ECAC Hockey today announced the following suspensions stemming from an on-ice post game incident which took place in the Rensselaer vs. Union contest Saturday, January 25 at the Times Union Center, Albany, N.Y.
Senior defenseman Mat Bodie, who was assessed roughing and facemaking penalties, along with a game disqualification at the 20:00 mark, which merits an automatic one-game suspension, received an additional one-game suspension by the league for his actions during the post game incident. As a result, Mr. Bodie, is not eligible to compete in the Dutchmen’s next two contests Friday, January 31 at St. Lawrence and Saturday, February 1 at Clarkson.
Union’s Daniel Ciampini, junior forward, has also received a one-game suspension by the league for his actions during the post-game incident. He is not eligible to compete in the Dutchmen’s next contest, Friday, January 31 at St. Lawrence.
The league office also handed out one-game suspensions to Rensselaer’s senior defenseman Bo Dolan and junior forward Ryan Haggerty for their post-game actions. Based upon the league’s actions, Mr. Dolan and Mr. Haggerty will not be eligible to participate in Rensselaer’s next game Friday, January 31 at Clarkson.
The actions during the post-game incident of both Rensselaer head coach Seth Appert and Union head coach Rick Bennett were reviewed by the league office. After conferring with administrators from both Rensselaer and Union, the league supports the two-game suspension of Dutchmen head coach Rick Bennett for his involvement in the post game incident, which was initially rendered Sunday, January 26 by the college. Mr. Bennett is not eligible to serve as coach in the Dutchmen’s next two contests Friday, January 31 at St. Lawrence and Saturday, February 1 at Clarkson.
In addition, three other student-athletes were assessed a major penalty for fighting and a game disqualification penalty at the 20:00 mark of the third-period, which by NCAA rules automatically merit a one-game suspension. As a result, Rensselaer defenseman junior Luke Curadi and sophomore forward Mike Zalewski will not be eligible to take part in the Engineers’ Friday, January 31 game when they face Clarkson; and Union’s freshman forward Eli Lichtenwald is not eligible to compete in the Dutchmen’s next contest, Friday, January 31 at St. Lawrence.
