this means that Linden is not returning, it is bad.

I'd guess that Nykanen is either a recruited walk-on or at most has a small scholarship share and he wanted to continue immediately to college. Our forwards lack star power but we do have depth so he and the staff may have chosen to let him develop for a year or two in the lower end of the depth chart. Alternatively, he may pull a Savory and show talent far beyond what his previous level of competition may indicate. The former is far more likely than the latter, but we can hope.

P.S. I see two errors in the release. Millbrook School is in NY (not CT) and the Austin Bruins are in the NAHL (not the AJHL). Any others?

That concussion must have been more serious than we thought. It apparently caused a split personality.

Really a shame about this whole lock down stuff. I really think we have an exciting team for the coming year. Arguably we were a team to reckon with late last season and could have been a handful for most teams in the playoffs.

Another note, I went 2/9 on jersey number predictions (I got Brackett and Miller correct). I did not predict Nykanen because I did not think he was coming to RPI yet

I would be surprised if Ture Linden is leaving, but anything is possible with this pandemic I guess

I hope you are correct. Because Nykannen is a European, it probably took a long time to get him through admissions. So i think that he started through admissions before Covid-19 was a major consideration. Thus if Linden is leaving it may not be due to the pandemic.

Linden does still have RPI on his Twitter page, but he doesn't use it much.

Another possibility is that Coach Smith said the wrong number of new players several months ago.

I thought Coach Smith also said on the webcast that all of the remaining players were returning. Is that true or is it a figment of my fading imagination? I really hope Linden is returning because we need him and I'm a fan of his solid two-way game. He's the poster boy for Smith's system.

Coach Smith did say that, so any player leaving would be a new development. I'm pretty sure the captains are Linden, Jerry, and Ferner, so I would be surprised if Linden is gone for that reason specifically. (The captains part is a conjecture, but I believe that's who the three captains are). Of course, captains can still leave before the season. We all remember John Marino leaving Harvard last season, and he was going to wear the "C".

What sort of ranking does he have? When I see 18 and prep school, I think that he might be one of the better players and, given RPI's relative stature, we need to scoop him up now and not risk losing him to one of the big dogs if he spent a year in juniors.

I think that is known as the Chase Polacek strategy. I was not of the impression that young Mr. Nykanen is of that caliber, but I would be happy to be wrong.

Today is 19 August 2020. There are 45 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 3 October 2020 for the start of next season.

Please note that I wrote that Linden might be leaving because he was only in the directory once. It could just be my paranoia.

The man that many on this thread disparaged for many years (you know who you are) gets pro hockey head coaching job. Congrats to Mr Pegula and the Sabres Organization for a great hire. Hard work pays off. https://buffalonews.com/sports/sabr...cle_460a6d86-de5f-11ea-90c8-ff73b7f2aebd.html

Congratulations and best wishes to Seth. After his hiring was announced, he did a couple of press conferences in which he addressed questions about RPI. I thought people might be interested in watching them.

Press conference with hockey media:
  • Questions about what happened at the end of his RPI tenure are at the 4:58 and 14:54 marks
  • He has general reflections about being a college hockey head coach around the 18:34 mark
  • Seth is asked about former RPI player, and Rochester native, Riley Bourbonnais at the 29:06 mark
  • For local media fans, Ken Schott from the Schenectady Gazette asks questions at the 12:03 mark, but not about RPI
1-on-1 conversation with Amerks media staffer:
  • Transition from RPI is discussed at 9:02 and 12:17 marks (Seth is first asked which city RPI is located in)
  • RPI players who played for both Seth and the Amerks are discussed beginning at 11:02 (D'Amigo, Kasdorf, and E. Burgdoerfer--the latter is overlooked by the interviewer, but Seth corrects the record)
