Reminds me a bit about the the song Harry Chapin said he wrote when he was visiting (or stuck in) Watertown NY for a day-"Better Place To Be"

He spent a week there one afternoon...

Re: RPI 2015 Off Season Thread: Another Long Spring and Summer :(

I missed all of this important posting-are we talking about upscale New York? Then I might have some interest.

Pretty much the case, Doc: upscale NY = downstate.

Weight the dividing line by population, net worth, "happening events," successful professional sports franchises, Congressional representation, however you want; about 20% of the geography of NY is upscale / downstate and 80% of the geography is upstate.

Only a stubborn self-important egotistical megalomaniac would continue to insist otherwise: "upstate" and "downstate" refer to a state of mind, not to the physical geography.

Just like uptown and downtown.

With the rumors flying around that the Buffalo Sabres have more than a mild interest in obtaining Cam Talbot in a trade with the NY Rangers before the draft, that eventuality could put a damper on Jason Kasdorf's future prospects unless of course he was included in that deal and was in the mix for their backup having to battle with Makenzie Skapski. In either case, Long Island is definitely downstate - can we agree on that?

Probably not.
And this is where I have to chime in and say I agree with Ralph. The true answer to this question is: if you ask someone where they are from and they say "upstate NY" then they are from Upstate NY. And there is the subtlety that it can be a region or a direction. If someone from NYC refers to Poughkeepsie as "Upstate" that doesn't make it the upstate region. It does make it the direction. Of course, "north" would be a better description for that. And of course Poughkeepsie is "downstate" from Albany but that's in a sense of direction and not region (and yes, south would work better there too). If you ask someone from Poughkeepsie where they are from though, I'll bet they won't say upstate. And I'd be surprised if they say downstate either. I've never asked someone where they are from and gotten "downstate NY" as a first response.

In my opinion, there really is no "downstate" region and that is because not many people (if any) refer to themselves as from "downstate" or seem to think that because they come from Binghampton they somehow share a common bond with people from Poughkeepsie and Jamestown.

Upstate is a different story and lots of people in Upstate NY readily describe where they are from as "Upstate". Primarily this is because when you say you are from New York to someone from another state, you have to explain that you are not from NYC. So you say Upstate NY and usually you say that first. Then, if the person actually knows what that means then you can tell them what town or city. Most people from Upstate share common experiences growing up - often tied to the weather and specifically winter.

I grew up in and around Utica, which is absolutely part of Upstate NY according to everyone who lives there. And I would draw the boundaries for Upstate as anything along and north of rte 20 but bounded to the west at some point. Syracuse or the easternmost fingerlake perhaps? Things definitely change west of there. Of course we could just use "soda" vs. "pop" as the delineator but that seems too far west too.

I once tried to settle this with the people that I work with in LI and NYC. After a whole bunch of arguing, I finally said "How about we say that 'downstate' is anything that is accesible by the MTA, and "upstate" does not have that access. They didn't argue with me. Since the MTA goes from Manhattan to Poughkeepsie, that pretty much settled it.

That is a great song. Did he write it in a diner?

Not sure but i think so. Harry was a patient of my department chief at Boston University Hospital way back in the early 70's. I got to see him and talk with him on occasion there. Jenny and i attended several of his concerts down here in NJ and always went up to see him after the shows. He remembered me and signed some memorabilia (especially after we gave donations to his crusade against hunger here in the US). A regular guy who wrote great songs that all told a story. We lost a great talent in the early 80's when he got crushed driving his VW on the LI Expressway. I guess that truly qualified as DOWNstate NY.

Perhaps-but certainly not upscale. I was stationed one summer at the then Camp Drum (now Fort Drum) and my entire unit drove to Watertown for a weekend of R and R which included a lot of time at the Clock Lounge. I ended up treating almost all the guys for the Clap after that visit. Just a little anecdote to pass the time while we wait for some hockey news.:)
