RPI 2019-2020: Life after Lovisa

I didn't watch but chuckled because they got a coach from a team which couldn't score to give this presentation. Then I remembered that she was a goalie and didn't score goals herself, so I chuckled again, although goalies probably know when shooters do things wrong. I would think that USA Hockey would have no trouble getting people to give these presentations, so it is a feather in Connolly's cap.

Maybe the coaching staff should concentrate on keeping their starting goalie as she enters the transfer portal.
Played 23 games, 22 as starter ... Went 0-21-1 with 3.56 goals against average and .915 save percentage ... Made 830 saves in 1297:29 ... At least 40 saves in nine games with three of 50-or-more ... Season-high 54 saves at Princeton ... Allowed two-or-fewer even-strength goals in nine games ... ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week once ...

I don't think there's really anything they can do to change a player's mind once she wants out. She's really the only one worth anything to other D1 teams anyway. Anyone else from this team that wants out of this terrible situation should seek out good D3 opportunities, or they could just quit the team and focus on their education. They'd probably be a lot happier and find more fulfilling activities to participate in than staying in a frustrating failure of a situation.

Long time forum lurker, first time poster. Created an account just to reply to this thread.

First, kudos to the passion of the RPI fans. At least there is a group of people who care about the program. The activity on this thread drove my interest. Even watched a few games (RPI TV is really good and free – great job by the students there).

Will try to be positive here. First, if a school is not a fit, it is not a fit. Players need to go to where they will be happy and if that is elsewhere, that is best for all involved. It goes both ways (transfers and recruit flips) – a few pages up it looks like RPI flipped a Yale recruit (not exactly a blue chip program but still) so win some, lose some. That is modern college athletics.

Finally, it looks like a very large class is coming in this fall. Does anyone know anything about the recruits coming in? Can any score? Only can go up from here.

Welcome Cornholio. Yes, RPI fans are a small but passionate cadre. And yes, the incoming class looks good, but probably only Ralph Baer follows it closely enough to pass judgement. The problem is, every incoming class of every program looks good, every year. Unless you have a couple (or more) outstanding recruits in the incoming class it is not going to make a difference. I don't see those outstanding recruits in the incoming class, sad to say.

I don't keep track of the women's recruit scoring, but from what little I have noticed there is not any real talent in that area.

Re: RPI 2019-2020: Life after Lovisa

Good insight. I’ve got no personal tie to RPI but have always enjoyed this thread and have a soft spot for the underdog, so will be rooting for them.

My observation of most teams is that if you have hard workers on the backend, can get 1 scoring line together and good goaltending, you will be at least a .500 team. If you can get 2 lines, you are in the national conversation. The goaltending at RPI always seems solid even if the starting goalie transfers. The backup looked to get a lot of action and had similar numbers. RPI had a large class last year and a large class this year so maybe there are 3 forwards who gell? The incoming class does not seem to have any superstars with no U18 members and neutral zone has only 1 listed at 3.75 star with the rest in the 3.0-3.5 range. Maybe someone is a late bloomer or overlooked?

Do you think RPI should be looking at more international players? It is unrealistic right now for RPI to compete for the top US/Canada players and other programs have had a lot of success here. I’m thinking Duluth a few years back and Maine right now. The team just seems to be 1 or 2 playmakers away. Is this way off?

Perhaps there are goalies who don't like being used for 60 minute shooting drills. Who knew? We've gotten away with it for so long with goaltenders like Selander and van der Bliek that it seemed almost normal.

I still haven't seen a non-anonymous public disclosure of any RPI women's player entering the transfer portal--has anyone?

Official transfer portal I believe is closed to the public. For sports like basketball, 3rd parties like 247Sports track the 'gossip'. For women's hockey, the gossip gets posted here I guess

Not gossip, but fact: call the coaching staff and inquire. Or ask her yourself.
Or check with her teammates.
But it’s fact!!!

When you don't put players in a position to succeed, they leave

Nystrom is no Selander and could not fill those skates.
Two goalies this year who barely played on their teams for two years came out of nowhere to have over .94 save percentages for the majority of the year. Maybe RPI has one in the wings.
