Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

Season before the National Championship we played them at home i think scoring six in the third for a 7-1 win Marty Dallman with the game winner if I recall correctly. Also remember a Christmas / Holiday tourney when prov had all the presidents men playing for them Wllson Kennedy Nixon et al and those one piece pants

I also recall a Christmas Tournament when Providence beat us in 1 or 2 overtimes-probably in the early 90's. I think the final score was 5-4.

So now both this thread and the PtC thread are discussing old RPI tourney games. :D

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

It's still RPI hockey-and certainly better than some of the other stuff that has been appearing lately.

Oh, good - I'm free to reminisce. :)

I remember back in the 1970 RPI tourney, which was still played under the old round-robin format with no overtimes.

On the second night (Jan. 3), RPI played Providence. The score was tied, 1-1, in the final seconds, as the Friars applied pressure in the RPI zone. As the crowd screamed, the puck entered the net. But when everybody looked at the scoreboard clock, it said 0:00.

The referees, evidently not taking into account that the horn on the Field House scoreboard was so weak that you could scarcely hear it if two people were talking at once, ruled that, since they had not heard the horn, the puck must have gone in before time expired, so Providence was declared the winner of the game, 2-1, and went on to win the tournament.

At the tournament's conclusion, RPI goalie Terry (Nurd) Jordan was heard to mutter, "In this tournament, I played 180 minutes - and one second."

Four nights later, Jordan's frustration doubled when RPI played Princeton at the Field House. This time the Engineers led, 3-2, as the final seconds wound down with the Tigers applying pressure. Once again, the puck entered the net, the clock said zero, and the referees ruled the goal counted. Then Princeton won in overtime.

RPI never beat Princeton during my four years at the school.

I seem to remember a tie w/Providence in a mid/late 70's Christmas Tournament (was it 3-3). Bill Milner played his eyes out in that game against the Engineers. I remember Ron Wilson and, of course, the imposing Jim 'Pop' Korn who got more ink in the pros than in college. (Wonder how tall he was in skates?) LL was their coach... Salfi was ours. Don Boyd had an eye popping end-to-end rush in the third, beginning w/a loop around our net and he was off... did everything but score. ;)

And another in 88-89 where we again lost in OT to Providence in the XMas tournament 2-1. I can still remember the Friars going absolutely crazy celebrating all night long in the old Holiday Inn on 6th Street. I know there are lots of reasons why the Tournament is no more-but darn they were fun times and great games.

I certainly have no inside knowledge, but it wouldn't surpise me if it comes back in two years when western teams have more OOC games to use.

Having stated at the Holiday Inn/Best Western every time that I attended the tourney, it wasn't just once that there were celebrations there.

He should have never took us off the gold standard. I always wanted to make that point but never had the opportunity.

I blame FDR even more, he proposed the legislation that made it illegal for US citizens to own gold. Fortunately that law was reversed....

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

I know we are only at post # 590, still, an idea for the next thread title occurred to me, a bit prosaic perhaps and certainly accurate:

RPI 2011 - 12 Part III: We Like to Post....A Lot!

or RPI 2011 - 12 Part III: We Really Like to Post!

Already?! I know, look who's talking, the guy that would post this at 200. You've actually given me a great idea, though:

RPI 2011-12 Part III: What should the title for Part IV be?

:eek::p:D:D

BTW, italics doesn't work in thread titles.

I like this one...a lot...haha. Everyone have fun at this weekend's games...sounds like quite the crew! I will be out in the Tug Hill plateau for a bachelor/bachelorette party...trying to find electricity so that I can grab some score updates ;). I love tailgating...****!

Go Red!

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

With CC twice this weekend and the NC pair next weekend, we have four straight games against fellow D-III schools. I wonder if that has ever happened before. Perhaps we have played home and home with Union and the NC schools consecutiviely.

According to augenblick, that situation has happened as recently as the 2007-08 season, with the Union home and home on Jan. 18-19 and the NC road trip Jan 25-26. We lost 3 of 4.

2004-05. Black Friday was against CCT (obviously SLU the next night), and the next weekend was Union home/home (and football with Union that afternoon; we lost all 3 Union games.)

Yes indeedy it has.
Jan 18-26, 2008. @ Union, Union, @ Clarkson, @ St. Lawrence
Jan 12-20, 2007. Union, @ Union, Clarkson, St. Lawrence (BRF!)
Nov 5-13, 2004. Clarkson (Black Friday), St. Lawrence, Union, @ Union

Other notable times of the past ten seasons or so when we were "close":
4 of 7 and 6 of 11 to start last season (Oct 8-9 2 @ CC, Oct 15 @ NU, Oct 16 Bentley, Oct 22 RIT, Oct 23 Niagara, Oct 30 vs Union, Nov 5 @ Dartmouth, Nov 6 @ Harvard, Nov 12 @ Union, Nov 13 Union (Black Friday))
4 of 5 in 2008-9 (Jan 23 @ Clarkson, Jan 24 @ St. Lawrence, Jan 30 @ Dartmouth, Feb 6 Union, Feb 7 @ Union)
3 straight in 2002-3 (Jan 11 @ Clarkson, Jan 12 @ St. Lawrence, Jan 16 @ Union)

(Just to make sure I've got all of the possible teams, the only D-III teams are RPI, CC, Union, RIT, CCT, and SLU, right? No other teams that currently exist or have gone defunct in the past ten seasons, correct?)

Edit: Dam*. Ninja'ed twice!

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part II: We Like to Post!

This year, not only will we hit 6 out of 8, but we will cover every other D-III school in that time period! October 28th thru November 25th: CC/CC, CCT/SLU, (Yale and Brown the next weekend), Union the 15th, and RIT the 25th.
