RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

I'd rather see the "It's all your fault" after the count-off and sieve-ing of the goaltender go away. Ripping off items from Pyongyang, New York isn't my idea of fun.

I'd like to be able to stand during the games, but I guess that's just me.

And, I like the sieve-ing of the opposing goalie for the goals, and the Clarkson Still Sucks cheers. But, again, just my opinion.

That's been a public safety FAIL for years.

We're not having a problem with the sieving, just the "it's all your fault" added on for EVERY SINGLE GOAL. It's retarded when Cornell does it, it's even more retarded when we do it.

Agreed. Pretty much everything they do is...

There ARE times when it's appropriate. Like after a You Can't Count penalty (though it usually becomes You Can't Count), or when a player we really hate is the reason for the goal.

Hats off to your second thread, Tech fan base has fallen from what it once was.

They are far more rare than it is utilized these days.

I don't know. The newspaper shaking during introductions is pretty ingenious. I'd say it beats our "...sucks" chant pretty handily. The only other arenas I've been to are Agganis and Cheel. BU's introduction taunting was alright and Clarkson's student section was nice and loud, but the unity shown by the Cornell fans, even at RPI last January was impressive. I can't even imagine being at Lynah while the students are in session and seeing how intense the fans can get.

And you the fan are dressed with the same attitude of years late.

Clearly some people can't take a joke. Don't group me in with the fair-weather fans who leave halfway through the 3rd period when the opposing team pulls ahead. My group is composed of those who call them out as they leave.

I have great amounts of faith in this year's team. I've always been an optimist with RPI hockey (yes, including last year), but this year just seems that it can be not good, but great.

The only other places I've seen with people that programmed are North Korea when Kim Jong Il wants a parade or Cold War-era Moscow when they wanted to show off all their new fun weapons.

True, it seems pre-programmed. But, unity is important. And, it's not like the fans aren't knowledgeable. I'd love to have fans that are knowledgeable. (Well, those on this board are quite knowledgeable, I just wish everyone at the games (myself included) had a little more intelligence and could provide a little more insight into how the hockey world turns.)

It's old and boring. Who reads newspapers anymore?

Unity is important but at some point it just becomes uber-creepy.

And for the record, we have some of the most knowledgeable fans in the nation. Were you at the PEI game? The student section knew who which freshmen to be looking at.

Outside of the military/communist example pointed out by GLM, at what point does it become creepy? Personally I can think of few things more awesome than large crowds of fans shouting the same obnoxious insult, particularly when it's witty or at least mildly amusing. Everyone hated the "Crosby sucks" chants in Philly but I thought it was hilarious.

Oh, and this. I'd always hoped we could get it going at BU with the two student sections over each endzone, but the chemistry between the sides is still a little underdeveloped.

Agreed-we have always had a very knowledgable fan base. It does get to Cornellish when we become robotic in our chants. There used to be a lot of creativity in the HFH-back in the 80's we even had fans bringing all sorts of banners to wave. I do think that the fans will respond as this team shows thejm that we indeed are a force to be reckoned with in the ECAC. I would love for this to start this coming weekend with our first 2 ECAC games. Go Red!

The student side is much louder this year and better organized than it has been in the past, the only things that help that out are wins and exciting play and this year, save for half the game against Army, there's been plenty of that.

Not to mention the disbanding of the Red Army. :P

I dont know how to do it but I sure would like to see the attendance on both sides of the HFH increase back to the days of the 80's and 90's. The HFH can be an intimidating place for a team to come into when almost full of RPI faithful. I am sure the last 3 years of losses have contributed as has the economy-it is no longer a cheap weekend date out to come and root on the cherry and white. Add to that many who stay home as they can listen or view the games on TV and internet and yo have some valid reasons for faltering attendance. The team does seem exciting this year-and it will only get beter. A few more wins and let's see what it does for the crowd.

I was at the Army game Saturday night and, frankly, found the student side to be very disappointing. I only get to HFH about once every other year so I hope it can be partially attributed to a non-league game on Halloween night, but the cheers showed so-so energy and absolutely zero creativity. My nephew, a West Point cadet, wondered whether they knew any other words besides $uck$. It appeared that the answer was no.

A few other items:

1) Twice the Engineers were called for interference after an Army forward tipped a puck past a defenseman and tried to go around him. Traditionally in those circumstances the defenseman was allowed to finish a check and stand the guy up. Is that a new point of emphasis for the refs this season? Then again, the opposite situation occurred in the closing minutes and it was uncalled.

2) Merriam looked OK, but on one of the goals (I think it was the game winner) he was much too casual in directing away a centering attempt and ended up feeding it right to an Army forward coming down the opposite side.

3) When did they take out the seats down by the stage? Those sections now look like concrete bleachers. Are they not going to sell them for any games - even the BRFO? I've always hoped they'd put in corner sections similar to those from the 1980s renovation at the other end. Are there plans to rework the seating at the east end?

4) The Let's Go Red garden that replaced Section 1 (which is still there just in a closed position) looks ridiculous. If they didn't have the time or money to put in the new structure planned at that end I wish they'd just left it as it was. What are the current plans for that area?

The noise all depends on what side you're sitting on, although RPI fans didn't have a whole lot to cheer for the last half of the game. If you're sitting on the "old fart" side of the house (south side) the game will sound a bit quieter. The "sucks" chants have been pretty well established at RPI for a while.

1) The interference calls drove me nuts because it appeared the officials were OK with Army doing what you said but not when John Kennedy for RPI did it. Very inconsistent there and it's certainly not a point of emphasis. RPI did seem more intent on holding up Army's forwards however, that kind of play wasn't something I was really noticing from RPI in other games.

2) I'm still getting used to seeing Merriam play a bit and his style makes me anxious as a fan because he's very eager to play pucks, although once play is better established in the zone he relies heavily on his defensemen to do their job and clear away loose rebounds or men in front, neither of which happened on Army's game-winner as Burgdoerfer let the forward both get in behind him and then did nothing to move him out of there when he went after the loose puck. Burgdoerfer seemed to recognize that he messed up as he talked to Merriam for a bit after that.
