RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

The interfence penalties that were cited is driving me nuts, both in the NCAA and NHL.
It seems that you can hit the attacking player, but you must immediately separate. If you hold him up at all you will be called. Also, there seems to be a timing element.
If you hit him immediately after he shoots the puck in, it is ok, but if the referee deems the hit to be past the continuation of the play, he will call interference. This seems to leave a lot of interpretation in the officials hands.
I don't like the way it has been called at all.

I just hope we dont continue to have the reputation as a team that takes too many penalties-if we do, you can be sure the refs talk about it before every game and watch for it. I didnt think we were overaggressive at all against Army and in fact sat back and let them push us around at times. Both Army goals should have been prevented by quick decisive defensive action in front of the net. But all of that should have been moot-we just cant expect to win against anyone when we put 1 out of 40 shots in the net.:(

Let's look at it as we will win if we continue to put 40 shots on net. :)

Don't get so glum, some of the saves Army's goaltender had to make to keep it that way were out of this world.

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

I was at the Army game Saturday night and, frankly, found the student side to be very disappointing. I only get to HFH about once every other year so I hope it can be partially attributed to a non-league game on Halloween night, but the cheers showed so-so energy and absolutely zero creativity. My nephew, a West Point cadet, wondered whether they knew any other words besides $uck$. It appeared that the answer was no.

A few other items:

1) Twice the Engineers were called for interference after an Army forward tipped a puck past a defenseman and tried to go around him. Traditionally in those circumstances the defenseman was allowed to finish a check and stand the guy up. Is that a new point of emphasis for the refs this season? Then again, the opposite situation occurred in the closing minutes and it was uncalled.

2) Merriam looked OK, but on one of the goals (I think it was the game winner) he was much too casual in directing away a centering attempt and ended up feeding it right to an Army forward coming down the opposite side.

3) When did they take out the seats down by the stage? Those sections now look like concrete bleachers. Are they not going to sell them for any games - even the BRFO? I've always hoped they'd put in corner sections similar to those from the 1980s renovation at the other end. Are there plans to rework the seating at the east end?

4) The Let's Go Red garden that replaced Section 1 (which is still there just in a closed position) looks ridiculous. If they didn't have the time or money to put in the new structure planned at that end I wish they'd just left it as it was. What are the current plans for that area?
In the ECAV master plan, one of the phases calls for substantial renovations to HFH. Last season they had architectural drawings on display on easels as you entered the rink. I am sure that you can find these renderings somewhere on the athletics website.

Renovations would include an entirely new facade for the front entrance to HFH, with a new lobby and entry into the rink. IIRC, the area that is now the "corral" (for lack of a better term) would be converted into elevated club rooms - one for the booster clubs, and others that could be rented out to groups, corporate types, etc. I believe a press box and new public bath rooms were in the plan as well.

That said, given the economy and its impact on fundraising, its anyone's guess when this phase might actually commence.
That is unless Shirley can snag some Federal Stimulus moneys....

Exactly ! This is what I was trying to say in my last post about the game. We scored 1, and should have been much much more. If we buried 5, then a 3rd period let down and crappy calls by the refs is moot. We win.

I absolutely agree that we got pushed around all 3rd period and that both Army goals should / could have been prevented. We let them hang in the game and it cost us. We had more than enough opportunity in the 1st period to seal this game. Yes, their 'tender stood on his head, but if we ended that period with 3 its a much much different game.

The point for me is that we had a boat load of scoring chances. I dont think we have seen offense for years and we are within inches of putting up some big numbers. We start doing that, and everything else solves itself. Finally, with the scoring opportunities we are getting now, can you imagine when JL steps on the ice with us ? It will be sick. I cant wait until the next game, the rest of the season, and next year.

And JL appears to be a goal scorer, while although Pirri and D'Amigo can both score, the former appears better as a play maker and the latter as a hustle-type player (the one to get the puck from the other team). JD'A also seems to be better in the defensive end than either of the others.

BTW, I don't think that it has been pointed out enough how much better our faceoff stats have been this year compared to last several seasons.

Absolutely-faceof numbers are up dramatically and although it is often overlooked-it is one of th eplaces we have been failing for years. Good assessment of Pirri and D'Amigo as compared to Laliberte. If and when JL gets here, this is going to be a far better scoring machine for teams to have to deal with. It is much easier for teams when they have to concentrate on 1 or 2 players-when that number starts to get up past that, well it takes truly deep defensive teams to be able to hold 3 guys off the scoresheet. I see this year as the growing period-next year as a big step up and then after that-well, it will all depend on the next couple years of recruiting. (But this all does look promising for the first time in a long while):)

Sorry if this is off topic but wow. I guess there's plenty of room for SA upward salary mobility. ;)

Apparently her swollen salary isn't quite enough. The 'tute will be hosting their very own ego-swelling "Shirleypalooza" celebrating her ten years at RPI. Musical guests to include Aretha Franklin and Joshua Bell....really:

Any chance we can get the Queen of Soul to sing the national anthem at HFH? :D

But really, I have to say this seems a bit over the top, especially given the economy and the fact that the school fired 100 employees not so long ago. Tacky IMO.

I absolutely agree Ralph - JL's numbers are so scary that I laugh everytime I see them because they are frightening and so over the top. I also completely agree on the analysis of Pirri and D'Amigo. Pirri is a sniper and is going to score alot. I go back to the warm ups for the Sacred Heart game and York was stopping everything and my son and I literally stood at the glass laughing because he netted at least 8 in a row. D'Amigo seems to just love to mix it up. During the Army game, he took it to the corner fended off 1 defender, got knocked down, kept control of the puck, got up, took on another guy and just kept rolling...and maintained control of the puck the entire time. I looked at my son and said that that is just sheer will and desire. I love that. It was interesting also that when the starting lines were announced, that Jerry got as much or more of a cheer than Pirri did. We are there and so so close on offense right now. We start popping a few in during early games this season and things will turn and be quite alright.

Amen RB. If we can keep this up all season, my blood pressure will drop ten points. :p

The will and desire is the reason that I expect we will lose D'Amigo for the GLI, as he is apparently not the prima donna that many of his former teammates from the USNTDP are, and thus he will be selected to play in the World Junior tourney.

Agree completely...the guy is a leader on the ice. I'll be shocked if he isn't on the WJ team.

Understood and I expect that as well. While not good for the team during the tourney, its fantastic for D'Amigo and great for the program to have a participant. The young man has earned it and deserves it.

I am a fan of CJ Lee too, who hasnt gotten much chatter on these boards (at least not like Pirri and D'Amigo). I was impressed by Smith at times last game as well.
