Re: RPI 2010-2011 V: The "Chase" to AC & Beyond

Some die-hard fans either have no cell phones or cell phones with limited capabilities, thereby likely disallowing the possibility for examining updates via Twitter. ;)

I would think that word will quickly get around when a few people in a section check. :)

Lots of fans used to listen to WRPI while at the game to get the calls-I imagine they will be updating the out of town scores also.

I think that the only way to keep anyone from knowing the scores of other games is to start RPI's games at 4 PM. :)

I vote every day-hasn't seem to change things though. Our split vote seems to be hurting however.

I still think Lee is hurt. He is just not comfortable out there. Helfrich last year was a healthy scratch sometimes but we now know he had some nagging stuff. I think the first line this weekend should be Higgs, Polacek and Josh.

Possibly-the key Friday will be getting the puck out of our zone quickly with the first 2 passes. Princeton forechecks you to death sending in 3 men at times. The first period at Hobey Baker Rink they succesfully bottled us up and kept lots of pressure on Merriam who was just outstanding and had to make several spectacular saves. If we can find the way to deal with that forecheck we should be fine. Princeton did exactly the same thing to Yale this past weekend and had them really on their heels 3-0 early. This coming weekend is one Friday night we just cannot afford to come out flat in the first 20 minutes. I still feel the forward lines are not going to be the key, it is how our defense plays that will be crucial. Just an old fan's 2¢

As we saw at Hobey, too many times the defense hesitated before trying to clear the puck out of our zone. This led to many turnovers and those saves that you mentioned.
We need to be decisive with the puck and get it out.
Princeton did not appear to be to talented defensively, so we can and did score on them. So the defense will be key Friday night.
LETS GO RED!!!!!!!!!!!!

That first period at baker rink symbolized what we do wrong at times-our defense was tentative about clearing the puck out and Princeton jumped on it. We are a very good team when we play aggresive defense-when we clear the puck out of the zone fast and with intent. When we try to make this soft touch passes in our own zone trying to carry the puck out-a good forechecking team like Princeton, is all over us. i agree 100%-defense will be the key.

Actually posted this to end the last thread but was interested on what you think about Bailen as the MVP of this team.

Haven't posted in a while so to close this thread I will give a few thoughts. First is overall very happy with direction of this team. The losses of Pirri & D'amigo are well documented but can't be overlooked on what a major hurdle this coaching staff has had to overcome. As far as coaching I think Appert has grown and become known as a coach who can grab some major recruits. On recruiting his grade would be an A. As far as a bench coach I would lean more towards a B-. Experience will raise this. Only major disappointment is the teams lack of shooting the puck. You look at the 3 OT losses at home and the OT win at Colgate and I believe RPI was outshot 17-0 in the overtimes except for the penalty shot victory. The puck needs to be sent to the net in hopes for any type of deflection or rebound in a short 5 minute overtime. A point or two in the 3 overtime home losses would be extremely valuable going into this weekend.

The games this weekend are probably as important of a home weekend as RPI as had in the last 7 or 8 years. A lot is on the line from an ECAC bye, to the Pairwise. Hope the crowd senses this and there is a decent showing on Friday night. Bergin returning should be a big help. That and an effort similar to the Cornell games should lead them to four points.

Lastly I know Polacek has had a very good year but is there anyone else out there besides myself that belives Bailen & York are main reasons RPI is in this position. I think York ihas been outstanding this season and Bailen has been the best of the 18 skaters on the ice this season.

All good thoughts JK. I agree tht Bailen has been extraordinary. But for MVP I kind of lean towards a senior who has provided the leadership on the ice. When Chase has a good night-we have a good night. When Chase is held off the board, we have a much tougher time. I hate to think what this team's record would be this year without Polacek. For that matter that same last statemnet could be made about Bailen. I just tend to lean a little in the direction of Chase for MVP. In this close choice-perhaps what happens this weekend will make the choice for us.

We've been having difficulties shooting the puck since I started following RPI hockey. Are the defenders just good at blocking shots? Are we waiting for the perfect setup to ensure the puck gets to the net? Are we just constantly putting it wide and not getting anything "on net"? Answering these questions should alleviate our concerns.

I'm not smart enough to say definitively why the disparity is so high. In recent years, I think part of the reason was not having more than maybe one blueliner who could hit the net with a slapper without sending it a mile wide or lodging it deep into someone's shinbone...not to mention the mobility or lack thereof of a few of them...sorry, can't sugar coat it....

With Bailen, Bergin, Dolan et. al., we're seeing Seth execute his plan to have weapons on the blueline contribute on the scoresheet. Playing an up-tempo style where d-men are encouraged to join the offense, but inevitably leads to occasional odd man breaks. Having a stud like York between the pipes helps immensely with this.

Or maybe our forwards just such in the defensive end....:D

If I read it right, in 09-10 league play we were -71 in shots and + 6 in goals. This year to date in the ECAC we're -108 and + 16 in goals.
