RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

Thought folks might be intersted in this article on Tanner Spink, the younger brother of Colgate bound Spink twins. His AAA coach states he thinks Tanner is the best of the 3 and is drawing heavy interest from both D1 and OHL. Tanner will play in Cornwall next season. IMO, he looks pretty good in Cherry and White .

It will be hard to keep him from toothpaste if he goes the college route.

Cant argue with that one. Especially since theres like 2-3 other current teammates of the Spinks up in Cornwall that are headed to Colgate next season.

I have been wondering though, if RPI has any interest in Andrew Ming who plays on the same midget team as Tanner Spink. His brother Eric stated in an article a couple years ago that it was his dream to play hockey at RPI someday, of course a couple months later he goes and signs with Kitchener, so who knows.

Perhaps there was a connection to playing under Monty?

I wonder if that really was Eric's dream, or if he was just using it as leverage for Kitchener.

The thought certainly occurred to me. There is always the possiblity (I'll let y'all speculate...how remote)that as the younger brother, he'll want to step out of his older brothers' shadow and blaze his own path. Especially when his immediate future has him following the twins to Cornwall. As he is the captain of his AAA team, he doesn't seem to lack in confidence.

That said, if his talent is as good or greater than his brothers, he may well be getting pursued by larger HE or MW programs.

Well Zalewski did that and so have others, but most seem to go to the same place.

It certainly makes it easier on the parents-they can see all their kids in the same place at the same time. So who could blame them? I suspect a similar situation is developing at Delbarton here in NJ with the Agostinos. We have seen someone from Yale there often.

Speaking of Zalewski, I was looking at his stats so far this season in the BCHL and comparing them to other RPI recruits that came out of that league. As of now with 46 games played, he has 59 points, Kirk MacDonald who played 49 games in his last season in the BCHL had 50 points. I think its a pretty good comparison as both guys are right around 6'2"-6'3" and 200lbs, so Id be really happy if MZ turns out to be the same kind of point producer that KM was at RPI. IMO, I believe he has the potential, if used right, to be one of the biggest impact freshmen weve seen at RPI in many years.

agreed he looks like big potential. Kirk only had 6 points his freshman year and then blossomed in his soph year. Hopefully this years frosh will do the same next year. Impressed with Mcgowan. He went in the corners with Collins of the little red and held his own.

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

Totally agree Red. His brother Steve was an outstanding two way player at CCT...Mike has a bit more size and all of the finishing skills. I believe he'll follow in his older brother's footsteps...(108 ECAC career pts...)

Funny you should bring this up... USHR did a follow-up piece on the top uncommitteds around the junior ranks and heres what they said about Marc Biega, whos three older brothers all went to Harvard.

3. Marc Biega, D, 94 (Salisbury) 6-1/195—Salisbury’s captain has led the team to an impressive 16-3 record while producing 27 points in only 19 games played. Has had three brothers play hockey at Harvard, but the Montreal, Quebec native will not be the fourth. Will quarterback a D1 power play in the future. A number of ECAC and Hockey East schools are interested.

How about seeing a Biega in cherry and white?? :D

FWIW, heres a few other names listed that have caught my eye in the past:
Dalen Hedges-Nepean(CCHL)
Darcy Murphy-Wellington(OJHL)
Alex Iaffalo-Fargo(USHL)
John Stevens-Salisbury(Prep)
Woody Hudson-Indiana(USHL)

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

Looks like Kasdorf has some new competition between the pipes in Des Moines. The Bucs traded away G-Christian Frey to Tri-City for goaltender and MTU recruit Pheonix Copley. It will be interesting to see if this has any effect on the amount of playing time JK is getting.

http://theworldofjuniorhockey.blogspot.com/2012/02/bucs-tri-city-exchange-goalies-at.html

I suspect that he will get less playing time in the short term, but in the long term it depends how well Copley performs.

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

On Tuesday, the Delbarton School defeated Bergen Catholic 7-1. Drew Melanson had a goal and an assist. http://highschoolsports.nj.com/game/score/1161247/

Melanson's line is now 19-13-26-39-x.

We were planning to see this game but we stayed locally instead. Bergen Catholic is another of those teams that really gives Delbarton no competition. I will wait and see if they play Don Bosco Prep or Notre Dame Prep-those are games that would be more of a test and I would love to see how they do.

The only team in NJ that would give them trouble is the Devils, and I am not sure about them. ;)

Hudson is a RIT commit.

17. Woody Hudson, F, ’92 (Indiana-USHL) 6-3/225—Recently decommitted from RIT. The former Milton Academy forward, now playing in Indiana, is a physical specimen who is extremely difficult to play against. Will make for a very effective third line player in college. :)
