RPI 2018 Off-Season Part II: In Memory of WaP

45 days and no roster. And nothing RPI hockey related to talk about.
The AD and head coach have no idea what good public relations is all about.
They have to get out there and give the fans something to look forward to this coming season. Especially with the personnel turnover coming into the season.
Agree wholeheartedly !!!

A few asked about the golf outing and the lack of information coming back from it. I was there and can fill in a bit. Likely some of the reason you haven't seen any comments on it...is that it was rather lightly attended from years past. A total of 20 groups (not all being foursomes) were in attendance. Weather (thankfully) held out nicely - some sprinkles at the end but the real rain didn't start until we sat down for dinner. A perk about lower attendance is the day on the course moves quicker and overall the day ends earlier. For those with drives home, it's appreciated.

Dana McGuane was not in attendance, for as you know he's abroad at the 5 Nations tournament. His son, Patrick, was there as has become custom. Also not there physically was Nolan, however he was there in spirit. Coach made a point of passing on word of Nolan, and to thank the RPI family for their continued thoughts and prayers to his family. During the event, I was told that Nolan plans to move back to BC as he recuperates. He's had a very tough road, and that's going to continue for some time. For those who know him, by all means reach out, as the interaction (even just on Twitter) helps a lot.

The boys were out in force on the tee boxes; many provided extra shots when asked, which was a nice return that that form. On one hole, as you saw, teams were required to putt using a hockey stick which was a nice addition. As we all know, there are many newbies this year, and they are all eager to get going. One thing that they cut from the dinner program was the player introductions - name, position, year, major - and I hope they bring that back.

The auction portion of the dinner was downright awkward. Not sure if it was related to the lighter attendance, frustration with the program's record of late, or frustration with the administration itself, but people were not opening their pocketbooks for anything. Signed Adam Oates jerseys went for $100 and $90. The experience on the bench, which has gone the last few years for $1000 or more, went for $300. I felt bad for Al Shibley, who emceed the event and ran that part.

As my form of silent protest, I wore my "Renew Rensselaer" pin during the event - it got a few looks at time from some members of the administration, but no comments. It did lead to a nice conversation with one of the members of the team, however - and we spoke about last fall's protest, and the Greek fiasco of late.

Thanks for the report. 20 groups is a drastic drop in attendance --given that in SA's last year there was talk of AM and PM rounds due to the sheer number of golfers.

Re: RPI 2018 Off-Season Part II: In Memory of WaP

Toxic money is a completely separate bear, and I certainly hope you don't think that, because it happened at a couple of institutions, that it creates a direct correlation across all institutions.

The fact of the matter is that men's ice hockey is one of the few cash flow positive entities at RPI. Perhaps that's why the administration took it over in a hostile manner. Is the administration now taking it for granted? Perhaps, given the "lackadaisical efforts" I'd say started when they took over. And given they're pretty much milking any source of money they can, i.e. the epitome of socialism, I wouldn't be surprised if the coffers start to run drier now that parallels can be drawn to today's society and people are becoming more the wise to it.

Is it really cash flow positive?

I remember that - we actually brought it up at our table in discussions at dinner.

Re: RPI 2018 Off-Season Part II: In Memory of WaP

Thanks for the report. Did you notice any absences or presences among upper classmen which are not what we have been expecting?

No one else notable. Given the lack of a full team intro at dinner though, it was a little harder to keep track of who I'd seen on the course.

For those who feel a sense of impatience because it's 45 days before RPI's first hockey game and the rpiathletics website still shows last season's hockey roster -

It's 9 days before RPI's first football game and the rpiathletics website still shows last season's football roster.

Same for men's and women's soccer, which are only 8 days away from their respective opening games. Maybe frat recruitment wasn't the only thing that Shirley put on hold until October.

Wasn't there a recent year where the team photo didn't get done until really late in the season?

Today is 24 August 2018. There are 44 days until RPI's next game and still no roster.

This is based upon 7 October 2018 for the start of next season.

The only forward who is using up his eligibility in the upcoming season is Brady Wiffen. We supposedly have six incoming forwards with others a strong possibility. They are Ashbrook, Bendorf, Brackett, Matt Cameron, Dubinsky, and Herrman. (Interesting that we appear to have a propensity to recruit players from near the start of the alphabet. A wise decision. ;) ) Personally, I doubt that Brackett, Cameron, and Dubinsky are coming next fall. OTOH Ashbrook will be using up his junior eligibility, and everything points to Bendorf and Herrman arriving. I thus think that there will be another purge of players next summer. Probably not as many as this year, but still a significant event.

I hope not, and I'm not sure that's the case. We are losing two defenseman and only bringing in one at this point. I'm actually wondering whether Moore might play upfront instead, which would balance the defense inflow/outflow and offset another recruit up front. Also, there were signs from the Ottawa camp that Burgess may finally be healthy this year. If he has a breakout season this would be the normal year for him to sign so the staff has to be prepared for that. Lastly, depending on what they think of Savory (good goalies can come from lower leagues) we might be looking for just a walk-on third stringer to replace Perry and put off bringing in a potential starter until '20. On the other hand, Savory may just be that walk-on 3rd stringer. We should know in the coming months.

A coach can probably get away with one purge of players left by his predecessor, but if it appears to be an annual exercise recruiting will become a nearly impossible task. I hope that's not Smith's plan.

I agree that Burgess could turn pro. I also think that your analysis of Savory and the goalie situation is correct.

As to Moore consider the following. We can now dress a 19th skater. Will it be a 13th forward or a 7th defenseman? The way I see it, it will be someone who can play both, and Moore fits that bill better than anyone we now have. The 19th skater will keep a team from having to player few than 4 lines or 3 sets on D in the case of an injury during the game or someone getting a 10-minute misconduct or being ejected. That versatile player need not be the 19th player -- he could play a regular shift and then switch as need with the 19th player being inserted.

Great point. I'd forgotten about that rule change.

Pretty near to needing to take wild guesses on the jersey numbers, eh? Although I have a feeling, once classes start up, we'll have the info.

I would love to guess the numbers, but until we get a roster, I would first have to guess the players.:eek:
