RPI 2016 Off Season thread: A Drivel-free Summer

Agreed. This is a lousy representation of college hockey venues. Places like UMASS, UCONN and Niagara where they get few fans and have little tradition get ranked above place like BC, et al?
Clarkson's Cheel Arena is nice, but hardly in the top ten. Their Pep Band is mentioned as a great factor. Their band is above average, but not great. Union is riding the tails of national recognition from a great 5-year run. The building leaves a great deal to be desired. Where is Lynah Rink? HFH is not a great facility for fans, but certainly above where it is ranked. I spent way too much time on this already (about 10 minutes) so will not even look at any future rating done by this site. It does a disservice to college hockey.

Re: RPI 2016 Off Season thread: A Drivel-free Summer

With respect to the rankings, seems to me there are too many categories related to items that are unrelated to the task at hand: watching the game. I think most fans would be very glad to have a good sight line in a clean, well lit rink with an atmosphere that is exciting. All of the extra stuff about where the rink is, how hard it is to get to, price of tickets, food choices are less important.

Bright arena is one of my favorite places to see a game. Great view of the game from everywhere, well lit, good mix of home and away fans, etc - yet it finished 50th. BU's got a nice facility with all of the perks but for me there's no doubt that you come away from the game with a better appreciation for the game's speed and skill when at Harvard.

They did get 1 thing right - Bentley should be last!

Bentley was not worse than Union. Bentley at least has the charm of being that place where you first learned how to skate, where you first picked up a stick. Union doesn't even have that.

Never been to Messa so I can't argue with you really...

Re: RPI 2016 Off Season thread: A Drivel-free Summer

Well it is still snowing in northern MI, and we still think of hockey. Some miscellaneous thoughts: after watching ND and Denver, RPI needs more than a couple of players who can enable the team to match the puck movement, breakouts, and just fluid play of the two teams. Or maybe a new assistant coach to revamp the offense and get the power play working. I am afraid going forward, it is going to be very difficult for the smaller schools (Atlantic Hockey, RPI, Union, Clarkson, SLU, Lake State, etc) to have consistent success on the national level.New teams will come from large, excellent facilities, well funded sources-Syracuse, RI, Iowa, Nebraska, PAC 12, Florida (why else have the FF there?). Competition for talent will be intense and the smaller schools will just not be able to compete. There will be more Findlays and Fairfields. I would not be surprised if in 10 - 15 years, hockey will go the way of fooball and have two tiers of teams. Or winter has just been too long and all our brains are frozen up here .

My bet is your brains are frozen.

I LOL'd.

Yeah, no kidding. Can't wait to read where this guy thinks SU is going to put a men's hockey team... War Memorial's double booked (AHL's Crunch and Indoor Soccer's Silver Knights), Tennity's good for women but not for men (too small), and I don't know what the speed record is for setting up and taking down temporary ice at the dome...

Not much to disagree with in this excerpt. I remember watching RPI play Notre Dame when the latter opened their new rink, and commented at the time: the Notre Dame players would pass the puck to a spot on the ice where they expected a teammate to be when the puck arrived there, while the RPI players were passing the puck to each other. Clearly evident from watching and I don't know the intricacies and details of ice hockey nearly as well as other sports I follow.

Leading the teammate is not limited to hockey. You see it in pretty much every team sport, as well as hunting, especially when there is a moving target involved.

Doesn't surprise me that you're a hunter, seeing as how you already said you hate animals.

If that is true, sort of puts an entirely new light on things for both Jen and I. We spend much of our time involved in animal rescue with particular emphasis on cats. Over the years we have had a plethora of them but for those that recall a post of mine from some time ago, we have lost all of those that were named fro RPI hockey players. The last one of those we lost at age 16 1/2 was Hamish last year.

Never surprised that jericho makes assumptions about me and comes to the wrong conclusions. You don't have to be a hunter to know about moving targets.

That is true. Throughout my life I have known a few women who can move pretty well. (Jen is out visiting a friend around the corner or else i could never have posted that - and if she sees it I may live to regret it)
