RPI 2010 Offseason VI: The NHL's CBA Doesn't Appear to Have Been a Boon for the Tute.

With one day left in the month, I think that we can say that September was a much better month for RPI hockey than August. In August, we lost two players, each with three years of eligibility remaining, and a 2011 blue-chip recruit. In September, we got commitments from two potential star players and an indication that a recruit whom we had almost given up on should be in Troy next fall.

But everyone knew that already. :)

Dale Watson '69 passed away last week according to this note by Ken Schott http://tinyurl.com/2usw9ws. :( :( :(

Those of us who were around at the time recall how he along with Richard Scammell and the rest of the class of 1969 led the resurgence of RPI hockey after the depths of 1966, culminating in the defeat of Cornell and Ken Dryden on December 4, 1968.

I take this one especially hard-he was a gifted player and as you said RB he was part of the resurgence in RPI hockey fortunes after a dismal 65-66 season. RIP Dale.:(

Are you really that high on Neal? I mean, he seems like a good player and all, but I just thought that his stats/background seemed more in line with the Malchuk/O'Grady level rather than the D'Amigo/Pirri level. Of course, I say this totally hoping that I am missing the boat. Curious to hear your thoughts.

I think that it is safe to say that RPI hockey would not now be playing D-I hockey without him and his classmates. It's a measure of the depths that RPI had fallen to that Watson as a rookie was elected Captain in 66-67.

Actually, I think that he is indeed on an O'Grady level. There is however probably close to a balance between the three that we lost and the three that we gained because I think that we were also overrating Quinn.

Interesting. I think we have quite different definitions of "star players". :p While I would certainly not understate the desirability and, in fact, necessity of having "glue" guys like O'Grady and Neal, I won't be counting on them for our offensive firepower.

On the other hand, I am thrilled that are "B-level" recruits are now guys like O'Grady, Neal, Tinordi - guys who have shown scoring prowess while not making it their focus. In the past, it seems like our second-level recruits have had very one-dimensional styles (see, e.g., Colling). This is not to demean what they contributed to the team whatsoever, but I am thrilled by the idea that our 3rd-line types now will have had a good deal of scoring in their junior background rather than always having been grinders.

To respond to the other, bigger-picture, part of your statement, I don't think we have quite broken even (yet). Haggerty doesn't seem to have the same physical skills (read: size) as D'Amigo despite having a seemingly similar style of play. Pretty much the same thing could be said for Laliberte as well (when compared to Pirri). It does seem like Neal has a lot more upside that Quinn would have, whose stocked seemed to have absolutely plummeted in everybody's mind (his Ontario Juniors coach, NHL scouts, college scouts, Montgomery) since 18 months ago.

Do you remember the game between the frosh including Watson and Scammell and the varsity team from 65-66?

I have very fond memories of Dale, when I was in grammer school @ a local cathoilc school they used to hire athletes from RPI to be gym teachers Dale Watson and Colin Ingham were my Gym teachers and at one point they brought a bunch of old hockey sticks and a tennis ball and we played floor hockey that is when I fell in love w/the game.It was big stuff for a little kid I remember Dale was a big guy and he had no front teeth it was love at first site.Later that year they arranged thru the booster club for us to attend a Christmas Tounament game against Mcmaster University I will always remember the goalie for Mcmaster didn't wear a mask.That was my first RPI game and it also was love at first site.You gave something to this kid that he has enjoyed for 40+ years.May You Rest in Peace

It was a mismatch of grand proportions-the freshmen with Watson and Scammell destroyed the varsity team. For those who don't know this-back in those days freshmen were not elligible to play on the varsity and had their own team and their own schedule of games.

edit-I tried looking back as far as i could go here at the house-I can't find anything from the game but I seem to remember a final score of 8-1(but that is the best guess I can come up with)

Haggerty is currently listed at 5'11 184
D'Amigo was 5'11 190 in RPI's Media guide

Haggerty spent the summer working out under the guidance of Ben Prentiss with NHLers like St. Louis and Pacioretty... not unreasonable to think Haggerty's physical growth will follow JD'As...hopefully his game will too.
