RPI 2013/14 Part III: Maximum Overdrivel

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part III: Maximum Overdrivel

Mike Zalewski is listed as the #32 NHL prospect in the NCAA by SB Nation http://www.sbncollegehockey.com/201...-100-nhl-prospects-21-40-free-agent-nhl-draft.

32. Mike Zalewski, Forward, RPI (Free Agent)

The RPI sophomore is a big-bodied winger that has the potential to be a great bottom six forward at the NHL level. He is very strong along the wall, brings a physical presence to the ice and can really muck it up and grind it. He's scored eight goals this season, including two on the penalty kill, but he has the potential to make a living as a third or fourth line winger in the pros.

He is the 2nd highest ranked free agent on the list.

Thanks for the kind words about the band! The band will definitely be playing at this weekend's series (and I'll be with them for Saturday and Sunday), though I'm sure spring break will have shrunk their numbers. I imagine the managers will do their best to throw together a road trip for the quarterfinals should we advance. I've never seen the team happier than when they beat Clarkson on the road two years ago. Maybe they can best that by beating Colgate (or Quinnipiac or Cornell) on the road this year!

Will the future Mrs. Lug (or Mrs. Nut?) be there too?

Unless you are taking her name, in which case it would be the future Mr. RKarger ;)

She's still a student, so she'll be at both (or all three) games this weekend, and wherever we go after.

actually, Chris McCarthy of Vermont is #30. Should see Haggs tomorrow? 41-60.

The intro said the first free agent (singular) was included and I knew Z is a free agent, so I wrote that. When I went back I noticed that he was the 2nd.

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part III: Maximum Overdrivel

2 things that I see hampering this team:

First is the lack of a transition game. This all starts with the defensemen. They are very slow afoot and are not very accurate with the first pass out of the zone. Very rarely this season did I see RPI attacking the opposing defense with a full head of steam.

Second is the lack of depth. Not to hurt anyone's feelings but this is the worst performance I have ever seen out of a freshman class since I have followed RPI hockey. Outside of the top 6 forwards and a couple of stay at home defensemen, I am not seeing all the talent everyone else is seeing. If anything, RPI has 2 potential matchups where they could advance so we will see what happens.

Well said along with Dr D comments. Recent games have no freshman dressing for a .500 team with a 24 SOS (strength of schedule). Not a sign of freshman class strength. Great recruiting resulting in teams that struggle to reach .500 doesn't make sense. Either recruiting isn't as good as advertised or strategy and adjustments are faulty as Dr D writes. Speaking of Harvard I am relieved we play Dartmouth rather than an improved Harvard team, a Brown team that has beaten RPI twice in home playoffs or a St larwence team that looked very confident at the HFH. Go RPI next 3 weekends.

No offense, but you may not have seen what Dartmouth has been doing lately.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd sort of rather we played Harvard. Brown and SLU, as you mentioned. Dartmouth, just that uneasy feeling about sweeping them in the RS and their play as of recent, not to mention what happened five years ago. Harvard, on the other hand, they may have gone into the game overconfident having beat us in the series back when they weren't so hot. The worth, however, is about as much as Rosie O'Donnell's salad course at a buffet. Dartmouth is our opponent, and that is who we must prepare to play.

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part III: Maximum Overdrivel

I wonder what got him into SA's dog house. Wood, DeVito, and Soffer are as I expected. Reno was performing better than I expected early. I don't know what happened since then. That isn't to say that Bokenfohr hasn't deserved the ice team he has been receiving. He has. However both IMHO are among our top-6 defensemen.

+1. I agree that Bokenfohr has played well and am at a loss as to why all of a sudden that Reno wasnt getting any ice time. DeVito seem to get better each game, and I always loved Wood's speed and aggressiveness. Granted that Wood got some significant penalties, but why does he sit when there are multiple others that got the same, game after game after game, that didnt. I'm perplexed and just doesnt make sense to me...not that I know or have any sense for the reason things are done at a team level.

Not sold on DeVito. 4 points all year and no goals since BC in Oct. I would have played Riley B just for development purposes more since your not losing much. I don't know what Jimmie D is doing on the second power play unit he is just not a big skill player. I was disappointed to see Appert match his top line with the top Carey line in the SLU game and the results were no goals for RPI and three for Carey's line. I think it is dumb to waste your top line that way Carey is a great player on O and D. and it showed. Always liked a checking line against the opponents top line. Tired of this 'engineer hockey' which invites penalties as we have seen all year and no adjustments as mentioned previously. We have plenty of skilled players so every goal doesnt have to be a crash the net goal. I wonder if Oates would have sat under this system. Not very fast and did not play the body much. He did have pretty good hands though. Just my opinion.

While thats a lovely thought, there's a small bit of business that needs tending to this weekend...

+2. I would add to Ralph's thoughts by saying Bokenfohr's progression took me by surprise has been outstanding....I've got him penciled in now for MIP.
