Perhaps their most interesting goalie prospect is their sixth round pick from 2007, Allen York. He has shown continued improvement during his tenure at R.P.I, and his start to the 2010-11 season is encouraging to say the least; though only posting a record of 1-1-2, York has only given up six goals in four games, giving him a goals against of 1.45 and a save percentage of .947.

I wonder if he continues to play this well all season, what the chances are of him coming back for his senior year.

After last year, I shudder to think about it, and I remember the quote that was in WS's signature awhile back about the entire Class of '13 returning.

I don't think that this interview with York has been posted here http://www.timesunion.com/default/article/A-conversation-with-RPI-goaltender-Allen-York-710078.php. IMHO, he was asked some of the dumbest questions.
Oh, definitely. I haven't given any thought to leaving here early. I take it year by year. It is obviously the goal of every kid who plays hockey.

I don't see York leaving early, unless he posts an insane number of shutouts this year.

As in most cases the question will come down to money. And who could blame him-if the offer is substantial enough. Why risk an injury that could end or diminish your career simply by playing one extra year of college hockey? This is a different case from the freshmen who left-that was after only one year and they could have used another year or two at RPI to develop further. York will have been here 3 years and gotten the bulk of his improvement from being here behind him. Bolting early with only 1 year left would make a lot more sense than leaving with 3 years left. We have had other player leave after 3 years before and some had great sucess (Oate for example) others who at least reached their goal of playing in the NHL and then staying in profesional hockey for several years at a fairly high level (Tapper). Even a goalie who left early and did very well for himself(Puppa).

I think he could go the rest of season with no shutouts and potentially still leave. The big question for him will be - why come back? If he has a good year (measured in save % and GAA), and next year doesn't look like a potential deep NCAA run then the CBJ could easily entice him with a good offer.

This may sound counterintuitive, but one big key to York coming back is going to be how well the underclass forwards develop this year. If the offensive outlook for next year is nothing but a couple of hotshot Freshman recruits then that might not be enough to keep him here should the offer come his way. O'Grady, AAG and Higgs are the key IMO.

Changing the subject:
I watched some of a TV rebroadcast of the RIT-Lowell game played last week at the AHL building in downtown Rochester. The crowd was announced at over 10,000 and they were raucus all night.

ECAC fans could take a cue from the RIT supporters. Those who saw them at the NCAA regionals in Albany last year will probably agree. They have a band equal to most in the ECAC and their student cheering section is superior to most in the east, with the exception of Cornell, UVM and UNH. They are mostly dressed in orange, are loud and supportive. Their cheers and shouts go beyond the standard, "you suck;" "he sucks;" the "refs suck," etc. It should be interesting to see how well they travel this weekend for an early season non-leaguer.

I am not sure that the prospects of the team will have a lot to do with any players decision. If the money is there, than a player may chose not to risk injury and take what he can get.
York will have three years invested in RPI. That is three years towards a degree that will serve him well no matter what life throws at him.
I thought that Joel Laing was a great goalie who had a ton of shut outs and never got a sniff at the NHL. Neil Little was a legendary AHL goalie, but no real NHL career. Goalies have it tough. There are only 60 NHL jobs available. A goal tender has to think long and hard about his future when giving up one year of college. If his goal is professional hockey, no matter what league he plays in, than maybe he thinks about leaving. But if he is set on an NHL career, he should stay until he gets his degree. JMO

Hey guys...not sure if anyone else noticed or not, but I was at the Bentley game last Saturday and saw a family of 3 or 4 with North Dakota Fighting Sioux jerseys on. Are we targeting a UND transfer? Just thought it odd considering it was RPI/Bentley...

Moorhead isn't too far away from the North Dakota border. I wouldn't be surprised if Jeff Foss's family were also UND fans. EDIT: I realize that UND is in Grand Forks and Moorhead is next door to Fargo, but of the current RPI players, he's the only one close. I don't know if any of the recruits are from that area.

Whether or not Foss's family were UND supporters, it would surprise me if they would wear UND jerseys at the HFH. I also wouldn't expect a possible transfer to be wearing his current team's jersey. Most likely they are UND fans now living in the area. Perhaps somone is a grad student at RPI.

That's also a possibility. I know I've seen different team sweaters at HFH before, as well as at other locations (like the UND sweater we saw at the GLI last year).

While it doesn't concern RPI, but just to give a little insight on us crazy Sioux fans, I wear a Sioux jersey to any hockey game I go to.

Re: RPI 2010-11: Houston, We've had a Facelift!

Maybe they were just visiting the site of UND's first NCAA championship, which was in the HFH (then the RPI FH) in 1959. :D

Someone mentioned on the RPI_Sports list that the Canadian anthem wasn't played at the Bentley game. Does anyone know why?

I agree. I don't see his having three years education under his belt being a huge determiner one way or the other. Polishing off two semesters work towards his degree could be done over the course of a few summers. That said, some kids like to finish what they start and love the college atmosphere. Allen strikes me as a pretty mature kid...he'll do what's best for him.

I personally don't think there is any rush for a goaltender to make the jump. IIRC, if he stays all 4 he'd leave for CBS's camp as a 23 yr. old. He is developing nicely in Troy and if I'm Columbus I tell him to "keep doing what your doing Allen", have him back again for prospect's camp this coming summer and see what happens.

It was not played and many of us were not happy. I have no idea why. They had a girl sing the national anthem from the scorers table. Even if the girl didn't know the song, why the band didn't/couldn't play the Canadien anthem is a mystery. I expect the HFH staff to get their #### together and play it this weekend.

Definitely odd. Though I doubt a transfer kid would want his family telegraph to the world that he was in the building. Also, it was homecoming weekend so it could have been the family of a current student or that of an alum.

I agree. As long as a significant number of players are Canadian, it should be played at every home game.

I do have a hunch, but won't put it out here to protect the innocent. However, at the Yale game last year, although colors were presented, both anthems were still performed. At the Army game, however, the Canadian anthem was not performed.
