RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

It's interesting that we'd sign a 15yo 5'-8", 140lb defenseman. It made a lot of sense, of course, to grab smaller young forwards like Wood and Melanson, who wouldn't need to grow up to necessarily make an impact. But for a defenseman, we're banking on Manley growing at least three inches and at least 40 pounds. Not that it's unlikely, but it's much more of a gamble than with the forwards, who could stay the same size and still potentially be effective.

He is only 15 years old. He could grow that much. BTW, I wrote to Heisenberg, and he said he weighs 155 lb. He knows nothing else about him.

Piece from USHR:

5’8”, 140 lb. Selects Academy sophomore defenseman Charles Manley has committed to RPI.

A 7/16/96 birthdate from Orchard Park, NY, Manley formerly played in the Buffalo Regals organization. He’s a fluid skater, and very light on his feet -- a good puck- handling defenseman.

Manley is pretty small right now – 5’8” might be generous. However, a growth spurt seems likely: his older brother is 6’5”, 234 lb. Richard Manley, a former NTDP forward now a sophomore at SUNY-Geneseo.

Looks like he'll be a 2014 or 2015 recruit, could be a possible replacement for Koudys or Leonard.

Perhaps even later. I am going to wait until I see what year(s) Heisenberg uses until I add that to my file. I do like that he has a 6'5" brother (a forward BTW). I never realized that some NTDP players end up in D-III.

Maybe we should have grabbed his brother when we could? That is one big mother forward to put in front of the net on power plays.

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

I would think that he has a serious deficiency (speed?) if he left the USNTDP and then took several more eyars to end up in D-III http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=104237.

Especially at Geneseo which, unless he was dead set on being an engineer, might be an indication that the Oswegos, Plattsburghs, Middleburys, and Norwichs of the world weren't interested.

Then again, if his 15-year-old brother already wants to go to RPI, maybe being an engineer is a family thing.

Or maybe he just wanted to be relatively close to home. Reasonings abound.

According to Geneseo's website the only engineering programs appear to be of the 3-2 type, (including with Clarkson  ). Wanting to be an engineer would, however, explain the younger Manley's early interest in RPI. In any case, we could have a long time to discuss him here. :)

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

FWIW, heres some misc. info/stats from USHR on a couple already known and possible recruit targets.

F-Alex Rauter is Choates point leader so far with a line of 8-7-9-16-x and F-Anthony DiFruscia has a line of 9-5-2-7-x for Salisbury. USHR has stated that these two players already have offers out from RPI.

Albany Academy is now ranked 5th in the NE Prep polls, senior forward Tyler Hynes from Guilderland currently sits second in prep league scoring with a line of 10-14-11-25-x. I wonder if SA has been keeping an eye on him...

Also if RPI is still looking for another Dman next season, why not this kid? Represented Canada East in the WJAC the last two years while being enrolled in the engineering program at McMaster Univ. in Hamilton.

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

I've seen AA play 6 games so far & every game I'm more & more & MORE impressed with Tyler Hynes. With the exception of the Avon game he's easily been the best player on the ice. SA is aware of Hynes, obviously, but I have no idea where he stands. Haven't seen anyone from RPI, except of course "Col". Knowlton, at their home games (doesn't mean they weren't though) but have seen other school reps.

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

FWIW, Manley would be the youngest ECAC recruit when added to Heisenberg's list, beating out a Cornell recruit who is also a '96. There are already '97s elsewhere.

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

Manley was also selected to represent the New York District at the 2011 US National Development "15" camp in Rochester,NY this past summer. Quite possible where the coaches spotted him, so it wouldnt surprise me if RPI was after another player or two from this list.

He ended up with one assist in five games for Team Navy at the camp.

Thanks for finding that. I wonder why none of my searches brought that up earlier.

Because redhead18 is a straight up ninja, that's why.
:D

Just happened to stumble across this but looks like SA will be spending some time in Vegas this June as one of six NCAA coaches to coach a team at the Great Western Futures Super Camp. The camp is for elite hockey players born between 1993 and 1998.

Appert seems to be all over the place trying to find top talent to bring to RPI.
