RPI 2013/14 Part II: The HFH is Covered with Frozen Drivel

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part II: The HFH is Covered with Frozen Drivel

That's not true, Higgs had every right to back at Bodie. The situation only escalates when all the RPI players coming off the bench decide to take runs at Union players that aren't even involved in the initial scrum and the mob mentality took over. Bo Dolan wasn't even on the ice for the last shift of the game but as soon as he gets on the ice he starts flying around trying to fight anyone in a garnet uniform.

To be fair, they weren't coming off the bench to get into a fight - they were coming off the bench the way any team would at the end of a game they just won to mob their goaltender. The way the players coming off the bench kind of all run into each other at first as they encounter Bodie wrestling with Higgs is pretty much indicative of that.

Dolan should indeed get further sanction. Vecchione could too.

I can't argue with you about your first point at all as that is standard hockey protocol. I guess the point I'm arguing is you can't place blame on either team for that getting out of control the way that it did. Emotions were high and for anyone to put complete blame on either side is misguided.

What I surprisingly haven't seen mentioned is I thought the officials clearly lost control of the game in the third period. You could see the tensions rising from both sides as the game went along and the officials swallowing of the whistles in the third was a precursor to the nastiness that boiled over at the end. I guess I'm an idiot for expecting any better out of the ECAC, but Chip McDonald and both the linesmen were on the ice for the game in Troy this year that got out of hand. All three should've known that they needed to nip things in the bud early in the third.

Ryan Haggerty is all the players?

Holy contradiction, Batman. So which is it? Were they coming off the bench to start a fight, or coming off the bench to celebrate a win?

Celebrating the win goes out the window as soon as RPI players start looking for fights instead of going towards the celebration. DeVito, Dolan, etc. go straight towards the scrum and start taking runs at Union players. At this point Union still has only the six skaters on the ice that were out for the final faceoff. Union bench never empties until Curadi tries to be a tough guy and goes over to the Union bench shoving people who to that point had not been involved. At this point Curadi keeps taking swings at Union players (Ikkala is the first, he skates away) until Lichtenwald finally steps in.

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part II: The HFH is Covered with Frozen Drivel

Since there was a game last night, I would like to point out that Diebold had a fantastic game and made it possible for RPI to win.
Zalewski got the first star of the game for scoring the winning goal, but without Diebold, there would have been no opportunity to score a winning goal.
I just thought that we should salute the RPI Engineers for a stellar performance for sixty minutes.

Amen to this.

None of this - at all - happens without Bodie's cheapshot on Higgs. That's the activity that set off the chain reaction afterwards. Interesting how he had amnesia or something after the game and couldn't remember how it all started.

I'm shocked the school even let the players talk to the press, especially the last time they threw a hissy-fit after this sort of thing happened.

I'm a little surprised no penalty assessed to either coach. Here's another angle of the video, beginning before the other one.

Who is the RPI coach that comes over the boards at the 1:09 mark in this video?
Funny how he hides behind the ref, then reaches around and gives the Union guy a good shove (at the 1:19 mark)...
hides behind the ref again, then runs and hides like a little girl at the 1:25 mark.
What coach is that? He should get at least 1 game DQ for being a wuss! :p

Not sure. Vines is in the bench entrance, Graham is next to him, Kirk MacDonald is facing the bench, and Appert is being restrained by a trainer. Probably a good thing Dana McGuane didn't get involved.
