Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

On Sunday, the Vernon Vipers defeated the Prince George Spruce Kings 5-4 in overtime. Mike Zalewski had a hat trick including the tieing goal with 20 seconds left and the OT game winner. Needless to say, he was named #1 star. http://www.bchl.ca/leagues/hockey_boxscores.cfm?clientID=1413&leagueID=2393&gameID=977767&link=bchl

Zalewski's line is now 44-27-28-55-57.

It must have been an exciting game ending. PG scored at 14:55 and 16:14 of the third to grab a 3-2 lead. With 1:11 left, PG scored an ENG to lead 4-2. Then Vernon was awarded a penalty shot and scored that with 45 seconds left. With 20 seconds left, Zalewski tied it, and then won it 22 seconds into overtime unassisted.

I was thinking this morning if this was the best single-game performance by an RPI recruit since I started paying attention. The only other game that came to mind was Brandon Pirri's last regular-season game in 2008 http://ojhlsite.stats.pointstreak.com/boxscore.html?gameid=781536 where he scored all 5 goals in a 5-4 OT victory, bringing Georgetown back from 3-0 and 4-3 deficits. That game, however, was pretty meaningless to Georgetown while Vernon is fighting for a playoff berth. (Mark McGowan was a teammate of Pirri.)

BTW, I wonder how many people left yesterdays's game after the ENG.

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

Originally I really did not think this list of recruits was all that impressive. As time goes on, however, some have shown some rather surprising results. On the plus side we have Zalewski, Melanson, Bourbonnais and Wood-who seem like they will add a good deal of offensive capability for us. I am a bit surprised by the numbers being put up by Kasdorf however. Even if his team has done poorly, I did not expect his save percentage to fall this far. Just thinking out loud......

What I have a hard time coping with is how good the USHL has become relative to all of the other sources of recruits in recent years. SA has recognized this and now we get most of our recruits from there. I have been disappointed with the performance of our recuits there, but it may be that I am expected numbers like what are put up in the OJHL and CJHL, and that just doesn't happen.

Bourbonnais and DeVito are among their teams' leaders offensively. It's still too early to evaluate Bubela. Miller will remain a mystery. He seems to get enough shots. Perhaps they are weak or he telegraphs what he is doing. I agree about Kasdorf. I might as well men ion everyone in the USHL by adding that Bradley appears to be his team's top defenseman, so that's good too.

As to the others, Melanson is certainly tearing things up in the Prep ranks even when Delbarton goes to New England. I'd love to see him in the USHL next year, but I suspect he will stay in NJ. Zalewski's numbers speak for themselves. Wood also will hopefully go elsewhere next year. I wish that I could find soemthing about Manley online, but I can wait until next season.

Sort of reminds me of the Thanksgiving tournament game vs. Union a few years ago. Union scores to make it 4-2, everyone starts leaving. RPI scores about 30 seconds later, horn goes off, and everyone turns around. We all know what happened at 59:59, and unfortunately what happened in OT.

I can't wait to see Zalewski in an RPI jersey.

This crew, expecially Zalewski, looks like it could add some punch to the offense. We all know that the numbers do not always transfer when they become frosh in the ECAC, however. Some players are surprises when they reach college, both negative and positive. Look at the hype a lot of people, especially on this forum, gave Laliberte. He came out of the same league as Andrew Caloff of Princeton who was the Ivy League's co-rookie of the year and had 9 goals and 24 assists last season. Laliberte put up slightly better numbers in Juniors, yet has not produced much offensively yet at RPI. Some players take longer to adapt and some never do, so we have to be be patient and see what develops.

On the plus side, it looks like this current group of Engineers has found their stride. This weekend will be tough, hosting 2 of the top 3 teams in the league, but at least it appears that the team can now compete with the better teams in the league and at least have a shot at pulling out some wins down the stretch. That was not the case a couple of weeks ago. The future looks bright.

Ralph: I think Zalewski will be a bit more of a known entity -- for the mere fact that he'll enter the 'tute as a 20 yr. old with 2 yrs/ of BCHL grind under his belt. Also, he's about the same size as Tinordi, but with better offensive punch in a better Jr. league (chew on that and dream for a minute Doc!). I'm not worried about Kasdorf. The level of play is several notches better in the U than his former MJHL, he's adjusting to life pretty far from home, etc. etc.. I have a strong feeling Appert will ask him to do another year in the USHL -- he needs more time to develop, from what I can see, we don't have any reason to bring him this fall, burning a year of his elgibility, given that we already have Merriam and Diebold. Of course Edmonton and his advisor will likely have a say in this.

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

On Tuesday, the Delbarton School defeated Lawrenceville 6-0. Drew Melanson scored a goal. http://highschoolsports.nj.com/game/score/1164129/

Melanson's line is now 16-10-22-32-x.

Not real competition for Delbarton today. They just have so much more than the local competition. Josh Melnick is a forward worth watching-but I think he is even smaller than JL was at this stage. He might weigh 135 but he can shoot and score. I wonder how many off this roster will end up in the NCAA in the next couple years?

He you have right-Edmonton and his advisor will call the shots. But he needs to start showing some signs of improvement or maturing soon. Zalewski really does seem like my kind of boy. You know I am a big Tinordi fan-it has taken him some time-but he is starting to contribute more and more all the time. After the early part of this season-when we suffered all the injuries to the freshman forwards-it really points out the value of depth and that we can never have enough.

That last line is key. I can see us losing him if we want him to stay in the USHL. We could lose him even if we want him to come since he won't be guaranteed the starting job.

I LOVE Tinordi Doc! I smile every time he goes over the boards...and Seth has done a very good job of having on the ice when physicality was needed...when things get a little chippy. I thought he had and outstanding weekend, he seems to be hitting his stride in the offensive end -- far more comfortable- taking his play to the net. Good things ahead for him IMO. Put him on a line with Z next year...that HAS to be enough to get you back to HFH !!!!:D

I wouldn't put Tinordi and Z on the same line. We have two many smaller forwards who could use a physical presence on their lines.
